    It was not a NCAA tournament game, but regular season. In 1982 Virginia was ranked 1st in the country and featured one of the great collegiate centers in history, 7'4" Ralph Samson. Virginia went to Hawaii and lost to a small Hawaiian team, Chaminade University. Not many of us had heard of Chaminade before that game.

One of the parents told me that when the buzzer went off, their son turned to his father and said, " Daddy, do I have to go to school tomorrow?" I made all those boys put their desks in front of a full page picture of Dean Smith cutting down the nets. 40 years have passed and they still go on Facebook and remind me of that day!😇🤣

    A few things that I think are important for context to understand how these upsets happen, and why they are so common during the tournament.
    First off, these games are all played at neutral locations, and there will be multiple games from across the bracket being played in that location. In the first two rounds, each location has 8 teams playing their ties at the venue. That means that even for the biggest teams (#1 and 2 seeds) with the largest fan bases, they might only have 65% of the fans there. This means that if a #4 seed is playing in the same location as where a different #1 seed is playing, all of the neutral #1 fans will start cheering for the underdog.
    Also, most of the biggest teams don’t have players that stay for all four years, they leave after 1-2 years to go play in the NBA. This means there is constant turnover on the squad each year. These little schools that pull an upset usually have a core group of 3-4 juniors/seniors that have team chemistry and experience together.
    Lastly, they need to get hot and start raining down 3s because their players are almost always smaller so it’s much harder to score from inside the arc.

    • @a00141799

    When the smaller schools get an automatic bid, they’re always a low seed such as 13,14,15,16. This means that the teams who dont win their conference tournament, at worst get a 12 seed. Usually the 12 seeds from big schools are a lot better than the small schools who are a 13 seed. This is why there’s a lot of first round upsets where the 12 beats the 5 or the 11 beats the 6. The teams are a lot closer in competition than a 4 vs 13 or 3 vs 14 and so on.

  • @dez797

    One thing to understand about these upsets is just how different some of these teams/schools/players are, especially in the new NIL era where players can make money off endorsements. Last year #15 seed St. Peter's beat #2 seed Kentucky. St. Peter's plays in an arena that seats 3,000 people (and is never filled) while Kentucky plays in front of 23,000 in a state-of-the-art facility. Kentucky's teams are typically filled with future NBA players while march madness represents the final moments of basketball for many of the St. Peter's players. St. Peter's has a total enrollment of around 2,000 while many schools eclipse 40,000 with large athletic department budgets where the players are compensated well via various endorsements while playing for major schools. At St. Peter's opportunities like that are limited.
    John Calipari, the head coach of Kentucky, makes of $8 million per year in salary alone, while many low-major D1 head coaches sit around $300,000. A D1 head coaching gig will always pay well, but the amount of resources the coach of Kentucky is working with versus the coach of St. Peter's is insane to comprehend. So the fact that St. Peter's won was an upset which is difficult to replicate at the professional ranks in any sport.

    What makes the NCAA tournament fascinating is that the so--called favorites are that because they play in a better conference but there are times when the underdogs who win are actually larger schools in population than the favorites so the it puts a twist on the "little" guy beating the "big" guy

  • @Davehhhh
    @Davehhhh Před rokem +6

    What makes march madness tournament so special is a lot of these underdogs aren't seen a lot so these top seeds may not have a lot of tape to study the opponents.
    Also a lot of these of these teams are playing in neutral sites throughout the tournament (except #1 seeds where they make them closest to their home area they can early on). So while fans do travel with the teams, you do get a lot of neutral fans at these games. In the opening round, there's 4 games played at the same court throughout the day, they just play at noon, 3, 6 and 9pm (around those times). So a lot of neutral fans or fans of teams in the same bracket get caught up wanting the upsets. So the longer those games are close for top seeds, the more the fans believe that those upsets can happen.

