I would disagree with the notion that Israel is too small to exist on its own. The only reason they needed support in the past and to an extent still do, is because they've been constantly under attack for the better part of 70 years. If they weren't in this situation they'd be just fine.

In the 1967 Six Day War, Israel got NO support from the West.
