  • The outbreak of bird flu currently tearing through the nation’s poultry is the worst in U.S. history. Scientists say it is now spreading beyond farms into places and species it has never been before.
Emily Anthes, a science reporter for The Times, explains.
Guest: Emily Anthes (www.nytimes.com/by/emily-anthes) , a science reporter for The New York Times.

It sounds like the train is coming down the track, and the virus weary public doesn't want to hear it.

Barn cats in at least one of those dairy farms also caught the bird flu and all died within 24-48 hours of exhibiting symptoms.

Good podcast! However I have a dumb question. Is the cattle industry about to collapse!? When a single bird in a commercial facility tests positive for bird flu, the entire group of hundreds of thousands or millions of birds are euthanized, this because the bird flu is so terribly dangerous? Yet while it is now apparent that this same bird flu has infected much of the nations dairy cattle (and most likely beef cattle as well), nobody has yet suggested euthanizing all the exposed cattle...... Why is that? Is the bird flu dangerous or not? How does this double standard work, as it seems starkly opposed to basic science? If you have to kill all the birds, why are you not killing the infected cows? Could financial interests be at play in the cattle industry? Would the price of beef double, triple, or quadruple if these same measures as applied to poultry farms were applied to cattle ranches? One more of the many leading edge questions I wish the MSM would focus on, in contrast to touting the authorities talking points.

Worst interview. Not 1 question about what we might do to safe guard bird flocks to make them safer for poultry and the rest of sentient populations.

At the beginning of the interview, within 30 seconds, she says that the fact that the flu is decimating bird flocks is terrible, but the "least of the scientists' concerns" given the flu's other unusual characteristics...
She thus frames her scope in this discussion. (The Daily is always 20 minutes and never totally covers a subject.)
The limit of that scope might not be satisfactory to your needs, but to classify it as "wost interview ever" because it doesn't cover what you want is frankly not a productive critique.
Bird flu has been a major issue since the 90s and the measures to try to protect from it are well known to anyone tangential to birds (I have chickens- I know we needed to keep wild birds out of their feed as much as possible, watch out for symptoms, etc.).
She does also explain concerns and controversies about a less than 100% effective vaccine masking the flu and facilitating transmission.
Otherwise, @natural.oil.tachikoma is correct- we do not have much in our arsenal and she says as much.
Otherwise, the discussion of how to prevent a 25 year old virus is just honestly not a very appropriate subject for a news podcast.
I offer this feedback respectfully as both a chicken owner, and as a professional ornithologist, because I see you are quite adamant about your opinion.
      Cheers.

@@Tanagra180 I listened and heard that. I appreciate you taking the time to write a well thought out response. The way we treat flocks and the environment around them has caused this mess. We need to change how we care for them and the planet and all of it's inhabitants. Not just humans. Scientists should be concerned holistically. I highly doubt that there aren't "scientists" out there with a different perspective. It might not be financially expedient in the short term, but is worth exploring. There are enough scientists for more than one problem to be worked on concurrently.

This virus is spreading among mammals for the first time. The virus seems to have mutated in a way that it is easily being spread from mammal to mammal. As crazy as this sounds, we should try to vaccinate animals to prevent the spread of this virus. And we should start producing vaccines for humans as soon as possible. We need to have vaccines ready to go for the time when this virus jumps to humans.

Big pharma won't make any until they can see a reasonable demand.
Sadly enough, they won't make drugs for diseases for some prople now etc, if they can get a return on investment.
