1:30 If you can’t keep up with ads, that’s a good thing, cause that means you don’t need any of the things advertised in there. Really, you are not missing out on anything!!! Stop looking for deals and just buy what you need, when you need ✨

When I decluttered my attic, I finally realized what an unhealthy relationship I have with paper. There were financial statements from the '90s and all kinds of stupid stuff up there. To prevent that going forward, I've been retrieving the mail once a week and dealing with it all on that day. I no longer get a newspaper, so I don't have flyers or clippings. The less access I have to temptation, the better. It's difficult to break bad habits, but it can be done.

Have years of taxes properly filed receipts. I plan to go through them all and only keep the receipts that deal with my 12 year old car, etc.

    @nenemaria-cornfieldsgarden Před 3 lety +90

In case you didn't know, receipts can't be put in paper recycling, they need to go in the trash. The thermal paper is coated in BPA (which is how the 'ink' shows up) so it contaminates all the paper recycling. It's something we don't get told to avoid (I don't know why) but it can ruin a whole batch of recycling.
It's frustrating as we end up with so many of them which just get thrown away. Some shops here ask if you want it before it's printed or offer email copies instead which is a good step forward. Just thought you might like to know (if you didn't already, of course) as I know you've been trying to be more environmentally conscious.

In Europe that are now phasing out this type of paper - they literally print „I can be put in the recycling“ on the back

@@CoquetFleur that's great to hear, the UK is also included in the BPA ban but ive not seen anything about the alternatives being recyclable (it's not printed on receipts), I'll have to do some more research.
I've not shopped anywhere but the supermarket for the last year so it's not something I've thought much about but we run a business (that's been closed since March 20) and end up with masses of receipts in our accounts so I'll be keeping an eye on it when we eventually get back to work!

Good job! Just a suggestion...DON'T use an incoming mail basket. It automatically becomes a dumping ground that will get filled up. Deal with your mail as soon as you bring it into the house...bills in bill box, trash/recycle, shred, time will tell. I have successfully kept my counter clear of mail clutter for a few years now.

At the beginning on 2020 I gathered ALL the paper clutter in our home it was massive. I had 5 full bankers boxes, 1 full laundry basket , 1 small wicker basket and 2 portable file folders. I was so good when I first started and got through the 5 bankers boxes but then hit a wall. I picked it back up this month. I went through the large laundry basket and now I am down to just the wicker basket and the 2 file folders. I have been watching video's on the Sunday Box and when I finish my initial sort I am going to come up with a simple filing system and start using a Sunday Box. I NEVER want to deal with large amounts of paper clutter ever again! :)

We throw away all sale ads and junk mail as we walk into the house. The bills get put in the 'to pay' location. Before we do anything else - still carrying my handbag, lol - junk into recycling and bills in their home. Anything unusual goes onto my end table to see what it is that night. I had to tell myself that I am not bringing anything new into the house, so it doesn't matter what is in the sale ad. If I need to buy something, I go online to my local stores and look up the prices. I swear this saves me money in the long run, because the volume of things I am buying has greatly reduced in the past few years. So it just doesn't matter if I could have saved $3, I probably would have bought something else by going into the store.

I am such a hoarder! My problem is I have so many hobbies that everything I see (from paper bags, to broken jewelry to wrapping paper to ribbons and so on) is a potential piece of art or scrapbook project, etc. I’ve decided to try and limit myself to one box or one drawer for these items. It’s a daunting task to sort all of this stuff. To top it off, in the span of 3 years, I moved out of my old job, my brother died and we had to clear out my sister’s house (he was an extreme hoarder like the ones on the TV show! My hoarding looks more like what you showed in this video), my mom got sick and we had to move her out of her apartment and then my sister and my mom moved to a new house and my basement flooded! During all of this many items accumulated and were shifted all over the house. Now my whole house is a huge mess!! Not only did I accumulate items during these moves but I have not spent time working at my own house because I was spending so much time helping my sister and Mom. I try to tackle small piles at a time. Also I injured my knee and couldn’t do much during that time! Ughhhhh I need help lol. I hope your channel can help me! New subbie! TYFS ❤️🦋💜

It’s not my nature, but it has made it MUCH easier.

Paper clutter is a hot topic in our house! I used to hoard my papers and when I finally decided to combat this issue I had 30ish pounds of paperwork to shred. Knowing myself as I do I knew I wasn't going to take the time to shred it all so I took it all to Staples and they shredded it for me. Yes, it cost money but it was worth it. Since then I have invested in a privacy/security stamp so I can just recycle it. I open the bills as they come in daily, throw away the envelope and advertising, and right then and there I stamp my private information. This has been a game changer! I have been able to keep up with the bills and other paperwork for 3 years now.

