- These are 17 tarot decks that I would recommend for beginners. All are based on the Rider Waite Smith system, which makes accessing relevant learning resources very easy.
I have tried to include a mix of independent and mass produced decks. I have also tried to avoid sharing any decks that are out of print or hard to find but, as that changes every day, when you watch this video things may have changed.
This video is an update to one I made in 2016: Tarot Deck Recommendations for Beginners, which you can find here: • Tarot Deck Recommendat...

I have and use the Tarot Mucha. It's beautiful and I just resonate so strongly with it. I also love the fact it has no words. It just means anyone can use it no matter the language and I love that.
Alot of years ago, my mother got me the Mary Hanson deck as my first set. It was a perfect beginner deck and I still love it to this day!
Pick a deck that's so beautiful (or appealing) that you'll never get tired of looking at it. Because you will look at it A LOT while learning.
I started with RWS style cards, bought three (maybe it was 5, lol) decks including the traditional RWS, the Gilded Tarot (with the Beginners Guide To Tarot), the black cat tarot, and a dreamy style tarot I can't think of the name... because I wanted to start right away with comparative tarot and looking for different ways to show the same ideas, and get different outlooks from different books.
I know this is an old video, but I just found this video. you're the reason I bought the Osho Zen tarot the other day. it's my second deck that I own now. I love it so much. I watched so many collection decks. that deck caught my attention. I've been enjoying it. thank you much. Also I'm a new subscriber as a now.
Thank you so much for this video 🙏🏻🔮🃏. I’m only starting to learn about Tarot. I loved hearing your story of how you got into tarot. I enjoy your channel. 👍🏻
Hello Katey from California. Thank you for all the knowledge you share. I've been a kitchen Witch for a few years but my life was so super busy and having my daughter's husband and rambunctious 2 and a half year old grandson in my household made a little challenging. Now I'm retired and it was so refreshing to find you with this knowledge in Tarot and other areas to seek more knowledge. Thank you so much for sharing you ideas. Please continue to enlighten us with more. I appreciate you. Blessed be Love and light and8ght
Thank you for recommending more than just the traditional rider Waite deck. I’ve been having a hard time connecting with them and have been looking for other alternatives ❤️
So helpful video, right on time! My preferences: Anna k, Osho Zen, Mucha!! Absolutely beautiful! I read all the explanations on Osho Zen Tarot and I must say that is very deep...each card is a one day meditation! Keep on helping us "the beginners"! Hugs! 🍀😊🍭🌹😘
Hi Katie! Yes I would love a video on the different systems
Thanks. This was interesting to learn about these decks. As a newbie I've reallly appreciated Mystic Mondays, Neo Tarot and Tarot of the Divine as my first decks.
The Steampunk Tarot and the Gilded Tarot also strike me as good beginner decks -- both very much in the RWS tradition and with good substantial guidebooks by Barbara Moore.
Yes, I agree! I’ve heard a lot of people say they learnt with those decks. 😊
Thank you. I’m diving more into tarot as it was a tool that I overlooked so much. I’m currently decluttering my collection but once done I’m going to look Into these decks
I'm learning and the rider waite tarot cards are my favorite too.
Wow I love this! Some great decks here Katey. I particularly liked the Hezicos Tarot!
Thank you for the suggestions, so many decks added to my Wish List now 😉
Thanks, Simon! I'm glad you enjoyed it. The Hezicos is a wonderful little deck, totally underrated in my humble opinion! :) x
Some of the nicest decks I've seen!
I love the Ana K artwork...Great job..Thankyou
I love your copy of the Aquarian Tarot! Great video!
Hi Katie, this was so helpful. I have just ordered the Anna k tarot. As soon as I saw it I loved it. Can't wait for it to arrive 😁
Fabulous! I hope you enjoy it :)
Yes pleeeeease pretty please to the 3 systems for beginners 😇😇😇
The Shadowscapes was the first deck I chose, and you reminded me of the World Spirit Tarot! I thought it was out of print, but I found out she came out with a second edition!
