    39:25 had a good response (and good humor) regarding denominations. Many times denominations themselves are levied against Christianity as a point deviation from unity and therefore an error. I see them as branches of a tree that has the same roots and trunk (essential doctrine) which allows a certain degree of liberty in the implications of those doctrines insofar as they relate to more peripheral topics (church governance, baptism, eschatology).

    I am truly aghast at what appeared to be such a casual dismissal of a clear Christological statement in Hebrews regarding Melchizedek and not even a passing consideration of Psalm 110:4; never mind the apportioning of sinlessness to Melchizedek through contrasting with the Levitical priesthood (Hebrews 7:1-3). How could sinlessness be apportioned to any "man" but Jesus?
    Once again this appears to be just another example of "demythologizing" Scripture (i.e., removing the supernatural and replacing it with mundane and worldly explanations).
    I was waiting for Pastor Lawson to get up and leave the stage. I wish he had.
    Maranatha!

      Jack...
      In saying this without being contentious,
      That's an irrational position that doesn't take into account the context of the situation.
      The enigmatic nature of Melchizedek does have multiple conservative scholarly treatments and necessary understandings... And while the earnestness in heart that is important in preserving the supernatural nature of such things, promoting sensationalized reactions- themselves have their own slipknots that remove guardrails of reasonability.
      Such is the contention within the cessation debate. Whether the gifts are over...or... the exception... or simply dormant, the continuation side has difficulty in regulating the floodgates of subjectivity. But a full *cessationist (edit) understanding is not honoring the text either. Such also is the varying positions on Genesis 6 and the Sons of God.
      No one on this panel is advocating demethologizing or liberal dismissal of anything in the text.
      and Steve Lawson would lose credibility in the interaction that you were advocating.
      The discussions in these comment sections are an attestation to the volatile nature of the church itself and the predicament that shepherds find themselves in... because the championing of certain positions without consideration for viable range of understanding is irresponsible.
      God bless

      @@HearGodsWord You misunderstand me, sir. I believe that Pastor Lawson was the only uncompromised man of integrity on the stage. I think that for the sake of unity and the legacy of Pastor Sproul, that is why he remained silent and did not get up and leave.
      There will come a time sooner or later, when the compromise will become simply too much and it will be then when Pastor Larson gets up and does not come back. I believe it is inevitable, unless, of course the rest of the panel members repent of their drift and reaffirm a full and complete reliance on the Scripture as completely inerrant and fully sufficient. Amen.

      There is a difference between types and phany. Christophany is seen in Genesis 18, Daniel 3 etc. But types are seen everywhere. Melchizedek was a type. He was an actual King of Salem who came to meet Abraham with Bread and Wine and Abraham gave him tithes. No hint is given anywhere about Melchizedek being a Christophany

    RE: GOD BEING A JEALOUS GOD. I think of jealousy as a "branch of justice". God is perfectly righteous to be jealous when something due to Him is given to another, and He expresses ALL his atributes perfectly and simultaneously. Something that we as finite and intrinsically sinful creatures are incapable of doing.

    Paul isolated an outstanding fact respecting Melchizedek, in saying of him: “In being fatherless, motherless, without genealogy, having neither a beginning of days nor an end of life, but having been made like the Son of God, he remains a priest perpetually.” (Heb 7:3) Like other humans, Melchizedek was born and he died.
    However, the names of his father and mother are not furnished, his ancestry and posterity are not disclosed, and the Scriptures contain no information about the beginning of his days or the end of his life. Thus, Melchizedek could fittingly foreshadow Jesus Christ, who has an unending priesthood.
    As Melchizedek had no recorded predecessor or successor in his priesthood, so too Christ was preceded by no high priest similar to himself, and the Bible shows that none will ever succeed him. Furthermore, although Jesus was born in the tribe of Judah and in the kingly line of David, his fleshly ancestry had no bearing on his priesthood, nor was it by virtue of human ancestry that the offices of both priest and king were combined in him.

      @@truthbetold8610 Hmm, why would you ask that? Paul was an Apostle, a sent one of God specifically called by Him/Jesus to be one of the foundation stones of the church. And he was an intellectual giant. No, I am a BIG fan of Paul. I'm just not convinced that he was the huma author of the letter to the Hebrews.

    • @truthbetold8610
      @truthbetold8610 Před 2 lety +1

      @@Shabeck100 I have seen several people sharply criticize Paul saying he was a liar and a false Apostle and I wondered if you shared that opinion. I defended Paul, If he was chosen by Jesus to preach to Gentiles and write most New Testament books then how can anyone say he's a liar?
      For critics to reject, for example, the book of Hebrews simply because it does not bear Paul’s name and because it differs slightly in style from his other letters is shallow reasoning.
      B. F. Westcott observed that “the canonical authority of the Epistle is independent of its Pauline authorship.” (The Epistle to the Hebrews, 1892, p. lxxi) Objection on the grounds of unnamed writership is far outweighed by the presence of Hebrews in the Chester Beatty Papyrus No. 2 (P46) (dated within 150 years of Paul’s death), which contains it along with eight other letters of Paul.

    • @Shabeck100
      @Shabeck100 Před 2 lety

      @@truthbetold8610 I hold to the God-breathed nature of the book of Hebrews independent of being certain of its human author (which, in my present understanding, may have been Luke - who was a close associate of Paul). I certainly don't think Paul was a liar and I am all for Paul being the human author of the 13 letters which bear his name and perhaps even Hebrews...though I'm not wholly convinced and it ultimately doesn't impact how I treat these Scriptures. I hope this makes some sense.

    I do enjoy the knowledge these men have but it seems like they don’t believe that The Holy Spirit can speak to people other than through Gods word. Which I know God can speak to and though a person hence by His Holy Spirit that dwells inside a believer. The knowledge of the Bible is on that platform but when that knowledge is spoken to the audience is it coming from the person or The Spirit of God. I would rather it come from The Latter. JS.