    • @SGast
      @SGast Před 3 lety +7

@@ahoardersheart In this case it is better to have control over when money is withdrawn. I have a cushion in my checking account which is about one paycheck as it means I never have to worry about overdraft fees, an unexpectedly high utility bill or having forgotten to transfer money from savings. This is especially important for me as my income can be quite irregular. Knowing there is always x amount of money in the account takes a way a lot of stress for me. However, in the beginning I had to be mindful about it having a purpose where it was and not spending it.
Over time I just started building all these little safety nets for myself - the cushion, the sinking funds, the emergency fund, long-term savings and it really helps me feel secure that I have contingencies for the small and big things that might happen in my daily life.
Having a cushion and setting up direct deposit might be something you can consider when you are out of babystep 3 but as long as your system works for you there really is no real reason to change it.

I still get paper bills (with the idea that my husband would see them if anything ever happened to me). But I pay them online out of my checking account. I set up a payment address for everybody that I pay, and then set up an automatic payment for the minimum each month, on the date that I choose. This way, I never miss the minimum payment. But when the paper bill comes, I change the amount to the full payment amount, and double-check the date. The advantage is that I can see all my payables listed by the time they are going to get paid, right there online in my checking account.

    • @Mystical244

@@ahoardersheart I agree with you, I don't like automatic payments deducted from my bank account. But I do pay my bills on line and I do it once a month. Even if the bill isn't due for another 2 weeks I still pay all of them at the same time on the 3rd of every month. I printed out an excel sheet that has one column that I check mark once I pay the bill on line and another column that I check mark a few days later to make sure that it cleared in my bank. Once both columns are all checkmarked then I know I've paid every bill for the month and everything has cleared in my bank. I find this system better than automatic payments because what if you are short one month, automatic payment would not be good for that circumstance.

You should hang that receipt binder by your front door! That way when you come in from shopping you can immediately put it in the binder and then if you need to return something you can pull the receipt before you leave the house. Then once the year is over you can recycle the contents!
Also, you might want to think about setting up automatic payments online. All of my bills are automatic, I don’t need to think about them as on their designated days they come out of my account and I get an email about it!
    Hope this helps!

I don't know what it's like in the USA, but in Canada, if we put up a sign that says "no unaddressed mail wanted" (google image it for cute signs), they are not allowed to drop off the junk. It saves so much time and energy not having to sort through all the crap. Or maybe there is a no junk mail registry or something?
Another trick is to treat the mail like it's own chore. If you're getting the mail, it is mail getting time (i.e., you sort/open it immediately) - it doesn't necessarily mean you will do the action items right then and there (e.g., paying a bill), but that you are simply going to deal with the physical papers right away. I have a recycling bin right beside the door where the mail comes in so I can put stuff directly into it straight from the box. Maybe this could be hubby's chore?

Is there a way in the US for you to opt out of commercials? I’d really recommend that.. as a minimalist I don’t want to have to spend my precious time going through junk mail. We only get about one thing in our mailbox a week. Also, how about automated billing? That way you won’t have to remember to pay your bills = less for you to think/worry about.

Is there a way to reduce the number of newspaper/flyers that come into the house? How often do you really use those flyers (especially with no spend) and could you reduce bringing those in, less coming in = less to sort through. Also with receipts, check the date that you can return, if it’s past the time when you can return the item (30 days for example) toss the receipt. The only paper that should be coming into the house is bills/documents and kids school work. Stop the flow at the source so you don’t spend energy organizing and dealing with it at all.❤️❤️❤️

A Hoarder's Heart totally get it!! For those important big purchases I used to staple the receipt to the instructions or the manual to calm the anxiety of it. Anything else, like food or small stuff, no need to keep that receipt, if you need to see the transaction always know it’s on your bank statement (unless you used cash) and reframe it, what makes you anxious about throwing out the receipt and work on that. You are doing such an amazing job!

My paper was out of control until I said I'd had enough. Now I look at mail when it comes in just in case it is emergent. Once a week I completely go through everything and shred anything that has my name on it. I pay most of my bills online, so less paper there. I am a bit careful with autopay as I feel that I might become lazy with checking the charges. I have a checklist of all of my bills, which aren't many as we carry no debt except for the mortgage, and make sure that I check them off every month so that I don't forget any of them. It has worked nicely for us.

