Injured? Can’t believe the firefighter survived that was blown away.
That was exactly my reaction. Must be someone young and flexible. I’d be dead AF
No way he survives he literally didn’t even resemble a human as he flew in front of the camera
@@Dillonmac96 You can't see him... the camera isn't fast enoug..slow it down and watch
@Dillonmac96 That was a tire. He was tossed straight back right behind that tractor trailer that went by.
@@Dillonmac96that was a tire it's the angle it looks like it's him
I'ma add this to my list of reasons why I prefer diesel over almost all other forms of power.
Whoa. That fireman that was blown back. Oh man they've got to be in rough shape. :(
My deepest condolences to these true heroes.
I saw the footage of this. I prayed for the firefighters. God bless & protect our firefighters & EMS. 🙏
Captain, thank you for this video and your well said comments, may the firefighters recover.
Praying for all the brave men and women involved in this explosion. Takes a very special kind of person to be a Firefighter. My grandfather was a Firefighter. ❤❤❤
Mad respect to these firefighters, great channel by the way!
1:15 "the safety valves are thermally activated" ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Why are they not pressure activated like in pretty much every single other high pressure application?
I guess you could have thermal ones as backups in case you're afraid that a fire will reduce the structural integrity of the thank, but the main safety valve always should work based on pressure.
Sending lots of prayers
No doubt, their PPE was vital in saving their lives from the blast!
God bless the firefighters and I wish them a speedy recovery 🙏🏻❤️🇺🇸
😢
Hope for the best

@@aaronschocke2147CNG uses a completely different resource and collection method, you’re comparing apples to oranges here.
Some states have cheaper natural gas than they do diesel. Use Google if you don’t believe me.
Be aware of the hazards by performing assessment when first arriving
Thank You for sharing this video with us.
Prayers to all involved.
Firefighters are Absolutely Heroes!
What an awful event , good wishes to all involved
So the truck used natural gas, and it was the Truck’s gas and not the freight.
Correct
I believe that hydrogen tanks are at 3 times the pressure of CNG
It's called a BLEVE (Boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion).
No BLEVE, there is no boiling liquid involved.
mmm yeah cng not lng@@hansnieuwenhuijse2027
Is there an update on the condition of the critically injured firefighters?
You called this a tragedy. I call the aftermath of the explosion a miracle that all nine firefighters weren't kill directly in the blast shockwave. I hope that they all return to work soon.
In my area, all the county trash trucks and the natural gas company vehicles run on CNG. I'll know to avoid them since I am now retired. But how many other trucks and vehicles run on CNG? My first thought would be to pull a line before getting close enough to realizing that it was not diesel powered which can only really be done by being in a position to see the fuel tanks. I see some training or labelling requirements for vehicles coming out in the future.
In Australia we run LPG I even have Dual Fuel on my Vehicle being LPG and Petrol, and anything that has LPG has to be labelled uses a badge of the Back and front Number Plates
@@J-P88 LPG is very very safe compared to CNG.
@@basbass429 interesting, I thought they would of been similar. Looks like I've got some extra reading to do
PRD pressure relief devices do have a fusible link that will release pressure if temperatures hit that temp. This will increase the fire. Cooling of the vapor space of the tank needs to happen quickly with monitors and deck guns. There will be a number of lessons learned on this one.
How did the firefighter live? Thats crazy
Was this a ploy to remove cng from the alt fuel discussion
I was a firefighter paramedic for 16 years And I can tell you, you're trained to look at placards on every single truck. And if they didn't see this, they weren't looking for it The officer in charge. is absolutely to blame, although all of the firefighters should have known what the placards are. I'm sorry. This is. gross incompetence.!
Is this a case of the tank itself exploding or the ignition of vented gases?
What I've learned from all the cng and electrical car fires. It's getting to the point that it's easier to let it burn out than to put it put
I know I’m really late to this, but I hope they’re doing ok and has there been any updates to their condition or if there’s been any charity set up for them in this time of great need 😢
It's almost like putting a bomb in the middle of traffic is kind of a bad idea. Fascinating.
I'm wondering what caused the original fire. Im sure the osha and esbh write up will be interesting reading.
But yeah i thought they took out the cng because of some similar issues.
