- I end up going through my 1999 Honda 400ex to see why it is smoking. These quads are known to smoke, and fining one that doesn't is pretty rare. #SmokeyGirl, #Honda, #400cc,

Well this 1999 Honda 400ex is one smokey girl...Maybe it just wants to be a 2 stroke lol

pls rebuild it. Probably the piston ring must change.
Oil rings could be buggered or or it could have a lot of oils built up in the the exhaust i had one and it had same problem which was just the exhaust best of take the tip off and put the rest in a hot Fier and it will clear it all out
U need to start presswashing ur stuff before u start working on it I hate ppl that work on dirty stuff
It’s definitely more put toward valve seals but the oil ring could be going bad but it isn’t the worst because my 400ex has a bad oil ring and it won’t even run half decent because the thing runs with oil in the gas due to a bad oil ring.
Do the oil ring on the the piston and the head gasket
Keep the vids coming man, lovin it
Definitely needs a top end . Smoke under load / power is rings . These 400s are known to get smokey . Need to get a mic and some telle gauges and measure the cyl and piston to see if she's within spec .
This man actually knows what he's talking about. My quad needed rings and did the same thing
Yeah new top end in that thing is gonna be hard to kill
Valve guides nobody ever puts them in Honda's are bad for it or rings .
More than not a bad valve guide will smoke on startup and clear out as it warms up with an occasional puff of smoke. My bet is rings as well, gets progressively worse as it warms up.
Ver happy for you joe the way that the channel has grown and im glad that you get do what you love everyday keep up the good worl and congrats to you and jade on the new house 👍
“Well we know where the oils going, let’s clean out the CaRbErAtOr”
😆
lmao
🤣🤣🤣
Today me and my dad are fixing the carberater on a new 125 mini four wheeler
Don’t buy cheep China parts when rebuild it buy oem parts
Honda 4 strokes usually never need anything fixed thats why its never been apart. They will run forever
Lol I don't believe that every engine needs maintenance 4 strokes need the valves lashed every so often and in this video it needs rings lol 2 strokes run forever lol alot of plane engines are 2 stroke
@@Stoner-dk8ox Notice i did say Honda 4 strokes. The motors definitely depend on the owner/rider and the make. I don't care what anyone says, a 4 stroke honda is the most reliable engine ever put on a cycle. Period.
The 400ex is known for quick piston ring failure and valve seal failure both causing smoke my 02 400ex has a bad oil ring on the piston causing the engine to run like a two stroke mixing oil in the gas burning the oil
It's a 2 stroke that he is working on not a 4 stroke
Honda’s do run forever. I had a ‘97 300ex and it went over a year without me putting oil in it and it still started up every single day with no hassle. Even after I got rid of it, it still ran fine on the same top end and everything. He just told me the other day it still runs lol.
I just rebuilt a 2007 new cam valve valve ceets but if it’s been smoking before u got it then there is oil in the exhaust it will smoke until it burnt out
Informative vid many thanks Joe!!!
I can’t believe changing the oil and cleaning the carb fixed the smoking. I was guessing it needs to be honed and new file fit ring set at the least.
It's the oil ring but might as well replace the whole ring set. For someone who flips so many older bikes, I don't think I've ever seen you hone ONE cylinder. That little bit (bit) goes a long way. What's happening is there is wear on the rings or possibly the cylinder wall. On the down strokes, the oil is making it's way into the combustion area above the piston and igniting. Hence the smoke. Just like in a 2 stroke, your burning lesser refined petrol. Since a four stroke has such high compression, it's still running but if this were a two stroke, that little bit of blow-by would cause stalling or failure. It could also be valve seals or the valves themselves as oil could be making it's way into the combustion chamber from above.
Yes man that are bad valve seals i had the same problem on my quad build series.
Your brilliance is so bright I gotta wear shades. Best part of all this is the amount of people out there that see you as a knowledgeable person
Good video joe! Love the 400ex they are fun an reliable !
Valve seals you will notice when u first start the bike I always thought it seeps thru into the cylinder when the bike sits
Exactly!!
You literally just save my quad bro it definitely was my seals
Correct. It'll smoke at first and go away. Rings if its a constant smoke.. unless you literally have no valve seals lol.
For whatever reason my honda trx250 never burns any oil idk why, i know its not uncommon for them but i guess i got lucky with mine haha
Seals and.smels like burnt oil
Its actually a pretty common problem with these quads, a lot of the old ones that you find around normally smoke. As other people have already said its the valve seals. My suzuki 230 somtimes burns a little oil when its started after sitting for a while.
Nice vid, love your channel. Hi from Sweden. I don´t have a cross bike but I do have a moped from the 60´ s
Awesome!

