Have to read, excited
Have not read it but I did read The Emigrants by Sebald and I loved it. It felt like you are travelling along a silk cloud in a slight dream. Never experienced anything like it.
woah woah woah moving this up in my reading queue. when the king has a new fav you know you gotta RUN!
Read it when it came out and I was half way through it when he died - just awful. The intimate tone made it feel like someone talking to you over a beer in a bar. It’s still in my top ten ever.
I read it! And I agree with you - it's brilliant. THANK YOU for your review! And that ridiculously long sentence you mentioned begins on page 236, in the middle of the page, starting with the words: "It seems unpardonable to me today that I had blocked off the investigation of my most distant past..."
Omg thanks for pointing out where it is! Glad you liked it!!
I love your videos. I'm going to put this on my tbr even though it doesn't particularly appeal to me. Sadly I don't have the same taste as most of the booktubers I love.
Best wishes with what you are reading. Up to page 931 of Count of Monte Cristo now. Happy reading.
I’m intrigued! And you loving a book this much a revelation.
I love your vids bro. Putting this on my tbr rn
On paper, your videos should probably not appeal to this (almost) 70 year old Nana BUT they DO in a big way. Despite your (cute) silliness, you always have some very smart things to say about the books when you boil it down to its essence. I have not read this one, but now will, I wonder if you have read The Unconsoled by Ishiguro. Also dreamlike and about memory and one man’s history. A lot of people hate it, by I absolutely love it. I heard Ishiguro speak about it which was intriguing and made me very happy to realize I did, indeed, “get” it! Cheers! 😊. PS I guess we are the only two people who understood This Other Eden!
Listening to the clip's description of Austerlitz also made me think about The Unconsoled, which I think is an underrated masterpiece.
@@kl-ge9bg I couldn’t agree more .. cheers!
Agree wholeheartedly with you . I was stunned when I read it recently . I would describe it as a story about a man who meets a man who tells a story, over several encounters, about meeting people with stories to tell. So what we have is a first hand account of what someone else said about what some other people said or did . So it's very form is held together by the shifting sands of memory and history . And it works so well because oral storytelling and art that is so digressive and evasive and compelling . Austerlitz and his tentative search for solid ground ...Patrick Modiano has the same tone and quality, if you've not read him ,trying to make sense of things through fragments and scraps
AUSTERLITZ?! AUSTERLITZ?!!!!
