    The biggest problem i see with gh5 is if dirt gets between the protective glass & the sensor you need to send the camera back to panasonic as sensor needs to be changed :( this has already happened to quite a few users. so be cautious when changing lenses outdoors. also my unit died after 3 months of light use. whole pcb needs to be changed

    Great reviews Tom! Love it as this is the most comprehensive review I have ever seen on CZcams! You really do better than others out there on CZcams! After long research finally made my decision to go with gh5!

    Another great video Tom! I was looking to see when you switched away from the GH5....have you started using the Sony a6500, the BLack magic, or are you still using the GH5?
    Thanks!

  • @DavidSalahi
    @DavidSalahi Před 7 lety +1

    One of the new features that I really like compared to the GH4 is the in-body stabilization. When combined with lens stabilization the GH5 alone is almost as good as my Pilotfly stabilizer--which died prematurely. But now I don't need the gimbal anymore.

  • @darrylsmith3102
    @darrylsmith3102 Před 7 lety +6

    Very Nice Review. NOW do a Test with one of those handheld 3-axis gimbals with a small ROKINON prime lens on the camera to see if it could handle it as far as stabilization is concerned.
    Thanx Tom.

  • @avnishparker
    @avnishparker Před 6 lety +2

    I really love your Videos, However, there are some Corrections to be made in this Video.
    GH5 doesn't record 4K 60 FPS at 10 Bit, but at 8 Bit
    10 Bit video recording option is available only for 30 FPS, or below.

  • @JoelGustafsson
    @JoelGustafsson Před 6 lety +3

    Hi Tom! I'm planning to buy the GH5 and an external monitor/recorder. What battery pack would you recommend (taking into consideration that I will be flying all over Europe)?

    • @KutWrite
      @KutWrite Před 6 lety +1

      The Atomos Inferno he demos has clips for two batteries right on its back. It can continue to record with one whilst you switch out the other.

  • @sittingnow
    @sittingnow Před 7 lety +4

    Worth noting, the 10 bit in 1080p only goes up to 60fps. Anything higher is 8 bit.

    • @SewTubular
      @SewTubular Před 7 lety

      Yes, it's a limitation of not having enough internal processing power. Maybe we will get higher 10-bit fps when the GH6 comes around in about 2-3 years.

  • @victorbart
    @victorbart Před 7 lety

    For me the best function is the in body image stabilization. It helps alot with shooting handheld hanging out of a tourbus on holiday. And you get shoot pictures between 1/4 1/8 shutter with good results

  • @lprzytula
    @lprzytula Před 7 lety +3

    I just wanted to add that 180fps at 1080 is soft. Some say it is closer to 720 than 1080. It improves at 120fps but is still a bit soft. Still pretty awesome though.

    • @kenyee88
      @kenyee88 Před 7 lety +1

      the 90fps 1080p on the GH4 was super soft too..just not enough memory bandwidth to save that much data. On the GH4, people did 60fps 1080p and then used twixtor to slow it down more.
      The GH5 probably has similar memory bandwidth issues at 180fps 1080p.

    • @KutWrite
      @KutWrite Před 6 lety

      I think that's why some use the Atomos with the HDMI connection.

  • @koolkutz7
    @koolkutz7 Před 7 lety +2

    Excellent overview Tom. The 10 bit footage looks great. I have the Panasonic G80/85 which is good enough for me right now. The only thing I wish it had is the variable frame rate like the GH5. I wish the GH5 had built-in ND filters-that would make life a lot easier for achieving the correct shutter angle for video. Which ND filters do you use/recommend? Yo uar right about the lenses too; the first 2 lenses I bought were the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 & 35-100mm f2.8-both sharp & detailed. The Pana/Leica f1.4 is superb too, but more expensive than the f1.7 version-oh well! Not gonna get rid of my f1.4 on now as it rocks! Keep up the good work.

    It's a shame I have a Nikon D3200 with very little video options, it fights with me a lot. It lacks a good video mode. No flip out screen, or headphone jack. I don't have the money to buy a GH5 or any new camera for that matter. It sucks, since it seems like any camera is better then mine. Great review!

    • @SewTubular
      @SewTubular Před 7 lety

      If your budget is tight, you might consider a used Nikon D5300 which has a flip-out screen and shoots pretty good 1080p video. ( you can even download the free FLAAT cine profiles for Nikon cameras to get an even better image )
      A used D5300 sells for about $300 US on eBay right now.

  • @basspig
    @basspig Před 5 lety

    This camera takes most of the boxes for making a great travel video camera but the one problem that I've discovered is that coming from something like the Sony rx10 Mark 3, which has a 25 x zoom lens taking you from effectively 24 mm to 600 m m at f 2.42 f 4 the closest Lens to that is see 25 to 400 or 12 to 200 m m four thirds lens but it's an F 5.6 very slow. And it's only 16.6 X Zoom. So you're stuck having to carry multiple lenses once again.

Quick Question: (might not be quick lol) You're using the Atomos Ninja inferno, excellent screen! But what is the benefit of recording externally?

