  • (21 Jul 2008) HEADLINE: Radio host angers parents of autistic children
    ---------------------------------------
CAPTION: Right-wing radio talk show host Michael Savage, who described 99 percent of children with autism as brats, said Monday he was trying to "boldly awaken" parents to his view that many people are being wrongly diagnosed. (July 21)
    ----------------------------------------
    [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]
NB. THIS IS A VOICEOVER TRANSCRIPT, NOT A FULL SHOT LIST.
    [Notes:Dateline: New York]
    [Notes:NATS up "Fire Michael Savage!"]
    [Notes:Vid NYC protests, pics Savage]
Conservative radio host Michael Savage is once again fueling outrage.
[Notes:SOT: "You know what autism is? I tell you what autism is. In 99% of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out."]
    [Notes:Pics savage]
That's what his more than eight million listeners heard last week.
He's calling it .... 'the illness du jour'
[Notes:"This is hateful speech, and we don't allow hateful speech in this country.]
But Savage says his comments have been taken out of context.
[Notes:Savage sot: My comments about autism were meant to boldly awaken parents and children to the medical communities attempt to label too many parents and children or adults as autistic."]
But some advocates for autistic children are outraged.
[Notes:John Gilmore, Autism United: "As the father of an 8-year-old son with autism he can't speak, and I assure you that you can call him any name you could possibly think of for days and I don't think that would make him speak any faster."]
[Notes:Vid NYC protests, logo Talk Radio Network]
And they're urging Talk Radio Network ... which syndicates the show nationwide ...To fire Savage.
[Notes:Evelyn Ain, 8-year-old-son has autism: "We don't want people walking around thinking that autism is a small brat runing around not listening to the parents because it's so far from it."]
    [Notes:Pics of Savage]
Savage says that's not what he meant ...
He says he wanted to alert parents to his view that many people are being wrongly diagnosed.
[Notes:Savage: "There are other conditions that mimick autism such as having a very high IQ or simply being late in talking , and yet these characteristics are the characteristics of these situations put that child on the checklists for autism which will often invite a false diagnosis."]
    [Notes:File vid children]
The government says the increase in autism is mostly caused by a surge in special education services ..
and a corresponding shift in diagnoses.
They estimate about one in a hundred-fifty children have some form of the disorder.

"Hate speech", along with all other kinds of speech, is protected by the freedom of speech mentioned in the First Amendment. It is speech that offends some people that especially needs protection under freedom of speech. It wouldn't be needed if all speech were milktoast and rosy.

Interesting that when you search "Savage Nation" this is the top result, even though he does a daily radio show and podcast. Yeah, no youtube bias against conservatives at all. Also interesting that someone would dig through a 25 year career looking for dirt and this is what they choose to defame him with. Pathetic.

This is not a free speech argument. This is a hate speech argument. Michael Savage is NOT a qualified doctor for neurological disorders who CANNOT diagnose autism and should leave the diagnosing to the professionals. He shouldkeep his opinions to himself because they spark hate against the autistic community. This is not a right or left argument. It’s a right or wrong argument. And he is wrong and everyone should know it.

If they throw a tantrum because they can't get candy at the store, AUTISM. The only real autism is when the kid can't speak, drools all day, hits himself or the wall and shits his adult diaper. Their eyes are also further apart from their noses than most people, so it's most likely genetic or a result of brain damage from the womb. No wonder you have all these adult manchildren who watch Barney and Thomas the Tank Engine all fucking day, their parents don't know how to discipline them. These people who say, "we do not need a cure," don't actually have autism or assburgers for that matter. They're just SJWs who want extra attention.

At the time I used to watch the O'Reilly Factor and loved his show and didn't like hearing some guy with his New Yorker accent chewing him out. Then all that stuff came out about Bill and I was like WOW! I started to wonder who the guy was that was chewing him out. Next weekend I heard his show again and was hooked since. The best part of the savage nation is it's like you're sitting by the fire with an old wise guy and he likes to trash but tells good stories too. Conversations not meant to be 100% percent politically correct at all times or you're convicted for life for being Adolf Hitler. If I had a talk show for that long I would probably have a long wiki page of all the things I had said. I think he has two masters degrees and a phd so he has some brains compared to some of the others in his field. Let me tell you something, that remark in the video that we don't allow hate speech? That's exactly why there is a First Amendment protecting speech of all kinds. Yes, there are some modest limits, but hate speech is not one of them. And you do not get to determine who does and doesn't have a platform, based on whether or not they agree with your views on any given issue people on the opposite side of the political aisle from me say some extremely offensive and dishonest things. I have no interest in the platforming them or trying to ruin their lives or careers. Quite the opposite, I want them to be heard, so that I have a golden opportunity to Mock and ridicule those things, and disprove them in the court of public opinion. It's called discourse, people. And I hate to say it, but Savage is mostly correct. Yes, autism is very real for a lot of kids. But even professionals will tell you it is over diagnosed, to the point that many professionals Within adhd. No, not every case of autism or ADHD is fake or diagnosed as something it isn't. But many cases are. That is the main point Savage was trying to make. And seriously, if you have nothing better to do than to organize a protest around some offhanded comment that a talk show host says on his program, you need to freaking get a life! also only 0.6% of people with autism are wrongly diagnosed. There are many parts of Autism where you are completely uneducated. Behaviour is a small thing that leads to the diagnosis, the smallest thing that contributes, only 18% of the diagnosis is based on behaviour. There are other symptoms that are looked into, so educate before commenting!
