I was lucky enough to have a meadows explorer a number of years ago. That wanderful petrol engine sure sounded the biz. Forgot the compressed air stearing hiss. This vid brings back so many memories, including as little as 4 miles a gallon, gulp !
Love that engine.and it's sound track.and at four miles to gallon.for it's engine size.and petrol not bad.big diesel lorries have similar mileage to that.could listen to that Rich sweet sound track for hrs.Love it.
It sounds like the Zenith carbs are not in sync. They were very reluctant "back in the day" to balance. However, attention to the Magneto, eng valve adjustment (using a "clock gauge" and balancing / sync the carbs, made those Scammell's pull like a train. Fitting needle roller based carb to throttle pedal linkages gave wonderful throttle control. A unit was based in the Thumier region in Aden, and it's cross-country performance had to be seen to be believed.:;) C.D. steering was very clever.
Has anyone modernized one of these engines by fitting electronic ignition and modern fuel injection system instead of those carbs.it would have more power and better mileage?

If I'm ever in a position to own an explorer I'd probably have a Gardner 6 cylinder in it but the Meadows is just such a great soundtrack.

That engine does sound superb especially where the camera is on top of the cab.

Nice one Bernard.
Great to see great to hear
Scammell = 👍🏻
Yes, like a tractor but with a leaf spring between the pivot and the axle to allow some vertical movement.
