When I was a kid one of these turned over at Fort Cumberland in Eastney, Portsmouth. I seem to remember there was a Dinky toy version. I don't know why the marines were messing with one- we got hauled into the guard room there one day for sneaking about. My friend's Dad worked for the Admiralty, so that helped get us kicked out nice and quickly! It's a museum or something now. They used to fire the guns- looked like a turret of HMS Daring (1950s).
I think Scammells are some of the coolest trucks in existence I have lot so M series US military trucks and a German Unimog the Scammells are as rare as hens teeth in the US!
@gritineye Historic Military Vehicles Forum? No, I've never used it. I was just curious as to how drive is distributed between the axles on that Scammel - open differentials would be as bad as (or perhaps worse than) two wheel drive.
Aaaaw happy memories of the old Explorer I restored from 'scrap' condition into a lovely old girl. Had to sell her when i lost my job. She was called 'LIBERATOR'!! I had the Gardner 180 in mine what engine you got in yours mate?
This is the Explorers reason for being, to quietly amble into war torn areas to recover damaged or broken down equipment.
Excellent stuff - my dream vehicle!!