These quads are notorious for valve seals I’ve changed them more times than I’d like to count here at my shop. I wouldn’t waste your time with cleaning the carburetor and I wouldn’t give it an oil change until after you change the valve seals and have the motor apart.
I've unstuck rings with some atf down the spark plug hole on an old atc 200x. I honestly think that's what wrong. If it were the valve seals you would only see smoke on startup after sitting.
It's rings or a blockage in the breather. Valve stem seals will smoke at idle not under load.
I put regular 10w 40 Valvoline oil in mine I have read it will make the clutch slip should I go ahead and change it again or wait till next oil change
If your case vent is going into your air box the filter will pull oil in the carburetor? When poping wheelies this happens to some quads or Yamaha tri moto 200
Exhaust valves and seals . Is that plug or piston have burnt oil residue on it .
My old sportster started smoky, fouled plugs .
Skip sea foam
That’s for marine and outboards 2 stroke .
Maybe rings but I’m
Going exhaust valve and seals
Hey, I have a 03 trx 250 ex that idles super super high at start. Adjusted the screw on side of carb but it doesn’t affect the idle. What do you think is happening? I’m not a mechanic, just started working on this stuff.
I'd hone the cylinder new rings and valve stem seals bud .
what this mans said ^
Hey I have a question do you have to jet a carburator if you put a slip on on the bike
Why would you clean the carb , that won’t stop it smoking, it’s the valve stem oil seals
Wheel shake could be caused by the tires being toed outward.
It needs a top end mines did the same thing I try everything and it smoked till I put a top end
Did you check the headlight fluid?? Sometimes that will help the smokey engine issue ... 😁
I'll tell you what happen to my recon 250....I sank it in muddy water and it started smoking after that so I would guess that may have happened to your 400 with that open filter box ?.....I would do a full top end rebuild on it....so worth it to save a classic like that....keep up the great work 👍👍👍
I have also problem with my Zongshen 250 quad. When i rode one lap in forest it starts smoking blue. Please can someone give me advice.
That intro was clean hahaha
Your not supposed to twist the dip stick in when checking the oil level. Just push it in until it stops on the threads. So you probably have less oil than you actually think
Most Honda Manuel’s tell you to screw it back in
@@mcgrawmadness5990 not this 1
It's not valve seals as the smoke would clear after a short run time but the smoke is pretty consistent. Try dropping the viscosity of the oil and replacing oil rings. A four strokes oil rings can blow while the compression rings are still good and the bike runs great. So a thicker oil synthetic oil, and new rings.
I think you solwed my problem on my wr250f
Quick question, what causes the Honda 400 to back fire
Hey I have a 99 400ex & it runs decent on low end around my yard but when racing or any full throttle runs after I pull in the clutch to slow down the quad dies. New carb but a aftermarket car, anyone kno my issue?
hey joe would you be able to ship any bikes or quads to stamford ct? i can pay for shipping. tell me if you have anything for sale(it has to be in good condition.)
you should blow all that crap off the carb with an airline before putting it in the cleaner then all that thick grime isnt flowing through you're carb and fouling up you're fluid
You’re not supposed to screw the dipstick back in when checking the oil level. Your oil was extremely low.
Yeah I don’t think they have a clue what they’re doing with this stuff
you are correct. after you take it out you wipe it off and then place it back in all the way do not thread it back in. Just stick it in and back out and thats the oil level. However the jug makes it pretty forgiving. If you are doing it from the crank case that oil would need to be perfect.
You are supposed to screw the dipstick in
@@mesggdaahbf5786 yeah he does check out his newer videos he can rebuild a 4-stroke engine better than I can
It's a really nice 400ex & good video
I bought a 2001 with a 440 kit and stage 3 hot cam for $1100, with no leaks, no smoke, no valve tick, nothing, very good quad
Mine smokes when cold and goes away once warmed, already replaced the valve seals and no change
Sounds like my Predator 500 and my predator has a bad seal so it has a tiny bit of blue smoke when I rev it up, but I’m glad it’s not the rings that I have to replace on it, it’s just a seal.
Love your content bro nothing but love for ya 💯💯
Thank you!
A easy Tipp: blue smoke = burned Oil
Black smoke = Fuel problem's.
White equals coolant
Build a wheelie bar for it to help train your wheelie skills and clutch throttle and rear brake coordination!
