I Played EVERY Game Submitted to my GAME JAM (and LOST my MIND) - Reviewing Game Dev Submissions

  • So last weekend marked the end of the review period for the indie game jam I hosted to celebrate hitting 2k subs on this CZcams channel and I couldn't believe how many people submitted! It was truly mind boggling and, while I never told anyone my plan, I always intended to play and review those game projects right here on this channel. Of course I never could've imagined that the turnout would be so incredible by the all of the talented indies out there taking the the next step in their learning process with this jam.
This game jam was inspired by some of the greats (Game Maker's Toolkit, Brackeys, etc) but I did allow for longer time period than most game jams lost to make it more accessible for new indie game devs who are maybe even making their first game dev project.
We had over 45 Submissions and the winners will also be posted over on the itch.io page shortly when the reviews are made public!
This channel does a lot of indie game devlog projects (focusing on a Unity based project at the moment) but, no matter what game making software you use, this channel is very much meant to inspire new game devs and provide some direction on how to succeed as an indie game dev.
This video is intended both for reviewing the games in a positive light as well as hopefully being entertaining to those who are just interested in games in general. Hopefully everyone can find it funny and inspirational at times.
Congratulations to EVERY developer that submitted and of course a MASSIVE congrats to our amazing WINNERS! Thank you so much!

That was so much fun to do, Thank you for hosting this and thank you for the feedback.
Placing 12th is amazing for us and that with our second project.
We are working on this project more, things we wanted to add but ran out of time. Like that abrupt ending (it's terrible), a small tutorial, combat feedback and more.

The Butter Hurry "heads" are the godot logo, which is indeed the symbol for the game engine they used, "Godot" (no pronunciation, every way is equally as correct or wrong) and it's veeery common for it to be used as a default icon for testing code or as a placeholder. A lot of godot games will be made ENTIRELY from that head at the start: bullets, enemies, the player character, the WALLS, everything.

Just finished the entire video, It was an honour to participate in the jam, coming in with the mindset of learning how to improve based on feedback off a group of people, I truly was not expecting to come first place, but none the less I'm delighted for the experience and am proud to have come where I have, I'll be using what I have gained during this experience to evolve when creating future games, and again thank you for hosting the gamejam! *I also now have to update the video I'm currently making about my development of Over||Under Flow* as its slightly outdated now :D.
I also loved hearing the feedback presented to each game and seeing all the ideas come to life!

I'm like blown away with the bomb tosser thing! What the heck bro. I get that you put a lot of effort into trying to make this game jam great for everyone and it can seem like it was a huge hit to that effort you put in. But also, it's like 1 sentence that was very matter of fact. He gave an experience that he though was true, hearing from you it was obviously wrong but focusing on the guy saying that a negative attitude will close doors?
Bro this is so wild, it was a misunderstanding on his part, its weird his comments were being deleted somehow and I can understand why he felt the way he felt. But it wasn't your fault and it wasn't his fault that he interpreted it that way. Very strange and weird way to react to one person who had a bad experience.

My goal is never to be cruel or harsh and I wasn't trying to tear him apart or anything. I do see online a lot that a vocal minority of younger game devs behave very unprofessionally online and I just wanted to show how that type of behavior realistically comes off to the rest of the community. It's possible I perceived his behavior as more petulant than maybe he intended it but I had no idea what he was talking about. I gave at least a dozen people the opportunity to fix issues with their game when they brought them to me, which took a lot of time and effort, and I didn't understand why they would frame this as being against me except out of like victim mentality and petulance.
I just don't want younger devs to think it's OK to behave unprofessionally online or blame/attack others. I think it's important that people see what is acceptable and what isn't and I was just trying to outline that. I was just trying to use this (and the one following it) to outline how attitude can alter the way you're going to be seen in the community and how to model less negative behavior.
I really wasn't trying to be a jerk. I thought I was approaching it in a lighter way overall

I kind of agree. Was his statement passive aggressive? Yes. But assuming bad faith and going after the guy on a very public platform is arguably more unprofessional. Honestly 3gnomes should have just ignored the submission, the game wasn't even playable anyway.

@@3gnomesgames909Then leave a comment on his page, dude. It's really crummy to publicly deride what is undoubtedly a child having a bad experience. Even if they were being petulant, you're effectively handing your audience an easy path and an excuse to harass them.

Idk the submitter could have just stated that his comments were disappearing and wasn’t getting a response from the host and that would have gone over a lot smoother than just assuming he was being shunned. I feel that 3Gnomes handled it very well. I believe the comment about poor attitude closing doors isn’t a threat but a general warning. The dev lead with emotion and the host responded with logic.