Awesome choices..I like that you included many different styles! Some of my personal favorites (not included in this video) that could be great for beginners are the Steampunk Tarot by Barbara Moore, Dreaming Way Tarot ,the Green Witch Tarot and the Wheel of the Year Tarot. :)
All great choices - in fact, a couple of people have mentioned the Steampunk now! 😊
I love how whimsical the shadowscapes tarot is! I'm not usually drawn to deck with people in thru and prefer animal ones, but I'm totally feeling that one!
They almost feel fae or alien in some way, so I can see why you like it! 😊
My first and currently deck is tarot dore to study. Love your videos
I love the tinned version of the Centennial..I recently trimmed it..so cute. You look lovely in blue..💙💙👗👗💙💙
Oooh it would make a lovely mini deck trimmed! Sounds adorable! And thank you! :D xx
Love this deck in 2019 😍always looking for a unique deck. 💕
These are stunning! I am so, so disappointed that the publishers chose to make the english version so small. This is my favorite tarot deck and I have run myself in circles trying to get my hands on a bigger copy. Thanks for this video, though.
Thanks for sharing. Being a beginner this has been most helpful.
No worries, Julie, I’m glad it helped!
I love the fountain tarot and ohso zen tarot. Thank you!
Great video, as always! A video on the different systems would be awesome. :)
I’ll get planning! 😊
Thanos for sharing these!!
I just was on Amazon and I noticed that they are selling a RW deck that's already borderless and seems to be the Centennial style. I'm going to definitely be purchasing it as soon as I have the bread available. I'm thinking my use of the word bread for $$ gives my age away. Yeah, I'm from the hippie generation and proud to be :)
Hi Katey, do you have an updated version of this? I love this suggestion, thanks.
This is awesome! Subscribing and liking! 👍🏻
I would LOVE to hear about the different schools of tarot and reasons why someone may or may not choose to work with that school, the history of the school (brief), and what makes them similar or different. Your videos are so wonderful and very much appreciated
I’m putting some notes together, so keep an eye out in the next month or so! 😊
Yaay! You're the best!
Great selection of recommendations of decks for beginners. I considered making a similar video but ended up making a "What to consider when choosing your first deck" video instead. Apart from what you mentioned I would also recommend the Morgan-Greer Tarot, Robinwood Tarot, Lo Scarabeo Tarot (even though it claims to be a mixture of RWS, Marseille and Thoth, it's actually just pure RWS), Llewellyn's Classic Tarot (which I believe now just comes in a set called Tarot Made Easy) and of course Ciro' Marchetti's Gilded Tarot (because it was my coming back to tarot learning deck).
I do hope you make a deck recommendation video next! I do want to get my hands on the Lo Scarabeo Tarot - interesting that it doesn’t have many elements of the Marseille or Thoth as the advertise! Thanks for adding some more great recommendations. 😊
It's strange really. Why advertise it if they don't actually deliver? Anyway, I will definitely be doing a video on beginners deck recommendations. No problem.
I agree. But I can’t wait for you video 😊
When I do readings for myself, I've found that the key words at the bottom of the cards are a distraction... So the Universal Tarot deck would be the perfect one for me!
Exactly, use what works best for you.
Thanks for the introduction
I love the Universal tarot I never seen it until Simon showed it just today so I had to order it I love the pastels of the deck
It’s been the deck I keep in my bag for a year or two now! It’s lovely 😊
Thank you for this video 🙏🏻 I’m just getting into tarot and debating which deck to buy. Do you have a link to the video you mentioned about other RWS clones? Thanks x
I personally use a number of these decks as a first year student of tarot. I also really enjoy the Everyday Witch Tarot, and Shadowscapes is definitely one of my favourites. The otherworldly imagery really opens up my intuition.
