What Under The Silver Lake is Really About

The world of Under the Silver Lake seems... off. Whats going on? And what does it all mean? Is Under the Silver Lake simply a film about a man decoding a modern day conspiracy theory in the heart of LA? Or is there a deeper meaning beneath the surface? Sam's journey not only uncovers truths about his surroundings, but truths about himself, that by the end of the film he must face up to.

The film plays out like a video game plot. Everything seems to conveniently connect together. The conspiracy stuff and codes all perfectly line up. The characters around him all seem like NPCs too. Every woman is hot and seemingly interested in Sam sexually even when he looks like shit dressed in his PJs at a fancy party. Because of all this, I think its almost all a delusion. A film set inside the head of someone who has no purpose. A lost soul desperately searching for meaning in his life. Bit like Travis Bickle or The Narrator in Fight Club perhaps.

I agree with this. I was watching it thinking of how it's Super Mario - not only is that game shown, but there are hidden levels, underground levels, an underwater level, a boss to kill, a castle, a king and a princess to save. I also wondered about how some people don't mention his smell, and others do. I think this detail differentiates the real people from the illusions - possibly the ones who quip on his smell are figments of his imagination, seeing as these characters aren't actually connected to any of the other characters in the film.

Correct. The movie is the fantasy world of a mentally ill drug addicted homeless person. Its all in his imagination. At the end, he kills himself and goes to be with his mother, who is dead.

YES, THANK YOU! It is ridiculous how many people sailed right past the point of this film and started tearing apart every bit and it's funny to see that the film itself has all these hidden codes but in the end, they don't lead to anything new, you don't gain anything and still people miss the point that obsessing over this won't help them and they should let go!

I love this, it really helped to recontextualise my understanding of this film. I wasn't too keen on it initially, but I think it does have a lot of merit when you look at it in this way, as an archetypal example of a "neo-neo-noir". It is certainly a rare sub-genre, but perhaps "Mulholland Drive" is also one such film. I would love to do a podcast on this once I get around to re-watching it.

Even the "owl" on the dollar is a suggestion of pareidolia.
If you study these old damask-like patterns, it's probably just the edge of a leaf or another bud on the stem, but because the author tells him to look for an owl, see an owl, our brains can configure it through suggestion.

You said he can't escape LA. But the movie pairs that with a shot of the Hollywood sign. It's not LA he can't escape, its Hollywood (which is what my subtitles tell me the parrot is saying at the end). Is he accepting "reality"? Or is he accepting the illusion Hollywood is selling? Does his watching the Janet Graynor film symbolize he is growing up? Or is he becoming more of a mama's boy than ever (as he goes and sleeps with the mother aged neighbor immediately after)?

He’s the dog killer, what that symbolism means I don’t know, but he’s the dog killer. Also he was going to kill the girls dog. Also the hating homeless people thing has to mean something too. I also think he was the one who killed the writer, he scoped out person and place cuz of the comic talking about him the dog killer. He went there then went back to kill him when he had gotten his trust on a second meeting or maybe even unreliable narrator first time. He then went back to retrieve the evidence recordings.

