I feel like he started to get bored of playing, I mean he already accomplished everything so the older he got the less he had to prove. Even in his interviews he says he doesn’t miss playing at all.
There's a reason, just not a good one. Most pitchers rely at least a little bit on intimidation. As a manager, you want your opponents to fear your pitcher. Beanballs and brushbacks, intentional or not, will make hitters think twice about crowding the plate next time. If a pitcher apologizes, or goes to check that the hitter is okay, it makes him seem less intimidating. Even though many pitchers do still do this, most are discouraged by coaches/managers because they want to get that intimidation edge over opponents.
