    Wow. this was by and far, the most calm guest panel Bill has ever had. Able to calmly debate and explain counter points without raising voices or resorting to rhetoric. In the modern world where everyone else seems to argue by shouting louder sound bites, this was so refreshing damn near brought a tear to my eye.

      +Mistress Morrigan It was a good panel. All good people. A calm Brit, a democratic black guy, grandma Leslie Stahl, and a pretty mild mannered comedian. Leads to good discussion, and then you've got Lawrence Wright. Makes for a great panel and a nice lower key week where a good amount of topics is discussed CALMLY.

    I'm a Brit and I'm really pleased Obama is offering his opinion, which is that Britain should stay in the European Union. He's not threatening anyone in the way that Charles Cooke said, he merely said that if the UK wanted its own separate trade deal with the US it would take a lot longer to sort out than people think. The real reason why rightwingers like Charles Cooke want the UK to leave the EU is they hate the social policy rules we implement from the European Union, which are designed to prevent exploitation of workers (like the Working Time directive, which states that no-one is forced to work more than 48 hours a week, except police, paramedics, doctors etc). They'd love to have a UK where they can work people into the ground and take any rights off them they can.

    • @sarfaraz.hosseini
      @sarfaraz.hosseini Před 8 lety +1

      +Marky Mark That's not the case at all. President Obama wants the UK in because the US wants a powerful pro-American, free market anti-Russian voice within the EU. Also, the UK is perfectly capable of instituting workers rights without the EU. Jeremy Corbyn would love the UK to get out and he's no right winger, the EU has devastated Greece and at one stage dismissed their elected government, it subsidises farmers who dump their produce on poor African countries, and it sends large trawlers to fish their oceans dry.

    • @TheMarkos1982
      @TheMarkos1982 Před 8 lety

      +Sarfaraz Hussein Merchant I agree with you about Greece, but the EU would've done that with or without the UK being part of it. The UK probably gets about 50% benefit from being a EU member - all you can do is take the best parts of it (the social benefits, workers protections) and try to help improve the rest. Outside of that oversight, the Conservatives would slash and burn all of our social rights.

    • @enhilz
      @enhilz Před 8 lety

      +Marky Mark The Conservative government's official position is to stay IN the EU, not to persuade the electorate to vote out. They've spent quite a large sum of taxpayer money sending leaflets to campaign for an in-vote. Besides, there are plenty of left-wing critiques and cases for leaving the EU, so I don't think that's a fair appraisal of the "leave campaign." If leaving the EU was a corporate plot, I wonder why all the big corporations, banks, the loan shark IMF and the international political class all are opting to support the in campaign. Also, considering how much sway special interest groups and corporations have over Brussels, it's hardly a body wishing for a workers paradise. There are legions of lobbyists, so don't tell us how great and pure EU institutions are lol. If America could get a trade deal with Australia in ten months, it is not unreasonable that America could work out a deal with the worlds 5th largest economy in a similar span of time.

    The "grandmother theory" sounds fascinating. Generational knowledge
    continually transferred down through the ages, from those who know
    better (from experience), to those who will then benefit from this
    experience themselves.

      it is interesting..but dont forget all grand mothers arent good people..some warp the minds of young children with negativity, racism, and the like.....so it not always a good thing to have the older generation passing on their "knowledge" to impressionable children

    • @KennethMeyerson
      @KennethMeyerson Před 8 lety

      +v griffith True, but in the aggregate life must possess a critical mass of positive, liberal, and supportive adherents if it is to remain sustainable. It's not that what you describe can not and does not happen, it's that this is not the majority case. Knowledge passed down through the "bad grandmother" path does not impart any life-skills that can be considered 'adaptive ' and will eventually die-out due to attrition/dilution.

    Carter was also the last president to raise interest rates effectively killing inflation, getting rid of bad debt, and giving people who save small amounts of money (poor people) a meaningful return on their savings. He also was the last president to put the country on a path of increasing tax revenue and shrinking deficits. He walked, in the open, from his inauguration to the white house up pennsylvania avenue out in the open without any cover. That is the definition of ballsy.