Hello Ms Heart! I personally keep receipts in a reverse file system - the moment it gets in, I decide how long it should be kept and then put it in the folder for that time. For example I have a little folder thing for receipts that can be thrown out in january 2022 - And once the day comes it is suddenly so much faster to go through.. Coupons are not quite as big a thing in europe... so i sadly have nothing i could say to that, that noone else said already - and that would be keep a paper recycling bin around. Mine is actually next to the entrance and i just throw whatever i don't need in there at once.

When I went through my paperwork, I had a bag sitting next to me for recycling and a bag for shredding. I only shredded paperwork that had my name or personal information on it. I must have had a dozen large shopping bags full of papers to shred. I was able to go to a local free shred Day to get my first batch of paperwork shredded. Later when I got more shredded I took it to a shred place and paid them 50 bucks. It was money well spent. I was so excited that when I finished, all of my paperwork fit in a file box only 8 inches deep, and all of my parents’ paperwork fit in the same size file box.

I have every document I have ever gotten in paper, since 2001 with a few before. Multiple jobs, paper pay stubs, in one job I regularly rented a cargo van as a broker courier. I had an encyclopedia stack of van rental invoices, 3 papers each. I have every rent receipt I ever got, except maybe 10 mixed into this 100lbs of paper I am sorting through and shredding. Monthly bank and credit card invoices. I found and kept my first paystub from a job I started in 2001 and spent more time at than any other job. I had to shred a few printed pictures of girlfriends. I felt bad, but I have them digitally somewhere. I have so much paper from the last 23 years, when I grab a random stack to sort, it's like an archeological dig. It's like looking at layers of sediment to determine when the asteroid hit and when the volcano blew up. I grab a stack to shred and it's like I find all Dynamex paper, and not far away my employee tag, and I'm like uh..... here we go.... what a mess. Heartbroken. There's some hand written emo babble sad ah it a chick. Talking about stitches and working from 7:30 - 3:30. I know I have everything because I would not just discard this type of thing. I throw it into a garbage bag or a duffle bag, so I know I probably have every rental receipt except maybe 10 - 15 for one reason or another. It's astounding.
I'm sorting and shredding. I'm tired of having it. Ugly waste of space. I love discarding worthless garbage that takes up space. Like the coat closet. Just throw everything in the garbage. Most of it IS garbage, it's like the paper. Worthless and needs to go. Decluttering.

If you go through the basement paper hoard and find a lot that needs to be shredded, it might be helpful to take it to some place like Staples and pay them to shred it. They weigh it and you can put it into the lock box yourself for future shredding. This really helped my sister when she was faced with paper documents when she was moving, and me too. Then I use my little home shredder just to keep up with the weekly stuff, once the bulk of the mess was gone. Otherwise, it's just too overwhelming and time consuming (not to mention making the home shredder overheat!).

I would say you wouldn't believe how much paper clutter I used to have, but actually you could probably relate lol. I would pull boxes and boxes out of my mom's basement or financial papers, academic papers, receipts, everything. I have paychecks from working at CVS in high school. One big issue was that both my parents kept tons of paperwork of mine from school and work :-| so I had to sort all of it. It was great to sit with a shredder and and paper bag and I actually bought myself a feed through style scanner for things I wanted to keep digitally. Through the process, the amount of work I was doing would often convince me that a document wasn't even worth scanning and giving a file name and someday finding again, and it would be shredded on the spot. Nowadays, iPhone has a pdf scanner in the notes app that uses your camera, if necessary, and I personally tend to take coupons and magnet them to the fridge so I don't forget I have them. I rejoice when the expiration date arrived and I can throw them out haha. Great job! Getting rid of paper clutter is awesome

It helps keep me on track because I don't have to separate files and have the excuse not to deal with things. I find I rarely needed those things anyway and after a few years I just throw away the whole folder without looking at it.
I keep my really important things like medical, cars, and ID's categorized normally in a separate drawer. But those things I rarely take out of the file so I almost never have to deal with them.

I love your bill organizer something I used to do was write the due date on the front of an envelope that it came and then I would take a pin and stick it in a cork board in the one spare room At whatever house we were in I got away from that after we had kids and only ended up having one income. Now I do paying bills usually twice a month. But having that visual system definitely worked very well for me. Currently I have that Dollar general "home finance bill organizer" I mentioned on another video. It works very well for me because it has where you can write down the due date and what not and check it off as you pay it. since I don't have a ton of bills I use the other side for confirmation numbers. And since it has a pocket I can just put the bills in whenever I get them from the mail so that I don't lose them in the meantime. Ideally. I want to be better about that this year. And hopefully stem the flow of paper coming in and then I'll be able to tackle the old stuff later.