In Asia you see large trucks with as many as 10 of these cannisters behind the cab. With the way they drive in Asia I always think if them as rolling bombs.
And there we were one moment being told that CNG was the future to save the planet, not EVs which are prone to fire risk.
we had 30 CNG buses each with 5 tanks in the roof
I would have thought that these tanks have both al fuseable plug a preassure relief valve?
Many years ago I was the engineer / plant manager at an industrial gas cylinder manufacturer. All the larger flammable gas cylinders had a valve which incorporated a relief valve.
Of course if the heat input is too high, then the valve may not be able to vent at sufficient rate to prevent bursting.
They do. Unfortunately, a catastrophic failure is still possible.
Prayers for the injured, and charges for whoever came up with that contraption. What a nightmare.
The governor of Cali. wants these bombs on the road---- blame him!!
The question that arises here, was this perhaps a BLEVE(boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion)? The process is very complicated, but the fact is that one safety device plays a leading role: the pressure relief valve.
Technically, it's not a BLEVE because the cylinder is full of compressed gas, not liquid.
I would feel safer with a lit match around gasoline vs being near natural gas.
And if they want to used a compressed gas. Just use Compressed Air it’s safer and you can quickly and safely vent it without having to worry about creating a Biohazard situation
Not my area of expertise but it seems you want the valves to open if the pressure gets to high even if it is below a thermal set point. Also seems like you should have an engineered burst disk if the pressure release valve fails.
They have engineering controls. Unfortunately, you can never eliminate the possibility of a catastrophic failure.
@@StacheDTraining I would think that the rules on the number of pressure relief devices per tank should be revisited by the governing bodies.
Wow, that fighter closest to it, was slammed into the truck, I can't even imagine surviving that, he must have been made of Titanium. I hope those brave badasses are recovering, physically, and emotionally. I know, for myself, that would at minimum make me very timid about certain parts of my job afterwards. True heroes! Those commenting on how it shouldn't be powered like that, it's understandable, and unfortunate, but we don't learn by wins, we learn by loss :\ This event probably made every truck safer, I'd like to think so, at least.
Gas containers are a damned if you do, damned if you don´t when on/in fire! Cool them like crazy to neutralize them, but at the same time if you "miss" that can make them go boom.... I know that in sweden and denmark the firefighters sometimes use a rifle to punkture the bottles to make sure they vent.
So wait, this was not on of these huge tanks on the trailer, but "just" one of the two "fuel tanks" for the truck itself? Do I get this right?
I wonder if they´ll be able to tell what was going wrong here. Sad story. Prayers for the injured!
Correct. They were the fuel tanks for the vehicle.
@@StacheDTraining And the second one, that was shooting the flame out, this is how the overpressure valve should work? Do you by chance know, how much heat these tanks should be able to withstand with working valve?
@@IstvanThree that is how they should work. Venting like that reduces the risk of a catastrophic failure. The failure temperature would depend on the material.
That’s why I will never drive one of those trucks
But to the green movement it's a clean burning fuel so that explosion release clean natural glass into the atmosphere instead of that dirty diesel
First responder training is critical. The firefighters in this incident may not have been aware that they were dousing water onto a CNG-powered truck, but they should know not to do this based on firefighter training resources for natural gas vehicles. CNG systems are very safe, practical, and effective for trucking operations to reduce their emissions and their carbon footprint, as long as firefighters allow the fire safety components onboard the vehicle to operate properly when a thermal event occurs. The NGV industry is committed to ensuring safety for drivers, technicians, and especially first responders as part of owning, operating, or servicing NGVs, or knowing how to properly manage a NGV thermal event. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the brave firefighters that were injured in this incident, and we can relay educational and training resources to anyone involved with NGVs to prevent this from happening again.
Problem is how do you immediately and visually identify a CNG truck over a diesel truck while also factoring in that the first responders may be physically exhausted, mentally burned out, and may miss several more subtle cues.
We can talk about training and best practices all we want, but the system failed here and we need to look at how we can change the system to make it unfailable.
