This chordal trick is insanely simple, and will make you sound like a pro!
The idea is to approach the voicing from a half-step above, followed by a half-step below. This creates a hip, 'outside' kind of sound with minimal effort on your part.
You can use this concept with any voicing, in any progression in any context. It works especially well when playing neo-soul / hip hop.

Your two handed chords are heavenly sounds.
Damn this sounds fly but also so simple. I've been doing plenty of passing from a semitone above, but it sounds so much more grounded when you approach from above AND below
I dreamed to learn how to play the piano, i'm a music producer and i've always been thinking about it but never had enough self-confidence i guess..
Thank to you guys i'm now starting to learn by myself and its a daydream.
Piano is pure beauty and love.
Peace

I get extremely inspired by your videos Simon, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us 🙏🏾
GOLD!! Thanks mate.
Feel like you've encapsulated Henry Wu's entire career in a few minutes, sounds like so much of the Yussef kamaal approach patterns. Beautiful trick
Hi Simon, thank you once again very much for an excellent tutorial.
Love this tips, useful and really good. Please do more improvisation videos over chords. Thanks!
Always great, thanks!

You’re welcome!
FIRE!!! Loved this man, thank you so much
Thanks man! 🙏
Another great video - thanks...
My pleasure!
DAYUM, this is sick. I will definitely be using this alot.
Landing on a minor chord sounds funky as well
Dude this sounds so sick. Going from Eb to Ab to Bb, and adding some 2-5-1.
Classic enclosure sequence.
Super tasty. Thanks.
It's cool
Could you go deeper into the runs / variations on the voicings you do in this video?
I like the approach concept but I feel the extra stuff you do is what really makes it shine.
This video was just about that chromatic enclosure concept, but check out this video for tips on those other bits I was playing: czcams.com/video/3fHNxRaAAs8/video.html
Hey with ChatGPT I've asked it to write a jazz chord progression with extensions may be a fun video. I also then asked it to write a melody. which it did.
Conversation
write a jazz chord progression in Bb that has a 2 A sections and 1 B section, the chords must use extensions, each section must have 10 unique chords
next conversation
write a melody for the previous progression
i dont usually comment but im watching your content since a long time and you’re always killing it !!
Thanks Mac, I appreciate that! 🙏
Great tip, first video I've seen and I'm keen to see more. Have you got any good backing track links?
Hey it sounds really jazzy and nice, might use it for some of my beats, but how is it minors? I just learned chords minor and major today? I dont get it, can someone explain to me please? I learned that major go 3-2 and minors go 2-3
Can you show me how to play melodies while playing big chords like the major9, 11th, major7 and etc?
Hello brother i am from Indonesia 🇮🇩
Hi Simon! What's the process in joining your school, need a private lesson
Sounds a lot like Rob Araujo. Nice! I dig it.
Rob’s the man!
Do u have a compilation or playlist of ur own music.. Or jam sesions... Even if short like this one... I would love to have it play as soon as i wakeup to be in a good mood right away
Check out my insta page, I always post beats and improv stuff: instagram.com/piano_pig/
Simon!!! Can I adopt you?
examples are too fire 🥵🥵
Thanks man!
Great video as usual🔥
Quick question, aren’t these Cm7/9 and Fm7/9 though? 1:38
Yes they are! We tend to just label things as 7th chords in jazz, even though we normally add more extensions!
@@Piano_Pig Ahhh I see. I guess it would make things simpler. Thanks
I came upon some famous jazz music. I tried to make out the minor chords, voicing in the faded background with my untrained senses. But, the main instruments were trumpet, saxophone, etc. So, even they're nice pieces, unfortunately the voicing , beautiful chords stay in the background. I happened to find out because of your videos.
As a fan of just about anything chromatic I like this example and think I have something else to add to it so off for my piano now.
I love thr EP sounds you get.
How is the first chord a C Minor?
1:19
Lookin handsome with the short hair Simon👌🏻
So handsome in fact
Is having an absolute pitch a must for a good jazz musician?
I mean it helps, but no not really.
Absolutely not! It’s all about relative pitch, which comes with practice. Having perfect pitch is irrelevant
"Ngulube" that's pic in my language Zulu...
I miss this channel bro
No need to miss the channel, I’m out here posting videos on the reg! 😁
What's the Wurli plugin used in the video ?
I’m using Keyscape 🙂
🎼🎶🎵🆗🆒✅
Finally reduced your hair.
😊😊😊🎹
I think people can be creative. There are just a few rules to follow. If I play the wrong notes, most listeners won't be able to tell anyway.
I have 1 year learning the piano but l still don't know anything
Cm7 doesn't have an A note in it and Fm7 doesn't have a Bb note. So what are these chords? This video is very confusing - and I've been playng keyboards for over 60 years.
You have a D in your Cm7, making it Cm9. Likewise, your Fm7 has a G, for Fm9. Why are you lying in this video; asking for a friend?
Nice stuff, but you did way more stuff that weren't explained like those voicing @2:34 that in fact sounded very good
