What an awesome piece of kit the Scammell Explorer is as shown here. What a shame Scammell trucks and multipurpose vehicles are no longer made.

Not fast, maybe 25-30mph downhill with the wind behind it but it more than made up for it with sheer grunt in the pulling power dept.

I was in the maintenance dept of Scammell Lorries There were two factories in Tolpits Lane Watford, The 'top' Factory made the all the truck inc the Scarab, the other factory was about two mlies west that made the trailers for the Scarab . This was the early 60s, what wonderful machines were made there, Until they were bought under the wing of British Leyland, it all seamed to go down hill from there. Some thieving scumbag nicked the sign where the Factory stood, Opposite was The Highwayman Pub.. Was the pub named after the Highwayman Scammell.. . Happy days working there.

If you listen closely you will hear a constant engine tone thats because supwr crawler gear was engaged it will climb just about any bank in that gear it 8s all about not causing wheel slip with 6 wheel srive and supwr low it can take on sreeper than 1 in 3

Back in the 1970s I rode with the guy who used an Explorer to pull the Big Top trailer for an Irish circus. On the lions steep hills he would sometimes put a brick on the throttle and get out and walk.
