  • I am decluttering everything The Minimal Mom tells me to! I love the idea of Jumpstarting Minimalism in 2022. So when I saw
    The Minimal Mom Video: • 22 Things to Declutter...
    I couldn’t help but pull out my camera and follow her laid out plan. I wanted to use her list as a guideline to jumpstart my decluttering journey. I am hoping to be my own kind of minimalist. Everyone is different, but the idea of very low inventory intrigues me. I think I could be a much tidier person if I had less to manage.
    I also want to start posting more videos like this, I have a lot on my mind plate so simplifying my life and home as a stay at home mom would be amazing!!!
    Let me know if there is anything you would like to see on this channel! I love talking about all things mommy related! Love you all!

    You are so right…,just start. Now that I’ve started, I keep going back to areas and find myself ready to let go of even more. I love Dawn. Another withstood has helped me, is to ask “if we were moving would I want to take the effort to pack, unpack and find a place for this item?”

    • @Lindsay_Lexus
      @Lindsay_Lexus  Před 2 lety +1

      This is definitely a great way to look at it! There is way too much stuff, and I can always replace it if I really did need it. But likely I won’t need it!

      As a miltary family, that is how I think about our items. It does suck when we have to wait months for our household goods and I miss specific individual items on a daily basis.
      On the bright side I'm so happy as I unpack.

    Being a mum is hard. I have a 'mum' draw with cargo pants, white and grey t. Shirts and a few simple Hoodies. I would never wear that kind of stuff out with friends or to work but keeping busy with Benjamin and running after him all day it works. I so need to sort out my clothes and declutter though. 😍 Your videos. Xx

    I started my minimalism journey 18 months ago and you are right about the "layers". the more "layers" you declutter the easier it is to notice the things you don't use or need or that just clutter up your space.

    • @Lindsay_Lexus
      @Lindsay_Lexus  Před 2 lety

      Yeah and layers is the best when you aren’t confident. You start with the layer you know you will never use, leave it for a bit and come back for another layer.

    The new earrings look great. Regarding the konmari method, personally would never have chosen that one. I cannot see that many inanimate objects sparking joy, with the exception of a few sentimental items. I think I would feel rather silly thanking each one when I got rid of them too. 😁

    It cracks me up to see your adorable little boy run past or get into draws in the back ground while you're talking into camera. Also...funny fact...my son's name is Devon...so it takes a lot of mental energy for me not to imagine him when you talk about your husband and not to think of Dan as your husband's name. This was especially funny on one video where you looked in on Dan who was supposed to be sleeping and said, no, he's playing. In my mind, you were saying this about a grown man aka, your husband. lol. I'll eventually get it straight...maybe. I just came across your videos recently since I also watch, Dawn, the minimal mom, Cass, the Clutter-bug, and Danna the slob. JK, that's not her title, but you know who I mean. Love her! I've been playing your videos in the back ground today while I work. I think you're doing great! Keep going!!! I'm right there with you! Fellow de-clutterer and organization junky since 2000.

  • @jkp62
    @jkp62 Před 2 lety +3

    Starting is the first step. I will suggest that you start on ONE room in one corner (I start next to the door) and work your way around the room. Have clearly marked boxes (bins or trash bags) for donate, keep (this is for that room only), trash, and one each for mine, his, kids rooms (how many times have all of a family’s individual items end up in different rooms?). Allot yourself a certain time to be in that room, be it 15 minutes or 4 hours and then put the boxes, etc to the side of the clearest area, walk out and close the door (if that’s an option), then go back later that day or the next day and set a timer, and repeat until that room is finished with the declutter and reorganizing- then clean it and walk away. If there is a closet in that room, leave that for last and then clean well and organize it well (organize does not always mean Pinterest worthy bins or cubbies) with what you want to keep in it- no shoving stuff in there because you are at the end of your rope with that room. Then do a daily 5 minute walk through of that room and pick up and put away items as needed and clean once a week. Then move on to the next room and repeat. Do not allow things to build up in those newly cleaned and organized rooms, it should only take 5-10 minutes to do a quick pick up each day. It may take you a day or 2 weeks to finish a room and that is okay, as long as you don’t stall and go back to how it was first. And a hint about toys: I raised 4 children and have 12 grandchildren- and let me tell you that having every toy and developmental toy or book will not benefit your child anymore than having a few thoughtful toys, they will not miss them or have a real attachment because of the overwhelming amount of choices- watch Dan and see what he regularly gravitates to and then eliminate all the rest of the toys when he is not there to tug at your heartstrings when he pulls out an item from the donate box- it’s a toddler’s natural curiosity to loom what’s in there and pull stuff out and not truly play with it. I feel where you are at with your first child and sentimentality but you are overwhelmed at the amount of his toys and all the other items and you have to have a sense of peace and gratefulness when you walk around your house and look in rooms, and sometimes “all that stuff” does not create that feeling and sense of peace.

