- In this Episode we take a look at cameras for brick animation. With today's technology it's very easy and very in-expensive to create wonderful looking stop-motion animations. Any standard digital video/Web Cam camera that has PC/MAC connectivity can act as a camera.
Be sure your stop motion software can discover the cameras.
Recommended cameras for Stop-motion:
Digital 8 via/firewire
MiniDV via/firewire
Any Web Cam via/USB
DSLR via/USB (with compatible software ie: Stop Motion Pro, Dragon Stop Motion, AnimatorHD). - Jak na to + styl
This is awesome, thank you so much for uploading this. You've given plenty of advice on what to buy and what to use for brickfilm.
I loved what you said at the start of the video. This Monday I'm beginning a history of films class, and from what you said, I think it will be very helpful.
yaaay 3rd ep. these tutorials are really helpful, please keep making them!
You the man Doug~ Inspiring presentation... Thank bro!
oh thanks so much for touching on dslrs. just bought myself a t2i/550D. can't wait to see how you recommend I apply it to stop motion!
:D Magic Portal. Fond childhood memories.
Awesome. Thanks for the rundown :)
This is awesome!
Great tutorial. I look forward to your next one.
These are really helpful, thanks for putting them up :)
Haha thanks your brickfilm school got me into film and collecting film cameras...thanks lol !
Bravo!
Dangit, I haven't brickfilmed in forever, and I want to use my dad's DSLR. I will eagerly await your next tutorial!
These are really good
Hey Doug,
Thanks for the great video, really inspiring! My background is movie & TV production: mostly 35mm , some 16mm and very little video, so I come from old school, both motion picture & stop-motion projects. I appreciate that you included some talk about super 8 and the 16mm Bolex. I think far too many people these days are jumping right into digital videomaking and they do not understand the craft or art of filmmaking.
I'm still not sold on video, it just isn't as good as film.
YOU HELPED ME OUT SO MUCH THANK YOU!
Thanks, I'll look into it :)
FINALLY!
I LOVE THE MAGIC PORTAL
great info and insights! thanks for making it;]
Very good.
Another great video. I really loved the bit about the 16mm camera.
As for the Digital SLR camera, are you hinting at a HD stop motion project? ;)
oh wow ima first comment... your vids are somewhat of an inspiration to me since im wanting to be a stop motion filmmaker usually with star wars lego and sometimes eventually city lego.Keep making those videos there great. =)
@MrRagingAaron I had exactly your problem. If that is the case, then you can probably use the flash to light the scene before you take a picture. You press left on the arrow pad until the last option, and then you click. That was for my Olympus camera, though.
I really like your vids
dragon frame is awesome.
Really great video, you should do a episode 4, witch will go more in on the software
*Which
you can manually move it, some cameras you can tranfer the pictures with usb or take the memory card out itself onto a cheap adapter
nice job
Whenever I think of stop-motion, I think of King Kong's rampage on the top of the Empire State building
very helpful and informative video. did you ever make one on how to use a DSLR for stop-motion?
Hi cannedgravy, I loved the video and was greatly inspired by you to make brickfilms. I am now very interested and am wondering what the name was of that old bolex 16mm film camera in the Beginning of the tutorial. Can't wait for your next brickfilm! :)
cool
Very well done sir. I don't understand why someone might push the thumbs down button for your video unless they are some kind of douche.
loving these brick school things so far. What is a firewire by the way? I don't believe I have one but I've got okay so far.
The new laptops don't have Firewire. What would you recommend if you still have a Sony digital 8,, but can't use the firewire?
your awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yep i have a heck of a time with digital i have a tun of film cameras
My kids are really getting into this. Did you cover the SLR camera in another vid?
i just found my new favorite youtube channel
Sorry it's a little slow on uploads. I'm working to get it up and running again
Doug Vandegrift thats fine! I just discovered your channel and I'm just suprised you replied to my comment!
Used a Bolex in college!
I'm pretty sure I have the exact same type of super 8 camera you use in this video. Is it a Nizo s560?
because I love canned gravy haha
yes
thank you
A lot of schools years ago had actual filmmaking as part of the curriculum. Now of course it's way different. :(
Sucks how my HD camera (like the one you were holding in the end) cant be plugged into any stop motion program because it doesn't have "livecam" or something... :/ I just have to take the pictures, then import them and speed up the footage a little to get what i want.
the first webcam you showed that you hotglued a brick to, is that a Logitech QuickCam?
which dslr is that? any good recommendations?