Great video 👍👍👍
Adjust the valves replace rings and all top end gaskets just to be safe permatex copper works great for high temp applications
So on my bike dirt got under me oil ring on the piston and pushed it on to the first slot bc it started up instantly
It started up fine and everything and it start smoking so I’m thinking ur on ring on ur piston slip and is letting oil in
just thought i would let you know that there is a specific way to check the oil on a 400ex
If it is valve seals they are not super hard to do but like you said you might as well do rings since its a couple of more bolts to make sure the motor feels good and do break it in those gaskets on the head really to need time to set in my buddies blew his valve cover gasket directly after rebuilding the whole motor because he decided to tp rip on it for like 10 15 minutes during break in
Nothing but a new oil ring is gonna fix the dam smoking. Maybe just maybe the vales are not seated right. But i like how optimistic you are it not needing to be rebuilt tho. I do the same ill try everything else before i break down a fix the problem u gotta try atleast. An have u started learning how to properly tune things. I know ive said it in the past but you'll get alot more performance out of any bike if you know how to tune. An pls dont use a flat head to gwt the 2 cases apart you will dent it an it will not seal right yes im sure you where carful an what not but so was I when i use to do that untill u put a hairline gash in a case once an had to double up on gaskets. An yes i did sand it down to get a flat surface so it sealded again but use a dead blow hammer or tap on the case to get 1 to fall off.
ya dont need to split the cases to fix a smokey exhaust, its a top end issue, on a single cylinder 4 stroke it would take half a day so rebuild that top end. dont even need to pull the engine out.
Have u changed the rings
I've got a 300ex it smoked when I first bought it 7 years ago I put new rings in it never smoked again
Why do you hold the clutch in when you start it ? If it’s neutral you don’t have too.
I appreciate the video.
Its most likely just the oil rings I had the same problem on my xr250 burnt so much oil it covered your back when you rode it just put an oil ring in it and was fine
The king of taking apart everything but what needs to be fixed
18:23 When I go to take a piss in the morning
Also tou can do a valve adjustment to see if its valves or not. If its burning oil. More than likley. Needs piston rings.
It needs new rings on the piston. Had the same problem. Fixd mine.
When doing wheelies just remember Foot Brake.
The head pipes probably full of oil after it’s been rollled I’ve seen a few do that after a few Jill climb flips
Oil ring or valve seals
When you do wheelies try putting one foot back
Do U thing u can do a ttr125
To check the oil you need to have the bike run for a little
I had a Suzuki quad sport ltz 400 it did the same thing it was the valve seals
I have an o1 rancher. Put new piston and rings and an used ebay head. With new valve seals...smokes almost as bad as this one does...runs great though!
Check the piston head?
I bet its the exhaust valve seals if it was the intake valve seals the smoke would subside as you ride it
Yes
Could use rings and also u need to turn the idle up
5:01 that's what she said lol
Need to clean the air filter to
Time for a freshened up top end!!!
Great video. You made some good progress on that machine. I feel it needs that top end re-build. I think you’ll have a good solid machine after that. I’d hang on to it. They don’t make sport quads like that anymore. Nice 4 stroke for those winter rides around your new neighborhood! Just throw a silencer in there. Keep up the videos.
Is it just me or does it look like the front tires tread are going in the wrong direction??
Ex 400 are common to have bad valve stem oil seals overtime, change them and guarantee it won't smoke
What’s ur personal machines
When checking the oil do not screw the oil cap in that was very low
If you run your finger around the end of the exhaust and if it feels gummy that means ur burning oil which means u need new rings
Mine smoked but just put little oil in before a ride and never had a problem with it had plenty of power
Use that back break and learn the balance point. Get those front tires up there! The easiest to learn is to tip her over a few times.
Its either carb or oil in the exhaust not the top rnd tho
i think you have a exhaust leak my friend.. i see smoke comming befor the exhaust... might want to fix that
There is a exhaust gasket that will fix it. They cost like 10 bucks its a odd gasket.
need to change the whole exhuast also do piston rings and new top end gasket she fly
You should make a video on cleaning a gas tank there is rarely any videos
Who cares if it smokes? Ride that thing til she needs a rebuild..😆👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Mine bogs down when I continue to do that
They should have made a deeper lid for that cleaner machine just for what your doing right now.
They make different size ultra sonic cleaners. Lol. He just bought the cheapest!!!
My 07 trx250ex smokes a little when u first start it
Because it needs rings or valve seals..
Your muffler needs re packing you can hear the rattling when you rev it.
idk if it is with you quad, but when you put to much oil, it is smoking very from the motor
it's your oil ring that needs to be changed on your piston might as well just change your rings to
Those are good all around bikes
Wheres the yz250?
The feeler gage should just barely drag
Start with a set of rings , it can have good compression an the oil still get passed the oil ring , way easier job then to try an do valve seals first , i wouldnt run it like that youll hurt something more in the long run , if its burning that much oil its not valve seals
Hey man dont use see foam I would change the piston and the rings and go from there
Wats sea foam do?
Jeremy Hackett remove carbon build up on your piston
Check your valves Honda 400ex are known for valve issues. The ltz/kfx/dvx are known for electrical problems. I’ve owned multiple 400ex and ltz and all the 400ex needed valves adjusted
