  • With their respective NYFF59 Main Slate selections Bergman Island and The Worst Person in the World, Mia Hansen-Løve and Joachim Trier achieve new creative heights in their parallel trajectories as the preeminent European filmmakers of their generation. Both artists have spent the last 15 years interrogating, with great compassion, the moral and emotional crosscurrents that undergird human behavior, and their latest films refine these inquiries with an invigorating reflexive frankness.
The two writer-directors came together for a conversation about their influences and inspirations; their distinctively personal and philosophical approaches to cinematic storytelling; and the endlessly generative themes of romantic ambivalence and evolving self-knowledge that animate their new films.
NYFF Talks are presented by HBO.

I was there. My bosses at work, knowing how much I love movies, let me take two weeks off so I could go to NYFF. I saw a lot of movies that inspired me, but this talk and Ryusuke Hamaguchi's talk both revived my long lost desire to make my own films again.

Love both movies! Especially enjoyed the acting of Anders Danielsen Lie in both movies. Three creative minds that I all admire so much!

I'm here because I adore The Worst Person in the World and I'm sucking all the content I can about the film but Bergman Island wasnt in my most anticipated this season. Seeing how passionate Mia is about her love for Bergman I'd really like to see her film now. I mean I'll be watching it tonight.

Excellent, really in-depth discussion. I've only seen Bergman Island so far, but it really was worthwhile. Have to say Mia Wasikowska's performance was really moving and it set the whole film in a different light. I've been a fan of Mia Hanson-Love's films for a while. These two directors were fascinating to listen to. Also, good interviewer.

I watched Titane, Worst Person in the World, and Bergman Island back to back. I had this moment of self-conversation and ended my five-year-old relationship! So, seeing these two people together, connecting with each other really means something to me.

Yeah, its unbearable to watch 😉 The people in this business are constantly unsecure and need recognitions 24/7

Mia is literally my fav director and I loved Joackims films before, too, but "Worst person in the world" went up in my top 5 immediately - I'm so happy they put them together here because in my view they have a similar language which is so strong but also perhaps subtle to some people? I feel it, anyhow.
American independent stuff from like 10 years ago had vaguely similar feel to it but either the good stuff doesn't reach me anymore or it all went to shits? Happy that Mia and Joackims films are shown in cinemas in London rn, but v sad about what else is shown and being considered to be watchable...
Anders the actor is brilliant in all the films I've seen him in, too. Thank you all guys so much!

What Joachim said about Marguerite Duras, about those hidden women stories, really beautiful. Going to check out her work now. Thanks Joachim.

Can anyone confirm the last name of the French director that Joachim references at the beginning?

I'm curious why she calls Goodbye First Love her first film, what about All is Forgiven, one of my absolute favourites of hers, and also Father of My Children, weren't they both before?
Anyway, wonderful interview, very interesting to hear them bouncing off each other. Similar sensibilities. Beautiful sensibilities.

I actually think she says "third", just with a slightly sloppy pronounciation
