In disc golf ,I had a tie breaker to settle the winner of a tournament, that being 1 throw each from an agreed distance, closest to basket given the win. The tournament director flipped a coin. My opponent won the toss, elected to throw first. I was delighted at that because I knew if he threw a poor one I could easily beat him with a slightly better shot. That happened and I won the event It was a mistake for 49ers to to receive but the ref erred by not giving the exact details.

You obviously don't know the rule either. They Changed the rule. What you're talking about doesn't apply anymore. In some ways Mahomes and Reid may feel there was poetic justice that the Chiefs won the Super Bowl with the opposition not knowing the new overtime rules.
When Brady beat Mahomes in the AFC Championships in overtime and Mahomes didn’t get an opportunity to get the ball, nobody cared; they didn’t change the rule. When Mahomes defeated Josh Allen in the Divisional game and Josh didn’t get an opportunity to get the ball in overtime suddenly they cared and changed the rule. So when Shannahan gets the opportunity in the Super Bowl clearly not knowing the overtime rule, Mahomes and Reid were chuckling to themselves on the sideline thinking, “finally redemption!”@@prolific1518

Listen to the Raven's interviews before the AAFCG and the 49ers interviews before SB LVIII. They sound identical. Then listen to the Chiefs in the interviews answering those questions. That difference in mindset is why KC is having a parade tomorrow. It's like the driver that looks at the front of his hood driving down the road vs the one looking half a mile ahead.
Only thing I don't like is the "three-peat" talk. Just keep it to, "we have more to do." Because not getting to a 3-peat might be deemed a failure or be demoralizing. More to accomplish allows you many avenues to further and greater success without limiting it to "this one goal."

The regular season OT rule had been the same for a few years now (since 2010ish) - only change from 2022 was the Playoff OT both teams possess the ball regardless if the other scores a TD first. Score a TD first game over, score a field goal other team gets a chance to score, then from there if they don't score a td and get a FG then next score wins. A FG never won the game unless you got the ball and didn't score first. Coaches should've iterated the rules, during the OT break OR during the entire playoff period. BUT STILL ALL THE PLAYERS HAVE BEEN PLAYING LONG ENOUGH TO KNOW THE OT RULES - especially that you can't win on simply getting the ball first and scoring a FG. So I don't understand where the confusing or not knowing came from when it's been the same since 2010 except the 2022 Playoff OT rule change which doesn't change anything especially if you only score a FG first.

Richard it used to be first to score wins in OT during the playoffs, then it was changed to 1st to score a TD, and now to each possess the ball for at least 1 possession and then if both scores 1st to score again wins.

And that extra down is so crucial I'd rather know what I have to do with 4 downs!!!!

This is like if Donovan McNabb was a head coach not knowing a game could end in a tie.

In the good ol days, it was true sudden death OT. First team to score wins (field goal, TD, return or safety). That got changed to allowing both teams a possession, unless a TD was scored on that first possession.

This wouldn't even be a problem if they scored a touchdown. When it came down to crunch time they got out played.

I must admit as a fan, I wasn’t aware of the rule either. But coaches and players of NFL playoff teams must be aware of it and there is no excuse if you are not.

This is ALL on the captain who went out to call heads or tails
If he was listening, rather than focused on only tails never fails, then he would've brought that info back to coach for a reminder!
The Ref clearly explained it, and was the first time I knew a first possession TD did not end the game!

Its Kyle in the SB. Period. Doesn't use his best guy (CMCI), botches double digit lead (again), and so on and so on.
He just isn't a SB coach.

i think that shanahan and the playrs should have plans for every eventuality. its staggering that a rule that has been in around 2 yrs was not in their heads . 49ers seemed unprepared for ot

I been hearing and reading about the rules in OT in the Playoffs so what does it matter you both get the ball to score each team gets a chance to score

It's a big advantage to have the ball second, because you know what you need or don't need to do (go for 4th down, etc).

What’s crazy is that if they knew they 100% would NOT have received. If I have the lesser QB I want four downs and know how much I need to win. I want to force them to go for two and increase their difficulty not my own. I’m not giving Mahomes the knowledge and ability to have four plays to get what he knows he needs to get. Shameful

I think everyone was aware of the rule change because the Mahomes-Allen game was so high profile with the back and forth, and the miraculous comeback KC pulled off having a 13 second drive to tie. I would guess they were unaware that the game would've continued at triple zeroes, even if they had a lead. We even talked about that during the viewing party, since no one seemed to know for sure. All was moot because they scored a TD.
