Did you know, that the landing party of Emden actually made it back to Germany. After they knew they were trapped on the island they took a seaworthy Sailboat that was anchoring there to Batavia [Jakarta]. From there they were shipped by a liner to the ottoman empire at the southern tip of the Arabian peninsula. And from there they went via train first Istanbul and then carried on to Berlin.

The story of the landing party that were left behind on the island just before Emden engaged the Sydney is also quite spectacular. The Great War channel talks about them on their video on the Emden.
Apparently they found an old, rotting schooner that they somehow managed to fix up enough to be sea worthy, sailed to the Dutch East Indies where they stopped briefly before deciding to try and make their way towards the Ottoman Empire. They eventually met an Austrian cargo ship, which dropped them off at modern day Yemen. There they met a party of local soldiers(?) and fought their way trough the Arabian desert with them, before eventually reaching Constantinople. What a journey.

It is always so great to hear stories like these about knights which fought with both honor and capability, in such wars where the enemy is considered the literal devil it is nice to see men being a threat towards their enemies yet always maintaining respect towards them, these are the real heroes of war and we should all learn something from them, especially the politicians which decided the peace conditions should have taken a slice of that, it would have saved us a lot of blood if they had.

The Emden's exec officer, Hellmuth von Mucke, led the shore party. They witnessed the arrival of the Sydney, and ensuing destruction of their vessel. Before the Sydney returned to Direction Island, the shore party commandeered the schooner Ayesha and fled. Von Mucke led his party of 50 men on a 6-month 10,000 km odyssey back to Germany, via Arabia and Constantinople, with only four casualties. There is a short book, "The Last Corsair" by Dan van der Vat, that describes the saga of the Emden and her crew. A longer treatment is "The Last Gentleman-of-War" by Lochner/Lindauer.

The story didn't end there. The landing party the Emden left on the island decided to make their way back to Germany instead of surrendering. They took a small sailing vessel and made their way across the pacific to the Arabian peninsular, crossed the desert fighting Bedouines, and finally arrived in allied Istanbul. At home they were welcomed as heros. Sadly most of them had to join frontline troops and died later in the war.

I had recently watched another video on the Emden. I'm so glad I watched this soon after. What a contrast! The first video was fine. But your presentation really brought home the expanse of the Emden's travels, the character of her gentleman captain, the quality of her crew (especially her gunnery division), and the drama of each encounter. Well done! I'm your newest subscriber!

@@thecrusaderhistorian9820 Well in my opinion, historical figures like Muller should receive much more mention. His achievements on the high seas are exceptional, yet we don't see him being covered nowhere near as much as some other figures from WW1 and especially WW2, even though he belongs right up there with the best.