    You can do this. Awesome start ! Take black trash bag with you and donate box in every room and take it out when exiting. Less getting up and down and you get rid of trash and donate at same time. Don't worry so much about organizing /cleaning as you go so much at the beginning , just think donate or trash.

    Your video was recommended because I watch Dawn too! I started out with Mari Kondo which was to extreme for me. I’ve been making a habit of decluttering and fine tuning what I keep. It feels good to reach into my closet and know I can find something to wear. My clothes fit, no shirts with stains or holes or bad vibes. It isn’t perfect but it is progress. I don’t have littles like you do but I have tools and caulk and joint compound. I have clear tubs I keep that in. I organize it by drywall supplies, paint supplies, paints are in two wooden crates. I’m working on finishing the projects so I don’t have as much inventory on hand. None of it is perfect but it is contained at the moment. Good luck on your journey. I hope you find joy and success in all the little things you do along the way.

      Thanks for sharing, everyone has their own things going on in their lives. And doesn’t matter if we have kids or not, simplifying is absolutely necessary for survival.
      I’m going to be doing a closet clean out soon :) do you have any advice for me??

    • @shawna2boys716
      @shawna2boys716 Před 2 lety +1

      @@Lindsay_Lexus Do the easy stuff first. If you start a home for randomly placed tools when you find them put them in this spot. If you come across something that has a home take the time to put it away. Specific for closets 🤔 let go of guilt, give unwanted items away, put keepsakes in a bin for later decisions. During projects…I sometimes have a need to clean counters or things other ppl say don’t waste your time. For my sanity, it’s not a waste of time. If you hear nothing else remember this…YOU DO YOU. Your participation in your home, whatever and however you do it, will benefit your family. You’re doing a great job! One day this season will be a memory so allow it to be a good one. 🤗

She is Russian, with an accent. Super smart and thorough! She dives deep into a method of determining your body type using the Kibbe Method. I learned that I am a Soft Classic. I look best in simple clothing that is a medium weight knit. When I got rid of everything that doesn’t fit in that Soft Classic description, it made my wardrobe so simple! One step at a time and you can walk to China :-)! Not that you want to, but figuratively speaking…
    Speaking of China, I’m really glad you kept the little stuffed animal thing that the kid you were teaching English to give you… So cute! And I could imagine something like that being a decorative item later on that brings back really pleasant memories when you see it and a nice story starter or something, on a shelf somewhere in your home. You obviously have very good feelings about it and where you got it from etc. :-)

      I think it’s good to keep some sentimental things, but I know I can’t keep them all. I’m going to try to take pictures of the ones I can’t keep and display the ones I can.
      Things are things, but the memories are priceless :) I’m so glad I have the good memories and feelings, which is why it’s hard to let things go.
      I’m going to have to make another trip though my house though and declutter a WHOLE LOT MORE! Ha. What kind of things would you like to see? And do you have any advice I can always use some 😂

