MODS I'VE MADE TO MY WELDING RIG SINCE PIPELINE (UPDATED WELDING RIG TOUR!)
Vložit
- čas přidán 5. 09. 2024
- Let’s talk about modifications I’ve made to my welding rig in the last year. Since coming off the pipeline and transitioning from pipeline welding to a local welding business offering services to a wide range of customers a lot of my rig needs have changed. I need more tools on a daily basis as a mobile rig welder than I did as a pipeline welder. I’ve added a few visible things like the gin pole, chop saw, vice, and material rack and a few things that you can’t see.
In this video, I’m doing a walk around tour of my welding rig as it is today on-site. No clean up or prep before the video so you can see how it functions and what it is like on an everyday basis. It’s not the way I would have done it if the welding bed was built from scratch but I do like that I’m able to modify as needed to fit my needs today.

Now this is a real welders bed that’s actually used. Those tricked out custom ones aren’t, they have another truck that follows them to the job to deliver all the rest of the equipment they really need.
Alot of those pretty rigs I've seen are bassically just for guys who only weld and don't fit.
There's prima donna and then there's pragmatic 👍
Beds differ, often drastically, by use. Pure pipeline welding is not service truck work is not mixed work. Austin made his bed RECONFIGURABLE to any use he has for it which beats maintaining more than one truck.
I heard it said once, there's nothing more permanent than a temporary arrangement. Ha,ha
We'll leave this here for now......**8 years later**.....Ok, lets move this.
😂😂 ain’t that the truth
It's only temporary, unless it works...b
it's good of Austin to share what he has learned.
It was a pretty gloomy day yesterday, finding out my mom might have cancer an then getting home an getting a package from A.Ross welding put a big smile on my face an the extra stickers an coaster was a hit an for that I thank you sir..
Wishing the best for you and your mother 🇺🇸
@@Ruben901 Thank you sir..
Praying for you, your mother and family..
Love that truck set-up Austin - very practical. With the amount of rain we get here, almost every welder goes for an enclosed van - tools don't do good uncovered in our climate - but that truck set up is super cool IMO.
Enjoyed the rig tour, it reminded me that you may have the "swiss army knife" of work vehicles.
You definitely have helped me I’ve learned a lot from you and are still learning till this day I appreciate you helping the younger generation like myself
Its set ups like these that makes you more versatile and more dependable. I have a air compressor and paint gun with a small sandblaster along with my welding rig, gets me more work and i can charge the customer a bit more for a paint job on their fences or rails. Beats calling another guy to outsource the work and pay.
That is absolutely right
Certainly some great ideas, my truck is maxed out on weight. I have a welder, air compressor, oxy/acetylene set up, plasma cutter and many hand & air tools. I only carry my picker when I am going to need it. I mostly do mechanical work, but when people see a welder they always find stuff to be welded. I have rigged up several things that I can add or subtract as needed. I will be copying the set up you have for the saw. Thanks!
Flexibility and adaptation are great assets.
They'll keep you going through the lean times and fatten the kitty in good times.
Thanks

Get yourself a service bed and a used service truck crane imt or tiger or the like it will change your life and you won't have to move your truck to move stuff around and won't be down too long as you will just have to swap beds.
Only issue is can't pull a fifth wheel with a service bed (usually)
I’m 19 and just getting a rig set up and I love watching your visions it is very informative and I love all your ideas and i really want to go into the fabrication side of things and your videos help a lot and are really informative thanks.
@Deryk Lilley hey buddy, I’m 19 and I run a rig and have plenty of work. I’ve got plenty of experience for what I do
@@dylanmartinez6810 i don’t understand why people try and be little everyone 🤣
Thanks for all the helpful info and some motivational advice. I was doing wat you are doing, building gates, fences and livestock equipment for equipment here In my hometown. I hve developed some clientele but I haven't been welding for almost a month now due to the fact that my wife has been diagnosed with cancer and it really Hit me mentally and took the wind out of my sails. So watching your video and the words you use an how you use them it very inspiring to me to get me back under that pancake hood amd start welding again.
We are very sorry to hear about your wife. You and her are in our prayers. Thank you for sharing and for watching the videos. We are glad they are inspiring and motivating.