For future reference, if anything like this ever comes up again, most people who had issues reached out to me directly on Discord. I try to make myself very available when people need help there. dude I saw my game and was very happy seeing all the stuff you liked! When I made was making the game I had a few days left as I totally forgot about making it because I was playing Helldivers 2 lol. Even if the game was buggy and it got 42nd place (The game was IT CAME FROM THE EXPIRED BOX) I still had fun making it as this was the first time I made music for a game that I released. There was stuff that I had to cut because of time like cutscenes of where the Slime monsters came from and working out how to work the Mouse positioned flip. If you ever make another game jam I would be happy to join that with more knowledge on coding.

thanks for this jam, I wasn't able to sumbmit my game but I continuened the project after the jam endended. I wanted to make a pong with skills which you had 5 seconds to use them, otherwise they would pass to your enemy. I thought this scope was small enough for my first game jam, but it wasn't lol. I managed to finish a pong game 1 week after the jam ended, and I don't plan in adding those skills so fast because I prefer working in other small games to learn new mechanics faster. But either way your jam was the open door for me making my first finish game (a pong with menu, settings, sound, sound effects, win and lose screen). So thanks again!

I'm happy you liked my game (BringMeTheWater)! Very kind words!
Let me rate your video :D
I think you could add some suggestions on how you might build upon the jam entries. Not because "that" is what the author should do. It would provide authors another perspective on what they certainly planned for their respective games.
I really liked that you pointed out problems and flaws in the games. I guess some won't like it, but any form of constructive critic can only help to improve the games and the devs!
Thanks for taking the time to play each and every game - it's not something I ever expected from a game jam host!

The value of the feedback i got is tremendous and really helped me see through the player's perceptive. I'm a little confused about a few things in this video. It seems strange the few projects seemingly targeting for use of "Assets". Around 60 - 70% of the games in this video are using premade assets. Is the idea here to just pull up the people who actually credited the makers? Another thing was the AI game. A lot of people cited this jam as their first or second game, believe me there is more than 1 AI assisted game in here, if not literally all of them.
What's more confusing to me is, everything I just said sticks out like a sore thumb, so I guess my question is whether you noted this and choose to ignore it?
I don't mean any ill intent by this, I'm just genuinely curious if u intended to have this strange bias.

I agree, if anyone read anything posted the last months its very likely that AI was involved in writing it in some way. Also funny how use it or lose it kinda applies to AI also, most studios that try to do development for their lively-hod will have to use AI if they want to put food on their table.

    • @Bighaid91
      @Bighaid91 Před měsícem +1

@@VforVictorYTclaiming that AI will be required for future indies is hurtful, it’s directly saying that independent studios aren’t good enough to make games. I don’t think that is true and is proven through game jams, showing that ideas can be expressed and shared to the public.

    • @Bighaid91

@@Bighaid91 No one is saying just AI created these games. The dude mentioned AI assisted. That could literally mean anything from using copilot, all the way up to generating an entire idea from nothing.
My assumption comes from the fact that someone with no experience is likely to turn to whatever tools are available at the time to get things done. Especially in a time crunch.
I don’t perceive this as bad at all. Aslong as the devs continue to put the time in learning.

@@zekenebel Have you made a game for a game jam? I know from experience that people don’t join game jams to submit something, but to learn. Hey I love you and enjoy your videos usually but something really uncomfortable happened during this video and I was reminded of a certain prejudice I see emerging against outside artist coders and particularly against AI. I just want to encourage you to reconsider your stance against AI. It sounds like you already are, but the idea of disqualifying AI projects is not only wrong for practical reasons, it emotionally bothers me. With all the respect in the world. I hope to resubscribe again soon.

    • @3gnomesgames909
      @3gnomesgames909  Před měsícem

Hey I get that and to be clear, I have nothing against AI as a tool. I think there are maybe some ethical concerns in terms of art, possibly, but please don't think I have anything against developers who use AI as a tool.
The only reason I put a rule against it in this jam is because it was largely geared towards VERY NEW developers and I do have concerns that sometimes new developers can hurt their understanding of the fundamentals if they use these tools. For example, I think it's too easy to put together code you don't understand using AI that will never work with the other parts of your game because you don't know enough to put it together later. I think it's important to understand the basics before you start using those tools.
In the future, I'll seriously consider whether that's a rule I should keep or not. Maybe it's better to not include it and simply express my concerns beforehand.
Anyways please don't feel like I have any ill will towards those who use AI. I only 'disqualified' (kind of) the one game because I did specify in the rules of this year's jam that I'd prefer it not be used. And even then I didn't disqualify them from showing up in the rankings.