there are DOZENS of clues pointing in that direction. I was trying to find the video where I first posted this list to add a bunch more clues, but these alone are more than enough to prove it as far as i'm concerned... just watching another video, I saw him wearing a teeshirt with an alligator and a person swimming underwater. he's the gator that eats rich girl. alligators are known to eat dogs who drink unsuspecting. here's SOME proof:
      - women in the movie bark LIKE DOGS at him
      - he carries a dog bisquit
      - he does his girlfriend DOGGIE STYLE
      - the "homeless man" (really HIM I believe) tells him to FOLLOW RARE COYOTES (celebrities) while stalking dogs (ugly women and/or "beaches") is "normal"
      - he's there when "rich girl" (the coyote he stalked and who says SOMEONE IS FOLLOWING ME) gets shot after refusing to have sex with him
      - the dog killer comic book sticks to HIS "spiderman hand"!!!!
      - he sees "her" (his alter ego) 3 times... (small world... with a small hole in his window no one could fit through)
      - he doesn't actually leave, when he sees her IN HIS HOME (another NOT coincidence) because he gets kicked out, he IMAGINES the threat of the landlord or cops showing up. they are PROJECTIONS in his mind in the apartment that isn't actually his! he sleeps in parks, graveyards and tunnels where he's king, or pharaoh
      - he's whacked out on conspiracy theories that DISTRACT the viewer from all the stalking and attacking he does including kids
      - he very clearly kills songwriter on one of his break and enters and has no remorse over it
      - he masturbated to the "drowned girl" playboy book cover that gets revisited when rich girl gets shot and does a similar pose. he's into necro
      - all of the celebs that get mentioned in the movie are dead and many under controversial circumstances like marilyn monroe in sarah's movie
      - kurt cobain comes up several times in the movie. the nirvana "nevermind" record cover with the underwater baby is very similar to the playboy cover
      - the dog killer kills naked... he's naked when rich girl dies, when he "doggies" his GF,
      - sarah, who he SPIES ON and goes on a STALKING SPREE for (creepy how he freaked out over a gal he JUST MET moving out, like she owes him something) has A DOG for which he carries said bisquits
      - the comic book is "locally produced" (possibly HIS)
      - I believe he kills his GF "the actress" as she's in the bathroom with him talking about how he stinks in the RED FILLED tub. where he killed her, or took her afterwards
      - there are CONSTANT death references in the film eg. jesus (died) and his undead vampire backup singers
      - both he and his friend are TOTALLY indifferent to the woman they're SPYING ON under what looks like death threats scaring the crap out of her. nope, they don't care about her distress
      - the dog killer sign is seen from the INSIDE of the restaurant and is backwards, making me think the story is told in reverse. he gets the gun after killing songwriter and THEN can shoot rich girl... the "girl of his dreams" just like the playboy cover and the nirvana cover
      - the story in the movie "his mother taped for him" is very similar to UTSL. *Seventh Heaven* it’s about a prostitute who *gets saved from violence by a gutter cleaner*, then falls in love with him before he goes to war. (just the kind of movie a man getting calls from a dead mother might have seen)
      - a delusional paranoid would have crazy conspiracy theories. it was funny how he all of a sudden becomes an "expert code breaker" using random items, and even manages to figure out the initials stand for that gaming magazine which he CONVENIENTLY has a copy of!
      - as someone mentions in another reply, he says he hates dogs.
      - he seems enamored by celebrities and money... things a homeless psycho would covet
      - he wakes up in a cemetery by a tombstone (thought it was janet gaynor's) along with trash... another destination for murder victims
      - sarah EVENTUALLY winds up ENTOMBED with 6 months worth of supplies. MAYBE he dragged her to HIS TUNNEL, but either way, she will die (she's naked in the pool and barks)
      - after leaving "his (?) apartment" as a HOMELESS MAN (backwards sign!), he moves on to HIS NEXT VICTIM he's been spying on... another (half) NAKED character.
      - I think the signed nirvana poster is really “the acress’” in her home that he invaded
      - I think the cereal (killer!) box map is REALLY a "map of the stars", his preferred targets

always surprises me how much people look into films for deeper meaning, while i generally just take them at face value, i love this movie for its vibe, im not looking for a message about self improvement or misogyny in hollywood, I couldnt care less
i enjoy Polanski movies like The Ghostwriter and The Ninth Gate, but i find it difficult to describe what it is I like about them properly, its like an escape into a cool world with an interesting mystery, I find it relaxing and therapeutic
i appreciate the chill atmosphere and immersion these directors can create, rather than any hidden message theyre trying to deliver, ironically I guess in the case of UTSL

  • @eurotriper
    @eurotriper Před měsícem

About 99% of this happened in his head. He is a paranoid schizophrenic. He is the dog killer. The owl woman is imaginary and symbolizes suicide. He only saw her at his absolute lowest when he made it back to his apartment and she never touched him because she wasn’t real, he even peaked in his fucking sock drawer to look for her. The three women adoring over a millionaire in a bunker is a twisted version of the movie he watched earlier. He smells bad not due to a skunk but because his schizophrenic and very common problem for them is they smell absolutely awful and do not remember to bathe. The homeless king at the end was a cop questioning him, see the star on his chest and his tone asking about the biscuits. Everything that he “figures out” about this giant conspiracy theory is solved by shit he already has lying around his apartment. The bird at the end is saying “not a friend. Not a friend. Not a friend”. He also has red paint laying in his apartment. This is way out of order I know but there is a lot of shit like this in the movie.