A really slick move could be to make your next bed detachable (heavy bolts, heavy pins, even vertical sockets with pins or bolts so the fasteners never take the bed weight) and have fork lift pockets so you can pick it up. That also wins when you need to replace a fuel pump if you didn't make the bed with an access door over the pump or want that space for something else.
Austin thank you for imparting good information. You are raising your fellow man, ( and ladies.)
Love the new add-ons. Not only do you have me saying "That-a-way" this week repairing/ welding pontoon boats I'm now saying "COFFEEEEEE" in the mornings. Keep up the videos! 👍
I like the mods you’ve done. Nice thing is that it won’t be hard to take it all off when you go back to the pipe line. Storage and function is the key to doing mobile welding. I keep my rig loaded down with a little bit of everything. Never know what you might need when you bounce around to multiple jobs every day. Keep up the good work and be safe!
That’s for sure.
@@arosswelding great video austin. Do you have a video on how to build a jib crane or gin pole?
Awesome going back to the pipeline👍 if you ever decide to build a new back bed. Please show us every step of how you build it. I’m in the process of making my own business for welding and seeing your videos are very helpful and full of ideas
Thank you, God bless you
glad to see you're still in the union.... ebb and flow is a perfect metaphor for the trade, some years are winners some are losers.
Nice set up brother. But here in Canada everything you do, you have to think about winter. The jack stands you have for example, in the winter it won’t come out until you sledge hammer all the ice off of it. Then you have to worry about the MTO. They pull you over give you a warning first time then next time $1000 ticket.
love this, i am new to structural welding from a long time of heavy/agricultural equipment.
joined the union as per the companies request and have had a fair amount of down time.
ive built a skid unit for my truck. made two 42x24" toolboxes and its almost fully assembled for side work. currently running a Lincoln ranger. i aspire to have your level of versatility and production!
How do you like union work
@@alphadog6114 honestly it's a little slower paced than what I'm used to but the difference in the quality of work and insuring safety is definitely MUCH more of a priority to them. my union dues are minimal and so is the down time / stand by time.
Got a tip on picking a truck? Do mainly repair and maintenance work on docks and equipment. And I’m starting the journey of building a truck to get away from the trailer set up I currently have. Ideally would want something similar to IC weld but not quite that extravagant. Don’t have all the tooling he does. So I don’t need that big of a bed. Would like a crane or gin pole.
Hey Austin, good to see you have changing your work focus to survive the current work dynamic. I've also been doing my best to make ends meet since the economy has changed. I'm not a pipeline welder, but I am in a parallel industry. All the best, dude. Take care.
I really like your welding bed. I wish I could make one just like it. I just pray I can stay steady working off my truck for now.
This is a solid truck love the bed minus the mods, I mean the mods made sense to me , but maaaan I would love to get my hands on that bed
Man your a go getter,u got all ends of your options very well thought out!keep on,keeping on brother!
Im glad to see you were able to adapt, and use your skill set to continue making a living.👍
I had my portable welding business from 2007 to 2013. It seemed like my truck was getting cut apart and rebuild every 3 weeks when I got a break between jobs. I thought it was a blessing when I sold my portable equipment in 2013 but part of me wants to jump right back into it. I currently buy and sell crude oil and the money is good but it feels too much like a job anymore. Miss my old days of every days different
Im very motivated with your videos, experience and engineering mindset. Your awsome! From Puerto Rico! If you wanna vacations! Here i am to help you
Idk if you’ve seen him but look up Hotshot specialty welding (I think that’s it) in the gram. The evolution of his work/trucks shows.
Love your videos of your current and more recent work life but looking forward to the pipeline videos we once saw. If it weren't for your more recent videos I probably wouldn't have done one of my current projects. Since its been so long off the pipeline you might have to review your pipeline jargon videos.
If you add a fuel pump access hatch above the fuel tank it makes the eventual fuel pump replacement (and troubleshooting) MUCH easier. If that's not convenient right now keep it in mind if you ever have to pull a fuel pump.
I love Wilton vises because they are built to last. I have one from 1958 that I use and a Morgan/Chicago 4-1/2" that's just as old.