@RadioStaring a CNG truck looks much different behind the cab than a regular diesel semi, plus there are decals all over the truck to indicate it's a CNG powered vehicle. If the driver of the truck is able to, they should relay as much information about the semi and the load as possible to dispatch and first responders as possible. In California, especially 911 dispatch should ask the caller what type of vehicle they'll be dealing with since the push for alternative fueled trucks has created the possibility of CNG or electric trucks being on fire.
@@MsCnote1984 If those decals are burnt up and exhaustion causes a mental lapse on cab identification. Tough deal
No diesel fuel in California cng or electric its going to happen
Whose stupid idea was it to put cng on a vehicle? My God. A rolling bomb. There used to be a lot of propane vehicles around 30 years ago. They all were retired, but not before a few buildings were leveled and more than a few vehicle explosions. Used to have one bus as a natural gas test unit. It didn't work out.
GOD bless and JESUS heal all of the injured Firefighters 🙏🏻❤🙏🏻❤
Diesel is still king!
Who thought CNG out? It is a driving hazard, especially should that truck end up in a violent accident with a tank rupturing and causing a huge explosion.
Prayers to St Michael
No CNG is not a alternative, it is dangerous; heavy tanks, very high pressure. It has been tried in the Netherlands too, it is useless for cars&trucks&busses. LPG is a good alternative though, low pressure and very very unlikely to cause a major explosion. Because it is a liquid, it will start cooking when the tank is punctured, also dangerous but will not instantly go boom. Problems with LPG, poor implementation: the installation are often poor quality and the software of the control-module even worse making the engine run poorly. BUT, petrol-engines can be very easily adjusted to withstand the slightly higher stress caused by the LPG. Older Volvo's from the nineteens are famous for running over 300K miles on lpg without problems.
Agree, LPG is the way forward.
Very surprised there isn't an over pressure relief valve in the tank.
European regs require four hole tanks. Safe and reliable.
Electronic sequential vapour injection running oxygen sensors is clean, safe and efficient.
Plus LPG having a RON of 115 means a more advanced ignition timing map can be run giving more power. 👍
@@IDontWantAHandle101 "Safe and reliable. " For CNG, still no, 60+foot jet flames from a vent due to a small fire initially is not what i call safe. I agree, LPG with good quality tanks and systems is very safe and does NOT have the disadvantage of requiring a very have tank.
That seems like an absolutely idiotic way to fuel a truck. That was horrible to watch. I'm pressure diesel is safer.
Stick to diesel
Someone screwed up, even in the police we were taught about the danger of blevee, and that's what this appears to be.
thank you for sharing..
( I don't feel a " like " is appropriate, hence removing)
You never see a diesel truck exploding like that. How many more have to die/be injured for the sake of the climate fraud?
Okay what is going on with California and common sense man ,you have an extremely high pressure tank on fire and not only do they walk right up to it but they don't even bother stopping traffic. Do they still have any intelligent people in southern California.
See how good this clean air vehicles are you have cng truck burn and ev cars catch on fire So means electric is better cause not enough power government can shut them off if you don’t comply and don’t charge cars so save power for homes
fast recover and best wishes to all
Maker should be liable
I hate to be the ignorant comment, but why were they all standing so close to the off gassing truck?
It's part of the job. We don't know what they knew, sometimes the risks aren't always apparent.
Sue California for horrible regulatory laws. Electric and CNG vehicles are extremely dangerous.
Questioning the elephant in the room-so you guys aren’t prepared to stop these fires and can kill you 9 kinda ways?!?! Only hazmat can deal?!?! You’re scaring me!!! What recourse do WE have? Years ago when vape pens came out a roommate had one next to her bed on the nightstand-caught fire-woken by her screams we all came running and I grabbed a fire extinguisher but it barely worked! I also called 911 and firefighters gave us info and we banned any vape pens from property! She moved out lol!
Over killl but hay they don't foot the bill
"After the explosion 150 firefighters descended on the scene." What? Why? There should have been 150 firefighters there before the explosion to prevent an explosion. After the explosion, all the fuel is burnt and there's not much of a hazard anymore and only a few firefighters are needed to deal with it. This is some really bad training and resource management.
I wasn't ready to watch the video;"injured" is very misleading
A firefighter's definition of the word injury is different than that of the general population.

How recent? I can't confirm these details. However, there was a house explosion that claimed the life of a firefighter in Virginia yesterday.
