- In this video, i finally fix a railing to keep my dog out from behind my Hvac units. I also set my stop block to the wrong length which made for a big mistake. The age old saying, “measure twice, cut once,” is a great saying but you have to also set your stop blocks correctly also. If I would have measured after the first cut, the issue would have been fixed but by the time i found out what i did i could only laugh at myself and i hope yall laugh too. I dont care if you laugh at me or with me, just as long as you’re laughing! I hope yall enjoy! Thanks for watching and God Bless!

#DIY #banister #deckrailing - Jak na to + styl
Many years ago an old chef who taught me everything I know about cooking told me….MEASURE,MEASURE AND MEASURE. I have carried this throughout my life creating products using many different materials. From sewing to woodwork it’s always the same. At 63 and a woman I am working on my front picket fence and a balustrade for my verandah is next. BTW…I have limited machinery so I cut everything by hand. Never to old to learn and learn from your mistakes!
Definitely! I could’ve edited that out and no one would’ve known…
It does the job. The way you did those slanted holes you made it look so easy. Who needs a Kreg Jig with those skills?
Nice work.
Lol. I have a couple of kreg pocket hole jigs but only use for shop furniture and face frames. Figured it was a waste if time to use for this. Thanks!
Awesome video and thank you for sharing the measurement mistake. Some people forget they are not perfect. ✝️
Thank you! That is definitely true unfortunately.
Great video, You made the best out of your mistake! I would have done the same. I have a shepherd just like yours, but she’s getting older now and I don’t have to dog proof everything now a days. Peace ✌️
Time to get another one?
That’s awesome
Thanks man! Cheap and easy!
Everytime you walk past it you'll look and remember that moment haha 😉
Definitely lol
who cares if it's off a smidge, it's just to keep the dog out anyway. Plus, once you get the stain on it will blend in just fine. I don't think anyone will be looking that closely anyway. Thanks for the video. Now I know what I'll be doing around my tiny little deck 👍
Thank you! No one has noticed it in person. More than likely no one on CZcams would have noticed if i left it out. I just thought it was hilarious lol. Have blessed one.
@@HurdCrafters Thank you 😊 You also have a Very Blessed Day.
People need to consider adding a way to open, or easily remove sections so HVAC can be serviced. Being trane equipment, those coils take extra time to clean properly. Servicing these would also be a pain and most contractors would pass, or require adequate space. Not being lazy, but for safety in a very tight space around high voltage, refrigerant, etc.
People also need to read more comments before commenting… that being said, i agree. I didn’t build the house. I do my own maintenance anyways and 8 screws to remove a panel is not a problem… if thats an issue when it takes like 2 minutes thats just pure laziness which is so common these days…
Like you said I too learned a long time ago always measure 2 times and cut once... We all make mistakes, goes with how we learn to not do it the next time.
Truth! This is not the first time it has happened. I have done this a couple times at the miter station when i cut on the opposite side that i am used too...
no its measure once cut twice? isnt it??? lol
It sure seems like that on occasion lol
Great video. I have a question. What kind of extension for your drill is that for the back screws?
Thank you! It is a Milescraft drill90plus right angle drill attachment with keyless drill chuck. Try to say all of that in one breath lol. Its around 20 dollars and has came in handy many times! Thanks for your comment and thank you for watching!
I showed my carpenter your video and told him this is how I want my porch railing done, he got mad and stormed off! 🥲
Are you joking? Did he have any explanation?
@@HurdCrafters it wasn’t how he builds things and I don’t think what I wanted mattered. I told him the bottom of the porch was only 6 inches to the ground that I wasn’t going to have a keg party where people will fall it’s purely decorative so I can sit on my porch with my dogs.. he got upset at the nails part too. I’m thinking I should try and build it myself your method!
@DebbiesWorld my goodness. Sounds like you should build it yourself and send him photos of the finished product to make him more mad lol. If ya have questions, im happy to help!
Looks great. What is that attachment you have on your drill for drilling on the back side? Looks really handy.
Milescraft drill90 right drill attachment. It is extremely handy!
😹 I've made the same type of mistake many times...
I seam to always make mistakes when i get in a rush. Most are fixable but this one, not so much...thanks for watching!
Don’t be like , I have to cross every T & dot every iiiii great job .
I’m not sure I understand… ‘don’t be like ,’ ???
7:29 almost got a finger watch that hand placement lol
In normal speed it wasn’t so close if I remember correctly but that being said, i did change hand placement right after lol.
Hi! Thanks for the vid. If I want to paint it white, should i do it before or after assemble?
I would paint before assembly.
@@HurdCrafters you need to let pressure treated wood cure out usually 4 to 6 weeks, depending on how wet it is before painting or staining it.
Did anyone say anything about pressure treated wood? You are correct though it should sit for a while. If you sand it you could paint sooner im sure. If we have questions regarding anything we will definitely let you know because it appears you will have an answer lol
I might've missed it but are you using pressure treated 2x4's or regular ones? Someone recently told me not to use pressure treated for railing because of the shrinkage.