Looks awesome. A word of advice, you may want to secure your chop saw with a ratchet strap when it's in transit. I'm not sure if you fall under commercial DOT but they could grab you for an insecure load as most governing bodies don't recognize bungees as cargo securement. No idea what the laws are in your neck of the woods but as a truck driver I use ratchets for everything to save myself a possible headache. Thanks so much for what you do, you helped me realize it was time to ditch the truck and follow my dream of being a welder and fabricator. I finish school next month.
Myself, i made a gin pole off my gooseneck hitch. So far i’v lifted 3000lb. I did have to block the axles though. For quick and dirty i’m going to fix one off the reciever as well.
It all....means things are going great for you then.... keep it going... really takes a set to go on your own...
You almost need another truck one with a
12 foot bed for the extra stuff and fitted more for that line of work , and keep that truck you’re using currently, rigged out for pipeline on stand by cleaned and serviced up ready
You definitley know way more than I do, maybe it didn’t fit in the schedule or whatever, but a coat of paint in those racks would go a long way
Dude it just seems like you have grown so much more
Since pipeline
Bro that ain't jainky where I come from that's classy
I love seeing this stuff. Once you make a new bed I’ll be excited to see the process. If you need someone to analyze that gin pole let me know and i can knock it out for you.
Have you thought about getting a simple pulley (system) for your winch? If your winch carries enough rope this would easily double your lifting capacity.
Keep up the good work, thanks for your videos. Greetings from Germany where your whole rig wouldn't be road legal at all.
I used to run Hancook tires and I would get anywhere from 60,000 to 70,000 miles out of them. And that was running the mud tires.
Hope to see you build you welding bed…one thing if I may ask can you show us how you lock your lids how you do it to get a clean look. Keep it up 👍
No excuses, all hustle. Keep it up brotha👏
Hey " A " man, always good to keep changing to meet the necessity, to say " necessity is the mother of inventions" , is the truth in our work. Hood down lights on.
Awesome stuff Austin, you sure are carrying a bunch more tooling than you used to pipelining. Looking forward to your new bed build and really requesting if you do if you can make plans available for purchase of the shop 🙏🏼
Toyo A/T & M/T tires is all that I run on all my trucks.
Thanks Austin for the upload and the tips
Eso que has adaptado muy bien por cierto en tu camioneta de trabajo es impensable de hacer en Europa, un saludo 👍
En Europe no Ay trocas asi?
Making it work. Great job. Watch out the DOT does not get you for loose stuff on your bed.
In the process of rigging up myself, now I just need to learn the fitting process 🤔
Like u sead good point every thing makes you motivated i get un motivated because i half to ghange plugs between welder and plasma cutter in my shop and even though it takes less then minut it de motivates u somthing simple as reaching down and un plug and plug each other most times that is where i leave off at end of day
Making it work, that's what matters!
Austin, two custom beds later and I'm still adding on. Two things, First, hire the chick that shows off the ladder on the info commercials for the "Little Giant." She's the only person I know that can keep from smashing her fingers on that finger pinching S.O.B. Second, Get / Build a deck over trailer. Easy to load and a great work bench. It's also a stable place to set a ladder... Keep em coming...
amaizing project, well done Austin
All those mods are cool. Glad you know a welder, ha!
Straight off the the Beverly Hill Billys, if it works for you it works for me.
Here I was thinking the next video was going be ‘camper for sale’ , but here is the man reasons about pipeli
The next video? What do you mean the next. What was the last video I posted?
When ever ya make a "T" handle to tighten a screw on a Truck or vehicle: Allways make one side longer or heavier; that way it won't, "motor off or unscrew in transport off"
As a union carpenter and freelance welder your correct in the construction world we have to ebb and flo
If and when you build a new bed you should raffle off your old bed… I want that bed
Kinda looks like you would benefit from a utility / service bed with a ladder rack now that your work has evolved. Less tools outside the body of the truck.
Look into the evolution 360 cold cut saw. One of the best fab tools I’ve bought.
If I might make an suggestion get speed binders you can use a drill to tighten them up.
haha Love the welded ratchet
Build a stand that will fit in a pipe jack then you can 30 ft joints easy. Don't know a pipeline that don't have some.