Awesome! The Everyday Witch looks super cute 😊
Moon Shadow I purchased Druid craft tarot and than Shadowscapes tarot. Both are wonderful for beginners.
I'm digging the everyday witch tarot.
Did you do a video if the three different tarot systems yet?
Love it thank you dear
Did you do the video on the three tarot systems? Thx :]
I'd love to see a video on the 3 types.
I started out with vision quest, native american tarot 🥰 doin it the hard way 🤪 no, but ive learned to use my intuition more, then learning the meaning of cards after...
Hello:) for someone who is trying to learn how to do tarot if you would have to choose just one which one would be? Thanks!
The fountain tarot really called to me in terms of the artstyle, on the other hand it looks like it's for day-to-day readings and don't have any esoteric whatsoever. Is that impression right?
My first deck is the tarot nekro xiii even tho it's not for begginers. I love it so I don't really care that people say that i shouldn't have gotten it as a new to tarot person
I love the Hezicos set, wish I could get in the UK but not available on Amazon sadly :(
Awesome video. How to trim?
the monstarot is so adorable!!!!!!
Thanks for being clear from the beginning about your prejudice in favour of the Rider Waite tarots. To me they are to tarots what the soul is to spirit . Mainly because of the inversions, just like it happens in the astral world. Waite was a translator of Papus and he did not agree with him that there were any connection between the trump cards and the hebrew letters, 22, thus missing much.
RW tarots do shine on the non trump cards and can make them more attractive to divination oriented people.
There are lot of deck cards, even besides tarot ones . They can be used as awareness expansion tools. Some will even try to avoid what they perceive to be negative cards. But, as we say in French, even the most beautiful girl in the world cannot offer what she hasn’t. Still, even purely psychological based ones can have their usefulness. And not everyone is prepared for the esoteric versions given to humanity by the Initiates. And occultism can be a dark brother to esoterism which may be best avoided.
I’ll always approve of a sincere desire to become a better person and make the world a better place.
Be blessed and an blessing to others.
🙏
Hi Katey!
You inspired me to acquire a number of decks! And dare to buy from Australia!
Just wanted to share with you that today I received the Watersprite Tarot, gorgeous! I live in England, UK. The interesting thing is, it was NOT that expensive, and Alison wisely put the value of the parcel at $15, so I paid NO customs charges!!
(In contrast to another deck I am waiting for from the US, I had to pay £30 in customs charges).

I'd love to see why you chose rws! etc.
I started with the John Holland decks..Psychic Tarot Oracle and Psychic Heart Oracle.. simple decks.
The RWS school is also known as the "English" school. while the Marseilles and Visconti-Sfroza (et al) are known as the "Contental" school.
I absolutely love my World Spirit deck!
Isn’t it just amazing?! 😍
The Spirit Within tarot is great for beginners, especially for those who like the more modern artwork.
I've heard a lot of great things about that deck! :)
What a lovely robust video.... that hopefully won't lead to an empty wallet :P. Cheers!
Wow....I love the backs on those...the one you said was Universal tarot by LoScarabeo. The backs on mine are completely different!
Oh interesting! I've always disliked the backs so much! XD
That's so funny! Figured out why mine were different......they came in a beginners set with a book that I got a very long time ago :)
Mine came in a beginner’s set, too! That’s partly why I always forget the name of the actual deck! 😅
That's crazy! If you were in the US, we could trade decks.
Can you buy your own tarot deck if it is gonna be your first one I know that was one of the first things that pops up on google
Yep, you can do whatever you’d like! I bought my first deck for myself when I was 15!
Are there any tarot books that you'd suggest?
I spoke about some of my favourites in this video: czcams.com/video/OBB8pr8NxZY/video.html
i cant wait to bond with my first deck =)
4:01 4:55❤️⭐✨
I want to get a deck and book not sure what to get
My deck is called The Rider Tarot deck. Is this different from the Rider Waite deck?
I think it's the same.
