Badfinger - Day After Day (1971)

- Note: Click "Show More" for lyrics. "Day After Day" is a song recorded by the rock/pop band Badfinger for inclusion on their 1971 album, Straight Up.
The song was written and sung by Pete Ham and produced by George Harrison, who plays some of the slide guitar parts of the song along with Ham. The record also features Leon Russell on piano. As the song was unfinished at the time Harrison left the Badfinger album to produce the Concert for Bangladesh, the final mix was done by Todd Rundgren, who took over Straight Up after Harrison's departure.
Released as a single in the U.S. in November 1971 (January 1972 elsewhere), it would become the group's highest charting single there, peaking at #4 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. It also peaked at #10 on the UK Singles Chart in January 1972. It remains the band's best-known song, most notably for the slide guitar solos. It went Gold in March 1972, becoming the band's first and only gold single. The single reached #10 on Billboard's Easy Listening survey.
Because of all of the overdubs, Badfinger was hesitant to play this song live for years, since it was impossible for a four-piece group to reproduce the single production. However, the song was included in the setlist for Badfinger's 1974 tour.
Lyrics:
Day After Day (Ham/Evans/Molland)
I remember finding out about you
Every day, my mind is all around you
Looking out from my lonely room, day after day
Bring it home, baby, make it soon
I give my love to you
I remember holding you while you sleep
Every day, I feel the tears that you weep
Looking out of my lonely gloom, day after day
Bring it home, baby, make it soon
I give my love to you
[dual slide guitar solo (Pete Ham and George Harrison)]
Looking out of my lonely room, day after day
Bring it home, baby, make it soon
I give my love to you
I remember finding out about you
Every day, my mind is all around you
Looking out of my lonely gloom, day after day
Bring it home, baby, make it soon
I give my love to you...

They were to be the next Beatles but after five years they were destitute. Ripped off by an unscrupulous manager. Damn…. I remember waking up to this song when I was a freshman in high school 1974 and it made me yearn for somebody that would appreciate me for who I was…. This song was magical to me. Such a lovely melody and a beautiful voice that sang out to my soul… unfortunately at the time it did not help me in my depressive state but it has lived within my body for over 45+ years and brings smiles and tears to my eyes. These men were destined for greatness, but for a very sleazy manager named Polley, who is finally rotting in hell. It is such a shame. They were extremely close and Pete Ham's death by suicide eventually caused his best buddy's(Tom Evans) suicide. They should have been a top ten all time group. Sad!

I noticed that "Baby Blue" attracted a lot of attention when it was used as the theme song of the final episode of "Breaking Bad" a few years ago. I wonder how many young people who never knew anything about Badfinger ended up becoming fans of the group after hearing that song on "Breaking Bad"? My guess is a lot of people heard it for the first time.
Badfinger, in 1971, had scheduled a tour of the U.S. before they became really big. They were playing a lot of cowtowns and small colleges all over the country. Around Christmas, their album "Straight Up" was released in the U.S., and overnight they achieved superstar status. To their credit, they honored all of their commitments, and continued their scheduled tour. Two months later, In February of 1972, a friend of mine and I were visiting a couple of girls who were attending a podunk college in a hick town in the middle of nowhere, Pennsylvania. By coincidence, Badfinger was still on that tour and scheduled to play there. We picked up 4 student tix with no problem, and saw them in concert at the college field house!

@@toddblanks Unfortunately, moonage daydream the answer is yes. Lennon took much B.S. at the time for suggesting things like this but it was true and someone needed to live through the 60's to experience how true it actually was. I sincerely believe Lennon was suggesting they should not have been as popular as Jesus, but they were and the 60's generation were looking elsewhere through music, lyrics and drugs to show them the way.
the best era of music in my opinion
Hearing George Harrison's slide guitar makes me smile & happy about life. Bittersweet because hes not around to share in his art he left behind. Its peope like him, Bowie, & the Beatles as a whole that remind me that music isnt just a career to make money but its a cultural way of life, healing, & expressing the light of love we all should be practicing w/ each other in some healthy form.
It adds more color to the limited color spectrum we abide within...it gives life a soundtrack & advances our ability to communicate w/ each other even across time. A song you make today might be the reason somebody decides to live & do right by God in the distant tomorrow. Crazy how good pleasant sounds can make even a gloomy person feel.
Music is an essential part of fully functional human life; dont let the modern mainstream trash ruin that for the generations to come. Make music great again...all my new music is always old music I never knew existed. Dont let basic people make you not believe in your sincere well thought out art. Believe in your art & dont forget to share it w/ the world...the people who matter will likely find it in time & those who dont who love you will wish they had.