    There were some very old clips in this video. A testament to how moments of heroics in this tournament are never forgotten and cement teams and players forever into our collective memories. College teams have reunions decades into the future where they bring the members of their past teams to lavish ceremonies to honor and remember their achievements. Many players and coaches are honored forever on plaques or bronze statues erected on their campus and have stadiums named after them. Its quite crazy. But fun as hell!! 😛
    Great watching you two blokes get a look at March Madness. The upsets (which to be fair are rare) usually the top seeds win and the absolute two best teams play in the semifinals and finals. The finality of a loss. The excitement of these young guys playing on such a big stage. The attendance of these games are always sold out at every venue no matter who is playing. But the 08 run Davidson made to the elite 8 was remarkable and they knocked out traditionally strong programs with wins over Gonzaga the # 7 seed, Georgetown the # 2 seed and Wisconsin the # 3 seed, all while being A #10 seed. Ok in prep for Oral Roberts making it again after winning their conference, you gotta watch their run in 2021, they were the second 15 seed to make it to the sweet 16. They upset Ohio State in overtime, then Florida in the second round. Both incredibly close games.
    The reason I highlight Oral Roberts is because 3/5 of their starters return (including the #1 scorer in the country that year, Max Abmas. He was also the only person other than Steph Curry to score 25+ in all of his NCAA tourney games), and the team is better this year than they were that year. Definitely worth watching a highlight video from. They are one of the top 10 most fun teams to watch, lots of 3’s a 5’11” Max Abmas point guard, and a 7’5” center that shoots 3’s more than layups and dunks. Truly a spectacle😂

    I think one reason Virginia tended to struggle a bit in the tournament was that the years when they were very good, they were one of the slowest-paced teams in the country. It means the other team doesn't have to be lucky for as long, effectively. They did win the title one year, but before that they had a solid reputation as a choke artist.
    The Hampton-Iowa State game from 2001 without the seeds listed was a 15-over-2. I had said in a comment on a previous video that that happened only about once every 5-6 years, but it's become a bit more common recently - partly because of the introduction of the First Four in 2011 (which means that a couple of the 15 seeds would have been 14s under the older rules). After 2001, we went 11 years before it happened again - and then there were three in a span of two years.

    Most people are commenting on the UMBC-Virginia game, but the Syracuse-Virginia game deserves some context too. It was much later in the tournament than most upsets (Elite Eight) but Syracuse is a bit of a unique case. They have been in decline the past decade or so, but they still often do well in the tournament because they play a very unique type of defense - the 2-3 zone. Since teams don't know who they are playing until just a few days before, it can be hard to beat teams that have strange looks as you don't have as long to prep against them, and Syracuse has taken full advantage of that in the past decade.

    The last free throw he missed you hear the announcer say just hit it off the rim. He has made the first. They didn’t show it. So it was a 4 point game. The strategy there is you can score 3 max unless you’re fouled. But the extra seconds running off making them go down the court is what is important.
    If he makes the free throw, they can inbound down court and get a quicker shot. Then possibly a steal on the inbounds pass. And try to win or tie.

    The tournament effectively consists of 64 teams (four play-in games bump the total to 68). Four brackets seeded 1-16, after two rounds 16 teams are left, dubbed the Sweet Sixteen. They play and the winners are dubbed the Elite 8. Once they play, you have the Final Four for the semis and championship.
    All rounds are single elimination. There's no reseeding or changes to the linear brackets along the way.
    Due to the nature of how qualification for the tournament works, some of these upsets are the equivalent of a team from Vanarama South knocking off a top 4 Premier League side. Others are closer to a Championship league team beating City or United, or Leicester winning the Prem. All upsets, but not all alike.

    @DNreacts so there’s context to the UMBC-Virginia game : the university of Virginia ( located in Charlottesville) was the OVERALL NUMBER 1 SEED against university of Maryland Baltimore county ( which was a 16 seed ) previous to that 16 seeds were 138-0 before UMBC ( as Maryland - Baltimore county is colloquially known beat them ) and not only did they beat them they beat them by 20 points, now we can add the Furman university palladins to the list guess who they beat in the first round ….I’ll give u a hint , it’s a school in orange and navy located in Charlottesville Virginia.

    I hope you guys picked up on the fact that the higher seeds are invariably wearing white uniforms (home kits) while the underdogs are wearing dark colored ones (away kits)This will immediately tell you who the lower seed is when you join a game in progress..

    One thing that I think may not be conveyed by this video is the historical context of the teams playing. While the seed tells you the relative strength of a team in a given year, it doesn't tell you the amount of success these teams have had over time. For example, Kansas, Duke, and Kentucky and others from this video are all considered "Blue Bloods" because of their historical success for several decades, so when one of those teams loses to a low seed it is even more unexpected. On the other end of the spectrum, many of the low seeds in this video are experiencing the biggest win in their schools history, while some are teams that come from a bigger conference or have had successful runs before.

  • @magarthur3420
    @magarthur3420 Před rokem +1

    Some of these are a bit misleading. For example at 3:00, Syracuse may be the lower seed but they are a traditional basketball powerhouse. It's not the same as UMBC, Mercer, Middle Tennessee, or Lehigh winning their games.