      @@Lindsay_Lexus Don’t worry about getting it done, we never get it done…! And that’s OK.
      Accept where you are as just that, where you are, a snapshot along your journey. 😀😊
      Another thing I appreciate that I’ve heard recently, I think from Dana K White, from A slob comes clean on CZcams. She recommends starting in any space by looking for trash first and foremost, which gets you into the space and looking at things but not making any difficult decisions. Just get anything which is obvious trash out. If you have to think about it, let it be. Then go back in and take out any thing that obviously belongs somewhere else or is really really obvious donation. So take the plates back to the kitchen or the kids’ toys to the kids room or whatever. Again, anything which needs more decision, just leave it. She has several steps like that, two or three, and then you start making decisions but she even there she stays away from a lot of emotion, has really good questions. I can recommend checking out her videos.
      Be easy on yourself and have fun with this! 😊🌷✨

    She's *tough* and really keeps few, but her house looks (+ feels!) great.
    Who I can also highly recommend is *BenitaLarson.* She's a Swede in Stockholm, and her perspective is quite different from the american and very interesting.
    She owns the fewest from all and has a very *aesthetical* but at the same time *practical* approach.

    Aren't you great! Love this video you let go of a lot of things I also love that you were keeping it easy for yourself and not doing the hard stuff. Also your baby's adorable I also have a crazy boy He's for now but he was always a handful. 🤣 Is that your only kid? That was a great time to scale back on toys and not bring in as much I really wish I would have done that with my kids If I had a time machine I think that would be something I would definitely change. I remember when my daughter was too she had a whole playroom full of stuff and I was like why does she have so much stuff. And then we had two more kids and ended up completely buried in my children love holding on to everything too. 😳

      Yeah Dan is my only child for now :) and I feel like he already has too many toys, but I’m so glad I’m starting my minimalism journey now so I can scale back, as you said, and keep only the things that he truly loves.
      The hardest thing is that he has people that give him so many gifts :) so I may need to start setting boundaries with those people and tell them he doesn’t need anything haha. Or give them specific items that he does need.
      Dan just had a birthday and was seriously spoiled, so I need to declutter his toys again 🤦🏼‍♀️

      @@Lindsay_Lexus Yeah we got hit hard with grandparent toys or big birthdays with family where we'd come home with literally a car full of toys. I have a 12-year-old and 9-year-old girls. And a 4-year-old boy. Waaaaayyyyy too much stuff. A great thing to suggest for birthdays and stuff in the future is memberships places I love having like museum or zoo memberships. Or gift cards or cash like you said it's great to get cash as presents! Or if I have a specific need for my kids like coats or shoes that is always a great thing because they tend to be a little bit pricier. Or if there's a specific toy or item or something to go with a set of things he already likes you could always mention that to them. We definitely started doing more things like cash for presents and memberships places for Christmas.

      My kids are never the kids like forget their toys either so like I can't just sneak crap out on them. I have stuff that's literally been in the basement for 4 years and they're still talking about wanting to play with it. My plan has been to do a toy rotation but never enough hours in the day to even get to that good spot. Always another birthday or holiday around the corner.

      Man it’s tough being a mom! Haha 😂
      I’m hoping to set the present boundaries before Christmas, we’ll see if my family is ok with it :) but It will take time to explain to people that I am a minimalist and my kids really don’t need excessive amounts of toys and clothes to be happy. In fact its usually the other way around. Kids tend to be happier and play longer with less tous

      @@Lindsay_Lexus I am glad Lindsay. I started minimalism 10 yrs ago. Before I even knew of Marie Condo, and the rest. I had to ask myself serious questions. And be honest. So far, everyone else has touched the cornerstone of the questions I asked myself back then. I was travelling with a pack of consumerism. And not being real to me. I had fantasy images that had to be confronted and be rid off. I still remember my shoe collection. What a nightmare. But when I look back, I could have taken money spent on nonsense and should have made a difference by helping and giving to my family and friends and those in need. Those are never mistakes or regretted. As you forge your own trail and path, you will see the clarity of this. Its hard now, because you are buried in it, physically, mentally and emotionally. The light qt the end of the tunnel is there. It gets lighter as time goes, but don't give up, and keep it going. It is an endless process, because you exist in the material world. The influence is strong and the struggle real. But the wisdom gained is power. It won't be just given to you, you walk it, do it qnd you will see and understand how freeing your mind will become. Yes, it feels good to be light. Just keep doing and going, you will have the success!