Wow!
Such an amazing song .. from a place of sadness, loneliness, and feeling a void, to excitement, waiting, and finally unconditional love. It actually took me a while to really understand the songs meaning, since it certainly is emitted through the sometimes subtle changes in play throughout. At first he is all alone and finds out he is expecting his child and waiting anxiously; in the next verse he reminisces holding his baby (likely daughter) and caring for her, and connecting with her, and alludes to how he longs to see his now older daughter each day, lifting his spirits from the 'gloomy' life he leads and how she has 'become' his life. It certainly makes me reflect on my daughter and the joy she has brought me, and continues to bring me, each and every day. Such a well-written and powerful song, so few words but conveys so much.
Thank you for that, it really clears up a lot of stuff.😮😢😂😊

Now I know who you exactly are! And I got 39 calls and text messages and 13 voice messages from your phone yesterday 12 video call messages from you 2 night's ago! What do you want? This is Fred! What's going on hear? Yes?
Yep
I think this is one of the prettiest songs. it is my ring tone for my husband.
How lovely!
Leon Russell on Piano on this cut!
They had a tragic career, but they put out some memorable songs. Still listening in September 2020.
It's September 2021 I'm still listening!
One of the most beautiful songs ever written and one of the best bands to have ever graced us with their outstanding talent 🙏🏼 I will never forget them 🙏🏼
Among the greatest songs ever written and recorded, this song is absolute perfection. It is a total eargasm from start to finish. Like fine wine, it has only aged better over the decades, and - seriously - how many songs can you really say that about? 💖💙💚💛💜🖤
Too fucking right Bob.
all the songs they have now, come and go,none of them have any special meaning anymore
beautifully written. i totally concur.
Sad to say this type of music will NEVER be made again. Just glad we have all the great old stuff to listen to forever....
Love it Bob x
This song is a true masterpiece !!! Pure perfection !!!
2020 anyone?❤️
Me
Me too
Yes me classic
Yes. Sometimes seems like every day after day.
Yep. Early in the morning.
Love Badfinger Pete and Tom wrote the killer song of the century Without you, I still listen to them. This music defines what legends are!
This is (to me) a perfect song. Not one unappreciated note or lyric, and I don't tire of multiple listens.
Pete Moss so true!
I must've played it twenty times. So sweet music!
The early 70s brought out such good music and this one by Badfinger Was One Of The Best.
I was 11 when this came out. Loved it immediately & it still gives me chills at 58. So beautiful.
Judy Bou I was 5 and my older cousins played this. Love it.
1959 was an exquisite year for wine and people. :)
Judy Judy Judy Im with ya all the way
I just rediscovered this song after decades...I was around 6 or 7 when it came out, loved it then and it's amazing to hear it again after all this time.
Judy I feel the same way exactly. I'm the same age as you. Day After Day is in my top 10 of all time favorite songs. Peter Ham lives on through his music.
Thanks to Godzilla and Kong, I found out about this gem of a song, even when this was made when I was just an infant.
I saw Badfinger in the early 70's, they did a concert at Gloucester High School in Mass.-it was awesome. The Grassroots also did a concert at out high school!
No matter what decade you grew up in, the music of your day will always be the most special. You hear a masterpiece like this and as you get older, it reminds you of wherever you may have been back then when you first heard it. You could be 10 yrs old in a muscle car cruising along with your uncle as his FM/AM radio plays, or sitting on a hilltop with your parents on a picnic as the AM/FM car radio plays from a distance.
exactly yammer! nice bike btw have a few of my own.
Brilliant, 8 years old growing up in England with my family...l
Maybe I'm different, but I don't associate old songs with old memories. or at least that's not my reason for liking a song. I consider nostalgia a form of mental illness.
I am sitting here listening to this song at Toyota of Bowie getting my vehicle serviced in Bowie, Maryland July 30, 2022. I was in the 11th grade when this song came out in 1972. I miss those days.😥😪
i heard 1975✌✌✌
@@lawrencewashington347 I was a kid...and I longed for my girl...heart was full of youthful dreaming
Song came out 7+ years before born and makes me feel nostalgic for a time before I was even alive. It's a very timeless song.
There is nothing wrong with that. The beauty of great music is that you can enjoy it forever.