    • @TomAntos
      @TomAntos  Před 7 lety

      Karlos Colon it gives you 4k 60fps in 10bit. In camera you get 10bit in 4k up to 30fps. Also you get a better codec for editing then internally in camera which is havealy compressed and doesn't work right now in premiere davinci etc. Has to be transcoded.

    Hey Tom . Great review mate! I'm currently shooting with the panasonic g7, it's a great little camera but I'm really starting to see some problems when shooting in low light I'm getting a pretty noisy image if I push it any further than iso 800. Not sure if you have used it before but is this camera going to crush the g7's low light performance? Cheers mate.

    • @TomAntos
      @TomAntos  Před 7 lety

      GH5 is better in low light than the G7. That's for sure but it won't crush it. If you want a huge difference then you might be better off with one of the Sony cameras like that a6500 or a7s2

    Great video Tom, thank you. I want to ask you if you've used the Came.TV cage along with the Metabones adaptor? Someone had said online that they couldn't fit the Metabones adaptor on the camera with the cage - which I hope isn't true since I need both the cage and adaptor. From the looks of it, the cage you showed (on the right) that fits the audio interface looks like it's design would allow an adaptor. Thanks again Tom.

    Hey Tom! Do you know if i can use an nvme drive in the atomos ninja inferno (through a sata enclosure, in the SSD caddy)? Of course coupled with the GH5. I have tried 2 SSDs so far, but they cant reach the advertised 10bit-4K-60fps. (Sandisk ULTRA II 480Gb, and a mid-range Corsair). Their customer support offers very little to no help unfortunately. Also no 1080p 120fps or 240fps is available. Thoughts on that? Cheers!

    @kenyee88 Před 7 lety +1

    Would have been good to mention whether you thought the image stabilization was good enough so you don't have to buy a stabilizer.
    The GH4 is also down to $600-800 used, so that's also a great beginner's camera. Take the money and invest it in lenses or accessories like lighting which make a huge difference.

    • @LukaszAntos
      @LukaszAntos Před 7 lety +1

      since I work with Tom, I will answer - Tom can correct me or add to it :-) for most pro work (ex. films, music videos), Tom would still use a stabilizer. But for smaller budget, quickly shot productions, the in-body stabilization is good enough. It also depends on how long and fast moving is the shot you want to stabilize. So, you will still need a stabilizer at times.

    • @LukaszAntos

      @AvantTom Před 7 lety

      Yeah i bought the GH4 soon after the GH5 came out for 800. It's damn near the same camera for half the price. As far as stabilization goes, I want to get a gimbal at some point down the line but for now I kind of close all the legs on my tripod and hold it in my arms with and just move carefully, it works well enough.

    @TheDevineware Před 7 lety

    I see you have the same lens I have , 12-35. I like it with one exception and it's big for the price, I can not focus manually at all. I have heard others say it works but you must be patient. I can not get it to move the focus at all. Just keep spinning slowly but nothing. I love my sigma 16 35 with meta bones but it's so big I wish I could get the 12 35 to work.
    Do you or anybody reading this think it's defective? I guess I should call Panasonic but I am new to photography so I fear it's user error

    Great camera, but Panasonic lenses is the reason why I still didn't buy GH5 and saving for Metabones and full frame lenses. Panasonic lenses are quite expensive, not really 2.8 and results are quite average. You can see much better results with Olympus Zuiko, or other lenses with metabones.

    • @SewTubular
      @SewTubular Před 7 lety

      Everyone has their preference, but looking at benchmarks and my own tests, Panasonic lenses are pretty much equivalent to the Olympus lenses. The only place where Olympus excels over Panasonic are the old 4/3 Super High Grade lenses which cost a bomb and do not come in Micro 4/3 mount. I am hoping that Olympus will eventually bring the SHG lenses to their m4/3 system.
      Also, keep in mind that MANY of the Full Frame lenses are NOT SHARP at their widest aperture, so you have to stop them down 1-2 stops to get sharp corners. I own eight Nikon FF lenses that I use along with my m4/3 lenses, and their best feature is the softness of their image compared to any of my Micro 4/3 lenses. ( Olympus, Panasonic, Samyang, Sigma native m4/3 lenses )

      SewTubular so you kind of agree as well that situation about gh5 lenses isn't ideal and metabones is almost necessary for better results

