Watch “The Earthing Movie: The Remarkable Science of Grounding”
    • The Earthing Movie: Th...
In this video, I spent one week fully barefoot in nature to try out “earthing.” Earthing or grounding is simply the practice of placing your bare feet or bare skin on the earth/ground to receive healing and anti-inflammatory benefits. Earthing has become a particularly popular wellness/holistic health trend amongst the hippie community within the past few years.
For my week-long barefoot challenge, it was super important to me to be in an environment fully immersed in nature. And what better time to do this than when I was in the middle of the mountains in Costa Rica completing a 5-day water fast? Definitely, the perfect time to do this earthing experiment.
In this video, I share my experience trying “earthing” for one week and what it was like to be fully barefoot and immersed in nature. I also breakdown some of the science and research we have on earthing/grounding thus far.

I remember my first psilocybin trip, I was in a public place but suddenly the idea of having some object disconnecting my feet from the earth, seemed so strange. So even though in public I put off my shoes. Now I hear that voice more clearly when I’m in a park for example, and I listen to it, and put off my shoes. I can immediately sense a flow of energy from my feet.

My feet have got a good layer of skin over them. I have been bare foot of 15 years. I can’t stand shoes they are so uncomfortable. I carry a pair of Sandles in my car for times when I need to have something on my feet like going into shopping Centres ect. Or out to eat. When I go out with my daughter the first thing she asks is have you got shoes. Yes I take my sandles and only put them on when I enter buildings where shoes are a must and can’t wait to get out so I can take them off.

It's crazy how I'm only now learning about earthing. When I was 13 I would walk around my garden at night barefoot, especially in the winter, and when my mom found out she told me to stop so I would exit the door with shoes on and then remove them and hide them in a Bush, then do my walk, then put them back on before re entering the house.
In my teenage years I worked at a camping and suffered from great emotional loss, and my instincts called me to go walk on this trail near my tent. It felt uncomfortable, until I realized I wanted to take my shoes off. So I did and it helped me heal so much, I'd go and walk this trail barefoot everyday for a few weeks.
Fast forward to when I was a student in Phoenix, I was known for walking barefoot everywhere. I took the bus barefoot, went to class barefoot, went shopping barefoot, studied in the library barefoot, explored campus barefoot.. I'd always have a pair of flip flops in my bag for when I would go to the cafeteria, the only place where I'd wear shoes. Literally, some of my teachers were so shocked when I would come in class with shoes on because I'd had an interview or outside event later on. I had completely forgotten about that and this video kindly reminded me that I felt so much better without shoes. Thank you sky

I used to go bare foot as a teenager as a way of being rebellious without doing much damage. I got some real hatred and suspicion from adults, I think because it's associated with poverty and poor people are threatening to some, often parents but their little kids were fascinated.

"It's become almost second nature..." No Sky, you're just remembering what is already your nature!
I am so grateful to have had parents who let me play in the woods barefoot as a child. I know tons of people who weren't even allowed out of the house without shoes. I have hobbit feet. Wide and sturdy. Which used to bother me, especially since it made finding comfortable shoes difficult, but now I recognize that my feet are strong and as feet are meant to be. They grew climbing trees and exploring the woods and racing down our dirt road. For the past few years, when I do wear shoes, I wear flat, barefoot styles almost exclusively. "Normal" shoes hurt my feet and I can feel the way they change my posture.
A note on having to look down: over time you develop a sense for walking safely. Your intuition will tell you where to step and your feet will avoid them without you having to worry about it. Or to be more sciency, I reckon over time your brain learns to recognize hazards with the briefest glance and responds accordingly. I actually used to marvel at that as a kid, that I could run down the road and somehow know just where to step to avoid the pointy rocks.

I spend almost all of my time in operating rooms, standing on hard floors and by the end of the day, my feet and ankles are in so much pain. When I am at home, I spend most of my time with nature and putting my hands in the dirt. Little did I think to let my painful feet connect to the earth and heal. Wow, what an amazing journey! Thanks for sharing. I confess to being a little sceptical about the science of earthing, but I am convinced of the numerous health benefits of spending as much time as possible barefoot. And I certainly relate to your craving about wanting to be barefoot in nature. I live predominantly barefoot and if I am in shoes I too crave being barefoot, especially when I'm in a natural environment like a forest. As you suggest, it just makes sense 😃🐾👍

Tobacco is actually one of the sacred medicines in a couple indigenous tribes but the crap that they mix in cigarettes is what causes alot of the harm, also too much of a good thing is bad too. Like straight tobacco leaves applied to wounds is an amazing medicine.

Those avocado earrings are amazing! Also, love the video! I used to have my daughter and I walk barefoot as often as possible after seeing the documentary. Now that we live in an area where the ground has lots of things that could hurt us (fire ants, stickers, other stinging insects) it’s been hard. I got a grounding mat for my bed to help with this.

This is cool. As you might know, walking barefoot used to be very popular, esp among females in outback communities in farming plantations. Dust tracks were well trodden. I have been passed this information down by my own mother and her mother previously. Nice video, good advice. 👍

Way to go Sky, this was really well put together! I absolutely love the health benefits of earthing 🌍 🌏 🌎 I live up north in Canada & my Yogi friend/teacher introduced me to Earthing. Gave me the book to read, & I have not yet watched the documentary but I would like to 😃 I use a grounding mat when @ my standing desk + 1 for sleep. When I do wear shoes I like to wear five-finger style toe shoes & I just got an awesome pair that I put a grounding sticky strip on, connecting the grounding connection from under the sole of the shoe to the inside where my bare feet are haha it’s quite nice. Looking forward to running on the beach barefoot, I should be doing lots more of that since the beach is totally walking/biking distance from home 🏡

He’s a very interesting guy with so much more wisdom and knowledge than just on the foot/ankle. He taught me about the 4 bodies we have (archetypal awakening). Did he teach you about that too?

  • @makaylasmanifestations

i really loved this video. for one itmade me feel (not crazy bc i havent seen earthing or heard much abt the science but i have enjoyed walking barefoot more than ever the past year, this made me so happy & emotional, lol i just wanted to share and i love what youre doing being real & experimenting w all these cool ass things that we are so disconnected from as a society. i agree its annoying to look down all the time too.i fucking love how you share and express the connection you feel w nature and how important it is and common sense, i feel it too and to hear you say it in this form is inspiring and comforting and eye opening to hear another perspective. love how ur mindset changed from the start to end hahah!!
