I don't go to sleep without having listened to Portuguese...I usually put headphones on and make myself listen for an hour a day. It used to be Brazilian, but I watched all the shows...now I do it with EU...total game changer!! I will continue...
I was thinking of combining my reading and listening because I use a website that I highly recommend. Jw.org which has so many encouraging articles and videos that are translated into 1028 languages, which are so useful especially during these times. It has the audio for some of the articles so I can read and listen. I also love rewatching the video about azulejos and about the wine so that I can fully understand what's being said.
Thanks for the tips Liz! I'm enjoying the NiT articles already (definitely a nice break from the news) It's now my homepage and I'll be trying to read an article every day from now on.
I'm watching an hour of a Disney movie each day in European Portuguese ...I speak Portuguese at the gym everyday, and they give me new words each day. Reading ...IDK...I got the language partner for each Thursday in my apartment!! YES, PLEASE MAKE MORE LISTENING VIDEOS!!!
A way I've found to cheat on myself when I feel too lazy to practice Portuguese (or simply forget to), is that I've followed multiple Portuguese news and culture accounts on Instagram, it forces me to at least read the heading and maybe the description while I'm scrolling, if there's a word I don't know, I copy and paste it in my phone's note app to write them all down later.
You really inspired me to start learning European Portuguese (much better than Brazilian Portuguese :)) Using Linguee and other apps to learn it. Obrigado pela ayuda!
@@TalktheStreets I just had a face palm moment because I spelled ajuda wrong. I don't know why I was thinking of the Spanish version of the word. Obrigado pela ajuda! There we go
That's surely a rare but also a perfect way to learn languages. I speak european portuguese and have a thailandese wife and we are starting to learn each others languages. Obviously we can't talk to each other in our native language but I hope we'll get there! Congrats to the Canadian couple for being able to do that, that's impressive!
No último dia do ano passado, estabeleci para mim mesma a meta de finalmente atingir o nível c1 em português. Este ano, quero finalmente atingir esse objetivo. Obrigado pela motivação.
In my case, I'm brazilian but, as you said, even though I'm an English teacher, the study never stops. What I reeeeally have to work on is the speaking, that's one of the reasons I created this channel. Your work really inspires me, keep it up, your videos are awesome!
For reading, I find Twitter very helpful. There is a "Translate" feature on most tweets, so I try to translate the sentence myself and then I use the "Translate" feature to check my work. I mostly follow Portuguese news outlets, but you can use any twitter account that tweets mostly in Portuguese. Of course tweets are bite sized, but the handy translate feature offers an instant way to check your work and learn new vocabulary. I check Twitter often throughout the day too, so even if I'm lazy and I don't do more structured practice, I can still get some sort of daily practice and exposure in. Hope this helps. Boa sorte.
I live in Portugal and have a friend in Brazil. We used to speak every night on ZOOM for one hour in Portuguese. Since the beginning of 2021 we decided that on alternate nights we would speak/write in Portuguese and English. It means that it is a win/win situation for both of us. We agreed to do this until travel to/from Brazil will be easier.
OMG...!😳 I’m working for Timor-Leste and your Portuguese tutor seems friend of my friend..! What a small world☺️ I’ll be in Timor next month. Anyway, I’ve been subscribing your video, and I love it so much. Thank you so much, and looking forward to watching next one!
Follow portuguese (news) accounts and try to read the texts underneath the posts in portuguese. After, use the ‘show translation button’ at the end to check if you understand everything and learn from that 😁
Thanks for great tips. I have been struggling to find time for the studies, but no more excuses. I am going to start following news (or Portuguese websites) in Portuguese both reading and listening. I remember you gave some good tv channel tip last year and even bookmarked it then.
Amazing idea Liz! I watch your videos everyday without fail! Even the ones I have watched a million times! They never get old and I hear something new each time! I have needed a framework to push myself to incorporate my practice so: Reading I have added the same website nit.pt as I had a scroll and thought it looked good to read as it wasn't too depressing! Listening I have added portuguese with leo as, although I am still A1 I will do the tip you said before in a video, to write down what I CAN hear in his videos! (Still waiting for Glória to arrive on Netflix in the UK!) Speaking I have added 2 options: 1. Voicenotes to portuguese family (my fiancé is portuguese so I am learning so I can speak to his family and today I made the brave move to send her a voicenote and it went great! so I want to do this more! 2. I will say something morning, lunch or evening in portuguese and progress to conversations as time goes on For writing, again I will use whatsapp!
Natasha you are an inspiration to everyone! What an amazing set of habits, I'm so proud of you. Let me know how it all goes. Are you on instagram? Send me your handle if you are!
Thank you for commenting, please report in the group!! I know how hard it must be to stay motivated when you are not able to come to Portugal yet, but also, its the perfect time to improve while we are locked down, so when you get here you will be in a better place!
Your speaking activity could be our reading activity 😝 I think I'll be doing the writing part. I'll maintain a diary of things that I did today and write at least 5 things and send it to a native speaker for corrections. That way at least my structure and sentence syntax will improve. I'll read that out aloud and keep my pronunciations intact too.
Thank you for these suggestions. I usually try to read Público in the mornings and grapple with just one article. But just recently returned to SAPO... which is a delight to read after the more intense language of Público. But I will try NiT now. It looks refreshingly different. I think when you get keep to one resource you get embedded with the linguistic style of that resource when in fact you need to embrace of styles and all levels of language. I am also going to try your podcast suggestion. I listened to one briefly and found it accessible but still challenging. As you say Bárbara has a wonderfully clear speaking voice. For writing, I might commit to posting in Portuguese on Facebook. My English friends might find it a bit pretentious but I do have Portuguese friends and have written in Portuguese when directing a post at them so I might go the whole hog now. If my English friends are interested in my post they will have to hit the translate button. Speaking is an easy one for me as just before Christmas, I found a Portuguese Conversation class - except I am the only one in it - during the 'confinamento' the tutor is going to come to my house as he has to pass by it anyway when he goes to pick up his children from school!!!
The podcast you recommended is amazing. I was looking for something like this for so long. Do you have any other recommendations for podcasts in European Portuguese?
Hi Liz! Your videos always make me want to study, especially when I'm not so motivated to do it! I would just have a question... What if we have a lot of material and resources and actually don't know where to start from? I'm stuck in this situation, I feel like if I can't do everything my study won't be complete... I speak 5 more languages other than Italian, my native language and I'm trying to keep pace with at least three of them... I would like to know if you've ever felt like me and if you have some advice to give me. Hugs 😘
It is definitely overwhelming to begin with. Have you attended one of my Speak Portuguese like a Pro classes? It's free and you can sign up here --> www.talkthestreets.com/speak-portuguese-like-a-pro it will give you a good grounding!

Atm I struggle to get the motivation for learning but I like to listen to PT music and listen to programmes in the background while I am working. My Fiancé is portugese but we don't talk alot in Portuguese at all really. Any tips to implement that into my day??
It's very hard to practice with a partner! You are best of finding a stranger to practice with, funnily enough it is less nerve wracking and you are less likely to give up. I don't teach my fiancee Portuguese, haha! Tips to implement what exactly, I didn't quite get your question?
@@TalktheStreets you actually answered my question... sorry this is what I was asking, how could I implement talking to my fiancé in Portuguese more on a day to day basis? But I am glad you find it hard too 😅