  • @chroniccomplainer3792

    One thing a newer fan might not realize is how long the last minute of a basketball game is. You cant really tell in a reaction video but the ending to a basketball game is very technical. The team thats down will intentionally foul and try to hit a 3 and then get a steal. If they dont hit a 3 or get a steal they intentionally foul and start over again. Sometimes when a team is LEADING by 3 they will also intentionally foul, because then they force the opponent to NOT get a 3. Theres A LOT of gamesmanship to end a close basketball game. The last minute on the clock can take 45 real time minutes.....

    It's not a perfect analogy, but imagine a single elimination tournament involving the top couple teams of every league from the Premier League down to the National League with a couple of middle performers from Premier and Championship to pad it out. The way you might seed it out is Premier top highest, then Champ top, Premier mid, Champ mid/1 top, 2 top, and lastly the rest of the 2 top/National. Essentially what you're seeing with a 16/15 upsetting a 1/2 is a National team upending a top Premier team with the added drama of ending several of their players careers.
    12 seed vs 5 seed is notorious for consistently having at least 1 upset a tournament because of how the seeding works out. You're taking teams over performing in their league and matching them up against teams that can be considered to be having a relatively disappointing seasons in higher leagues to duke it out.

    March Madness covers more than just the NCAA Division -1A Tournament, notably the NIT (The Nation Invitational Tournament) and CBI. There are also the lower division NCAA tournaments as well. There is actually a reward for a team wining their Division -1A League championship, an automatic bid to the NIT, 32 leagues, 32 invitations to the NIT. If a team wins both their season league championship and then their league tournament championship they go to the prestigious NCAA Division -1A Tournament AKA "The BIg Dance". The spots that are opened up by this in the NIT are filled in by team chosen by a selection committee.
    I won't go into the CBI Tournament, to avoid information overloud.
    The NCAA also owns and runs the NIT.

    • @NannerBrams
      @NannerBrams Před rokem

      The 32 conference winners go to the main NCAA tournament, not the NIT. The NIT is for the next teams that didn't make the 68 team cut in the big dance. Unless you are a small school and you just want a post season bid, the NIT isn't really exciting

    • @BrassEater
      @BrassEater Před rokem

      @@NannerBrams No, in the past that was true for many conferences which had no tournament. Today all 32 conferences have a tournaments, the winner of the conference tournament receiving the conference Auto-bid to the NCAA. If a team has the best conference record at the end of conference play, they automatically qualify for the NIT (per the NCAA web site). Some might confuse the conference TOURNAMENT championship with the conference LEAGUE Championship.

    For the tournament if you don’t know the seeding typically the “underdog” is the team with the colorful uniform and the team in wearing their mostly white uniform is the “favored” team. Great reacts guys. Best way to learn is (the long way) is to pick a team to cheer for that has some history of winning so you can be fairly sure they will be relevant over the next few years as you learn the game and historic rivals. That’s how I’ve been learning rugby over the past year although I chose the Wasps last year only to have them go bankrupt and get shut down this year. How crazy is that 😂😂. That’s unheard of in pro US sports. Anyway, as for college basketball might I suggest Duke. This is completely an unbiased and random selection on my part 😂😂😂. Let’s go Duke!!

      home teams wear the lighter color uni"s also I might add, as some old scoreboards in the past simply went "Home" and " away" teams. Light uni's still given the "home" designation even on neutral courts like the NCAA Tournament. (higher seeds considered the home team)

    I make close to 50 brackets every year. None of them stay perfect after the first day. I do different strategies to making brackets such as flipping a coin, asking a friend to pick a color (the 2 primary colors of the teams playing), or even which team’s real life mascot would win in the wild. Gotta get creative to try to be the first person to ever have a perfect bracket. When making a bracket, the more you think about a game, the more you’re going to be wrong. Just make a pick and move on, then kick yourself days later asking “why did I think that was a good idea?” Keep up the good work

    Tbh, the University of Maryland-Baltimore College's win over #1 Virginia should have an asterisk next to it. UMBC had 21 wins in their season even b4 their conference tourney & finished w/ 24. Virginia was the overall top #1 team in the nation yet didn't get to play the winner of 1 of the play-in games for 16 seeds (those teams typically are just above or even under .500 for the season). I don't know what the committee was thinking when they put these 2 together, but they often make mistakes. Power conference teams that don't get 20 wins are often over seeded whilst mid-majors & low-majors w/ better records are often under seeded. You can take it to the ATM it'll happen again this year.