      No, not at all. There are some fantastic Panasonic m4/3 lenses on the market, but you have to be careful which lenses you choose to buy. Currently I own the following lenses in m4/3 mount...
      Pana-Leica 8-18mm f/2.8-4.0 : Fantastic lens, very sharp wide open, parfocal, great for gimbal work
      Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 : Fantastic lens, very sharp, my general purpose work-horse lens
      Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 ver II : Fantastic lens, very sharp, great general purpose lens.
      Panasonic 100-300mm f/4.0-5.6 ver II : Great long lens for hand-held shooting with GH5 DUAL IS
      Samyang 7.5mm f/3.5 : Good "cropped" fish-eye lens ( very compact )
      Sigma 30mm f/1.4 : Very sharp m4/3 lens, good for shallow DOF shots ( AF is very slow )
      Samyang 50mm f/1.2 : Very sharp m4/3 lens, great for shallow DOF shots
      Olympus 60mm f/2.8 : Excellent m4/3 macro lens, very sharp and super light weight
      Almost all FF lenses are SOFTER than Olympus or Panasonic pro-grade m4/3 lenses. The whole reason why I own 8 Nikon FF lenses is to get a softer and more forgiving image than the super sharp m4/3 lenses. Sometimes you don't want to see every crack and pore in a person's face, so this is where the Nikon FF lenses come in. ( the same is true for Canon FF lenses ) These are the Nikon lenses I shoot with...
      Nikon 24mm f/2.0 : Good FF lens ( soft image compared to m4/3 lenses )
      Nikon 35mm f/2.0 : Good FF lens ( soft image compared to m4/3 lenses )
      Nikon 50mm f/1.4 : Good FF lens ( soft image compared to m4/3 lenses )
      Nikon 55mm f/2.8 Micro : Good FF lens ( sharp image )
      Nikon 85mm f/2.0 : Good FF lens ( sharp image )
      Nikon 105mm f/2.8 Micro : Good FF lens ( very sharp image )
      Nikon 135mm f/2.8 : Good FF lens ( sharp image )
      Nikon 200mm f/4.0 : Good FF lens ( sharp image )

      SewTubular Thank you. That is really nice list of lenses :) I've watched lot of videos here and on vimeo with GH5/4 and my favorite is Canon 70-200 2.8.

    • @SewTubular
      @SewTubular Před 7 lety

      Yeah, it's a good range...
      I originally owned the Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 ver I that I bought with a Panasonic GH3 camera when it first came out, but that lens suffers from "jitter" that made it impossible to get good looking hand-held video, so after two lens firmware upgrades I gave up and sold it. Today the GH5 IBIS would probably fix the jitter enough to make it usable, but the version II model of this lens does not have the "jitter" problem so it works with almost any m4/3 camera.
      Before I bought the Pana-Leica 8-18mm lens I was thinking of buying the Laowa 7.5mm f/2 m4/3 lens which is about half the price. The Laowa 7.5mm is a sharp lens, even at f/2.0, but it has crazy big lens flare when pointing into the sun, which is something I like to shoot from time to time. The Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 was my next choice in super wide angle, but it's hard to balance on a gimbal because it's pretty heavy. So in the end I bought the Pana-Leica, which is f/2.8 on the wide end, which is where I'm going to be using it with a gimbal.
      I bought the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 because I wanted a sharp interview lens that performed well at f/1.4. After researching this and other lenses to death, I went for the Sigma. ( it's also pretty cheap for it's speed ) It's a great lens for video, but the AF is slow for still photography.
      After buying the Sigma 30mm, I started to wonder if there was an affordable m4/3 lens in the 50mm range that was also fast. ( I love my Nikon 50mm f/1.4, but it's a terrible lens wide open ) Most of the FF 50mm f/1.4 lenses suffer from "coma" which creates a very soft and low-contrast image. The Zeiss OTUS and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lenses do not have this problem, so they are great wide open, but they are also pretty expensive. The Pana-Leica 42.5mm f/1.2 also does not have this problem but it's also super pricey. So I came across the new Samyang 50mm f/1.2 lens for m4/3 that had great reviews and was fairly cheap compared to everything else that was sharp wide-open. It's a really good lens for m4/3 work. You can shoot at f/1.2 and the image looks great. Sharp, contrasty, with very shallow DOF.
      With my Nikon FF lenses I chose lenses that were fairly fast that all have 52mm filter size, so I could share the same filters across all lenses. ( some I owned already and the rest I bought used from eBay )
      ...The bottom line for me is that you need to research your lens choices as much as you can before buying, and maybe even rent the lens if you can.

    how would you shoot slo motion with the gh 5? 50 fps full HD and 10 bit or 60 fps 4k in 8 bit? Pictureprofile in V-log. A lot of guys using the 60 fps and 4k instead of full hd and 10 bit. But i thought always using 10 bit should be the better decision?

    you didnt mention if it has no crop when shooting in 4k. i have the 32-100 which becomes a 70-200.
    at 4k with no crop it will be 32-100

    • @TomAntos
      @TomAntos  Před 7 lety

      There is crop when shooting in 4K because its a m43 sensor. So roughly 2X of full frame sensor

    • @thatsmyname9765

      why did panasonic say it has no crop at 4k? due to down scaling the 6k image to 4k

    I am trying to set up to do stop motion, but the GH5 just keeps shooting video. I have the dial to M and other function to the last stop motion dial circle setting. what am i doing wrong?? also, the cam keeps defaulting to 1250 iso and putting stabilizer on? i restarted it as well. it also keeps turning back from stop mo into time lapse when i hit the front.
    the front shutter sets to record video, but i can’t figure out how to get it back to stills as i think that may be the problem.