I am using pressure treated. I needed to because it is exposed to a lot of weather. In my experience you will get shrinkage with any lumber from a big box store...the bigger problem with pressure treated is twisting...
@@HurdCrafters Thanks for the follow up!
You’re welcome!
Really new to home improvement, why do you cut off the ends of the wood before you cut it to length?
Great question! It is not required and if you do so, it’s recommended you add a sealer to the ends. I do it because i find that big box stores sell lumber that do not have square ends and I like tight fitting joints during assembly because when wood moves overtime, gaps will more likely appear. The less gaps i have during assembly the less gaps visible once movement has occurred. Thanks for watching!
No wonder they say, "Measure twice, cut once!"'
Yes sir!
good job .......lol
Right. Thanks lol
How do you secure the handrail so it doesn’t wobble if you only need one side?
There are multiple way to attach the banister and the correct way would depend on your decking and framework… ideally you want to connect to the framework with lag screws or bolts…
25 dollars when this video was made. 500 now
Definitely! Lumber is up like 193% last i checked!
omg yes lol wanted a 16*16 deck but got a 12*12😩😩 we will add on when lumber goes down.
If i could only go back in time lol
You ever have to work on the ac you will have to move the rails.
Yea that has been said many times. Its not a big deal to remove 8 screws and remove the banister if needed.
I guess your gonna remove the railing every time the HVAC is serviced or has issues?
Correct. 8 screws holds it in place so it should be pretty easy...
How do you service the AC unit??
Service them? What? I’m supposed to do that???
They are boxed in so well already. I have walked away from easier jobs. Getting to service ports at bottom back of condensers is going to suck for the tech. Much less seeing what you are doing back there. Systems should have 24 inches clearance all the way around.
I didn’t design any of this set up. Trust me, I understand there should be 24 inches. That being said, walk away from easier jobs? I just did the maintenance on the systems myself in 4 hours and i had no issues after removing the banisters. Im not skinny either…
@@Yourused That's what I thought. I would think this would lower efficiency, and the HVAC tech is going to hate it. Personally, I like to keep my HVAC clean, so I blow out the crud every week or so with an electric leaf blower. Keeps things from getting clogged and cemented in there. No way to do that with this installation.
I wish I could do that but I’m stuck with set up. Cant win them all…
You used a punch on wood lol
Something wrong with that?
Ahh close enough
Yep LOL
Those HVAC units are installed way to close together and in restricted airflow space. That will noticeably reduce their efficiency, especially when both are running at the same time. Just saying.
Yea and so has many other people in the comment section. It’s important to note, I did not build the house and I was not rebuilding all the frame work. That being said, i have had no issues with the uniting warranting changing everything. First set of units lasted from 1987 till around 2010 and they were still running. My grandmother just decided to upgrade. Then in like 2017 i did need a common repair but it was only $2,000 more for a new unit and an 11 year warranty. When i do rebuild in the future, i plan to allow more space so its more easily accessible without removing the banisters. The whole purpose of the banisters was to keep my dog out…
Sorry HVAC guy! 😂
Luckily it’s removable and I remove it if I require anyone to work on it other than myself…
why not use nailer much faster easier
Unfortunately I don’t have a nailer...
Real carpenters don't use nailers... ;-)
Won't pass code. Pickets can't be no more than 4 1/2" apart on center. A child can get his head stuck between the pickets.
You are correct sir but I am not trying to pass code, i just made it match the rest of the house. Children won’t get their heads stuck if they are being supervised like they should. If by chance a head did get stuck it can be disassembled pretty easily with a screw driver. If that fails, its made of wood so cut it lol.
What does on center actually mean?
On center means every 4-1/2” you make a mark and the marked center of your picket will match up with those marks every 4-1/2”. I hope this helps.
@@HurdCrafters thank you
You’re welcome! Take care.
it is not “to short” it is spelled “too short” 🤣
Well heck! Reckon how I missed that…lol
can anyone translate what hes saying??
You don’t speak hillbilly?
Was it intentional for you to talk really fast?
Highly doubtful lol
as an hvac tech i hope you never call me to service or repair your equipment.... you put your AC guy "into a hole" with this handywork ... decks are great but you should have moved your equipment. just sayin
The banisters are easily removed and no one has had issues in the past. Ideally I would like the units somewhere else also but who can afford that right now? What would you charge to move the equipment?
If you can’t remove eight screws to get to the AC then you aren’t much of a tech guy!
@jenniferbailey5914 exactly!
You must not like your hvac guy
Haha. I remove the banister when the unit needs to be serviced…
this is at 3x speed idk what the .... hes saying, no measurements , no how to.. not great vid.
Sorry to disappoint. It’s not technically a how to video but i will definitely consider your opinions in future videos.
This is a joke right ? Like you are showing people on not how to build ?
You got it. Ever make a mistake? I leave everything in, especially the mistakes lol.