Wow. I never thought about cameras that way. I love making stop motion too. You are right that it is a fading hobby. It's very sad but everyone gave up o it and went to gaming and x box stuff. It's kind of sad. This generation of stop motion is almost gone. Sadly. Only people with enough patience and mind still do it. Man, what a shame. I do like this video because you pointed out some stuff I never even thought about a certain way
what camera would you reccomend in general, like any camera
Do you think that the Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 is good for animating?
If you use a regular camcorder with flash memory, do you just use a USB input?
Do Fire Wire cables not now come with usb's at the end?
The digital SLR CAMERA,, can you tell us if it has a r/c or can it take a wireless r/c to take photos .I need a good stop motion camera with r/c shutter.. any recommendations will be greatly apreciated
@all4c4rnage First was on setting up, Second was on lighting, 3rd one was on walk minifigure walking, fourth is camera
my first brickfilms were made with a built in laptop webcam
If the camera blurs with the flash off try adding more light and defusing it with a sheet of paper.
I'm trying to find another camera in my house that work's with my stop-motion software. Because my quality's not the best. What would you recommend for a Mac?
Btw I have the same tripod! (I want a new one though).
@all4c4rnage Walking WAS part of the series.
@supernalyd3 I don't know about that software, just look at what it can do and google to see what others have to say. The camera I used I don't think works on a mac so I can't help you there.
how do you get those backgrounds? like the sky and clouds and stuff???
please answer
For my videos, I used Honestech Claymation Studio 3.0, and the accompanying camera. My computer was dying at the time, so the quality of the videos leaves a bit to be desired, but how does this program compare to others that you have used.
Yeah hes da boss
I swear i have that same tripod at 6:40
What is that webcam your using?
Now I use my iPod to brickfilm. I have this awesome app called Stopmotionstudio.
i have that same tripod
What's the model number of the Digital8 camcorder?
MonkeyJam is awesome.
I have a digital SLR camera and Stop Motion Pro. But I couldnt get the program to recognize the camera. It just kept showing up on my computer as an external drive. Is there a secret to doing it or an internal setting in the cameras? It's a Cannon BTW.
You cannot plug a firewire into a DSLR. you use a USB however you will need software like DragonFrame or StopMotionPro
yo whats the best video camera for lego stop motion
What is the best stopmotion sofrware?
I have a Logitech Quickcam webcam and i use that to shoot my movies.... are they good enough, plz respond
Hello, how are you? You talked about super 8, 16mm ... wouldn't it be possible to do it with a 35mm camera?
photographic camera
@kingofdarkness227 yeah but I swear the camera makes them look like that.
i use stopmotion studio on ipod anyway i use gimp with it
@WarnerBrikProduction It was the fourth.
u seem like a very nice person
How do you plug a FireWire cable into a camera like the Canon 500d?
How much is the HD camera in stores? Well, how much is the best cheap HD camera in stores now, I am using right now a 5 or 6 year old camera and need a new one seen because the mic is breaking and the focus is slowly not wanting to focus (Using the Canon PowerShot SD 700 IS Digital ELPH)
its funny how i am watching this and he pulls out the tri-pod, then i look back and see the same one in my room from my last video!!!!
amigo mio! eres un genio... please help me, how i look for de canon camera... the model??? the cameras name??? im form mexico ... i don´t know if im doing the apropied cuestions... i want to do a short film stop motion and im in the investigation process.
I LOVE MONKEYJAM
when is the new school episode coming out?
As far as a camera goes you do not need anything special. I use a Legitech pro 9000 which are fairly cheap. IT also has manual focus via the software and takes a photo at a press of the mouse button so I rarely need to touch my camera at all. Webcams are getting better and better and have the features I would want for stop motion. Just make sure things like follow face and auto focus are turned off.
@legostothemax yes but the walking wasnt part of this series but you are sot of right lol
Digital SLR or DSLR Which ones better
Is there any software that is free or VERY cheap, because I would love to get back into the stop-motion scene, but don't have $300 for Dragonframe. I CAN use iPhoto, but I want something that will let me take the pictures from my computer to avoid the camera shake from pushing the shutter. Do you know of anything like this? I know it's unlikely, but there's no harm in asking. Thanks.
How do u make the rain effect?
wich webcam do u use?
Microsoft computers have windows movie maker and I think macs have imovie. Both are free and work for stop motion work you just need to learn to use them.
Soorry, programs that i can use for that?
Can i plug it in in the hdmi hole to pc?
What is the best free stopmotion software
i have the digital SLR camera but the only problem is that my dad does not let me use it. if he ever came up to me and said wat do u want, i would say i wanted his camera.
seriously what is the BESt 30fps software for stop motion
@legostothemax its the 3rd
"Uuh!" xD