Best thing I ever did was buy the service truck, a real crane, shitload of storage, and nothing is out in the open. I have a Ranger on that is mounted to it, but can always crane the SA250 or the SAE4oo in to the bed. I do line boring so don't really need the big Lincoln much anymore
Man your a good dude. This is an excellent channel.
There is a difference in pulling winches and lifting winches. One for lifting would be better suited for your stripper pole lol
GREAT JOB DUDE - THANKS FOR ALL THE TIPS - LOVE THE RIG TOO
Thanks for sharing with us Austin. Can you control the camera from moving so much? Just wondering? Like the mods on the welding rig. Fred.🙏🏻🙏🏻👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👋👋
Austin you may want to get 3in drill pipe for your boom..
It works good for me on truck .
I like to see all of your videos they have helped me a lot. I always worked alone, and I see how you do it to make it easier for me. One question: How tall is your gen pole? That's a good idea
Man I like that chop saw setup!
Me too but I would be concerned for it getting rained on
Austin, I love your videos and take on life in general. I welcome you to cross the MA state line with all the appendages hanging off the back and obstructing your license plate, brake lighting, and rear bumper. $$$$ in tickets for sure. Do you take all of the appendages off to travel the road and highway?
Keep up great work. Helping me lots
Thanks for sharing. You gave me a lot of ideas!!!!!
Stay versatile my friend.
Try not to burn any Bridges.
And don't put all your eggs in one basket. 😄🤸
Check all the welding going on at SpaceX in South Padre.
Bad ass definitely a awesome set up
Right on
Nice rig, if it works for you, then it's perfect!
Yesss another upload baby whooohooo.
Hey austin ??? u still wearing the thorogoods ??? if so how are they holding up ?
Every Friday at five Central time baby! No mine need new souls and I have just not gotten any put on it yet so I am just wearing my twisted X loafers
I am planning on having two trucks rigged out at some point for different types of work. Although it probably isn't very practical for all you have going on, but I think if you keep that desire to pipeline again, you might rig out the old Ram as your local mobile welding rig and your black Ram as your pipeline rig? Just thinking out loud is all.
Question is, will biden allow that?
Tell us where to get the welding cap!
Great video
Your a Genius Gump!
Are you still working the pipeline ? Love the new set up ! Work hard or don’t work at all
When are you able to go back in the field and do pipe welding? What are you waiting for?

Why not trust in yourself and make your own retirement? I’ve been union about a third of my career of 26 years. For the second time I’m going off on my own. 2 major factors to decide. One you dictate the hours you work and you can take time as needed when needed. Family and God first. Second you can decide how much you need to make to be happy and support yourself and family. If you have 8 years union. You still need around 25 years right? With your skill set and adaptive learning you can make it faster on your own.
For sure, I agree. I personally just really enjoy pipeline… so I figure if I’m going to do it I might as well be putting towards my future while I’m at it. It will end up just being a lil cherry on top, that’s the goal anyway, seeing as how we definitely are in the process of building our own business and such in the mean time. That’s why I mentioned that it won’t be the end of the world if I don’t go out on a pipeline this year. I appreciate your input 👌😎 again, I agree.
No hoosier pole? First free stall barn I welded in helped make the decision to put one on my rig, leads are nicer when they're not covered in moo poo!
Why not a mechanics bed with a crane?
Hey there Austin, I met you guys at stew school 2 years ago. You did a killer job on that slick rig video and I loved seeing my truck on there. I’d sure like to talk to ya on the phone one of these days, I to have leaned into my own fabrication buisness and would like to pick your brain on some things. I’m also getting low on the wheel. Msg me on fb or where ever. 👌
Ah .... the wheel of misfortune. Unless you're one of the chosen pets.
@@RMS-gl6wl what do you mean?
Looks like a olds kool rig truck.
Do you reinforce the square tubing on the inside of your bed for you vise and chop saw?
get a utility bed with a crane big dawg!
Would consider a smaller welding machine to ad more bed space?
Does osha or DOT give you a hard time for transporting the gas cylinders in the horizontal position? I want to for my rig but I'm always paranoid I'm going to get slapped with a fine.
Do you prefer the single cab? How do you nap during forced downtime without being able to lay the seat back?