Same!
Find a good soft pillow. Put on headphones, close your eyes, tak3e a sip of wine and let the mind transport you to a time when things were different.
It's timeless because it is an amazing song, written, and performed. The lyrics speak to any of us who know that feeling of expecting and finally having a child, the guitar work from George Harrison is unparalleled, the vocals speak to us as if he is speaking to his child and we feel as it were us not him. The song is put together and engineered so masterfully. Just Perfect.
Breaks my heart knowing what the band endured at the hands of that wicked, malicious corrupt manger of theirs, beautiful song, after all these years it a timeless classic. ❤️
Love badfinger so much, this is not only thier best song, but my favourite song of the 70s, amazing decade throughout, but this one really does it 4 me, classic, dave in London x
It's such a bittersweet video and song to watch and listen to. It's really a brilliant song for it's beauty in terms of the music and harmonies and not to mention the powerful, enchanting effect it has on you as a listener. When you watch Pete and Tom walk across the countryside together as the song plays it can definitely make you tear up.
George on the Slide Guitar and all the different drum fills on this song are so crazy good!👍
And Leon Russell on the piano. I read that he only played this song, once, in the recording studio at the time of recording this massive hit.
Badfinger wrote the soundtrack to my childhood. Flying just below the radar in the early seventies , you just kept hearing great new songs on the radio and wondered "Who was THAT?" If ever a band deserved a biopic, the rise, the triumph, the tragedy, it's this one.
I would like to see someone like Martin Scorsese do it and for the life of me, I don't understand why this has not been made into a movie.
This just popped into my head out of nowhere. I immediately googled it and praise God for CZcams and it's wonderful contributors, found it straightaway! I was fourteen when this came out and it's as beautiful today as it was then. The 70's - when the music produced would last for a lifetime and longer!
This has nothing to do with salvation so why praise God? Eternity will be about praising and worshiping Jesus Christ who died on a cross to save us from our sins. It will not be about any of us sinners. We all deserve hell.
Me too Lorraine
These guys died so young ...... They were ahead of time and didn't know it . RIP
Yeah badfinger I love this bad
Archie Ferrarini true
they knew it....just screwed over in business dealings..what talent
Joey Molland original member is still alive and still plays with Badfinger
Such an exquisitely beautiful song. Can't remember a time in my 53 years when this song was not beloved by me and deep in my heart. God bless such beautiful artists, who are conduits of God's love and light, and so frequently suffer by virtue of their beautiful sensitivities. I am aware that 2 of the 4 band members were driven by despair and took their own lives. RIP 🙏💗😔.
Beautiful song. And tragic history for Badfinger. I love their music no matter what.
Love this to the max but still hurting for Pete to this day. Thanks for the music, rest in eternal peace. 💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹💐🌹.
I was born in 73, so I didn't hear this until later after it was released. One of my fave songs, one of my fave bands. Got into a deep mood of nostalgia and memories this Sunday night sitting here by myself. I'm still on fire for love that slipped away over my life. Gee, now that sounds lonesome tonight..lol. Keep rockin'..love y'all.
Heard the song hundreds of times not realizing Leon Russell played piano brilliantly on this masterpiece.
I feel so sad for all the people who missed out on 1970's FM radio music !!! Before the business thieves genrufied it !
+virgil kane I feel bad for those of us who knows music has no barriers and are no forced to listen to the bullshit on the airwaves.
+virgil kane AM AND FM. The top 40 Bill board hits. Bubble Gum Rock. Man, remember that.
+Statimtek 1970's FM and AM radio was the best ! Radio changed for the worst in 1980 .
Ain't that the truth!
+virgil kane
WLS AM
I wonder what great songs we were deprived of because of the tragedy of Badfinger?
Uffff
Don't make mecry
Sad, but interesting comment
What?? Did not know this. Not acceptable considering i grew up in 60s & 70s. What a devastating loss for us.
TOO many : (
I loved this in 1972 when I bought it, and thankfully I still have the 45, and it still thrills me. Such a great band.
I miss the 70's. I graduated from high school in 1973.
Such a great band 2023 I’m 51 years old and still listening