For some reason, Americans never mention us for example on national and world news a few years ago regarding vaccine shortage. US had a shortage. Several European countries shared with them and also Canada. The difference was Canada supplied three times as much as all those countries put together. On news, they thanked everyone of those countries but not Canada. I see this stuff all the time. It just doesn't make sense. We are the only other country on the same continent.

Then Readan made a deal that the contras could sell cocaine to the Iranians in exchange for small arms, and as part of the deal Reagan sold the latest fighter jets to Iran. No one talks about this except the movie “The Endkess Summer”, where they went and surfed where the cocaine and guns were exchanged. And they called it Alis’ bay. My mother passed away when I was 11 months. My father kinda lost it after she passed. My grand parents lived only a few houses apart, and I was raised my both sets of my grand parents. Many will say "oh sad you lost your mother so young"... I know no difference... It's all I knew. However I was so lucky to have all my grandparents as my parents. I never felt un loved and I received the wisdom of my grandparents. Sure I wish everyday I knew my mother, but many also haven't. I'm a lucky man none the less. She gave me my life. They gave me a the wisdom to understand why. I may have lost my mother, but I also have a unique point of view because I did. It's called life. Enjoy the day. Treat everyone with respect, especially when they don't deserve it. Like Bill I am an Atheist, so I have no belief I'll meet my mother in heaven. I'm just grateful I had the coolest grandparents a guy could hope for. Although... I'm still waiting for the baby elephant my grandfather said was a birthday present when I was five... Charles Cooke is dead wrong. The parliament does not give away to unelected people. Everyone who makes decision and laws in EU are elected. There no unelected people in EU that makes laws, it is ether the European counsel (made of ministers) or the European parliament, elected people from all countries.

      +HansDelbruck53 She's very pretty for an old lady. Sometimes young people mass together everyone over 40 or 45--but they will fin d out there is a huge difference between the wrinkles you start to get betwqeen 40 and 50, and the complete change in your body in youe late 50s, 60s, 70s, when the musculature supporting your face, neck, chest, arms and legs just disappears because the youth hormones are simple gone.
      Literally we are skin and bones and some fat depending on heredity! It's where people get frail and delicate, and try getting those awful cheekbones to hold the skin out there--but look at their profile--from the side--for a shocker! We need to appreciate the aging because the alternative is losing them altogether.
      And we can't replace these people who lived through historical events--the Stock Market Crash and Depression kids are all but gone now, and WWII fighters as well. Vietnam vets are committing suicide at very high rates like 1 per day? Learn all you can from the oldsters you know, because they will take all that knowledge with them and you can't get their personal experience in books. And don't worry about their appearance--it's the most difficult thing imaginable to see an old person staring at you from your mirror in this visual age. You may look just like them in 2 or 3 decades! Learn to love those boney chins and cheeks, the age spots where the sun hits your forehead. Your nose and ears keep growing.....to match your waist, while your chest sags (guys worse than women) and your butt just disappears completely, leaving you sitting on your hip bones! And don't even think of the skinny legs that are epidemic......there is nothing you can do about that.

    It is funny, but I do not remember any English conservatives getting outraged over Obama's statement regarding Scottish independence. He said: "We obviously have a deep interest in making sure that one of the closest allies that we will ever have remains strong, robust, united, and an effective partner." It seems that the term "sovereignty" did not apply in that case! According to the text of the Declaration of Independence, the USA declared its independence from an illegitimate, tyrannical and unelected Hanoverian monarch and, therefore, there is no real irony in Obama's statements. Charles Cooke is clearly someone who has made a career for himself by convincing people in certain circles that smugness wrapped in a transatlantic-Oxbridge accent can somehow pass for sophistication and wit.

    Interesting comment from the Brit about Brexit being an issue of giving up sovereignty, considering that the UK is a very willing participant with the USA in the negotiations on the TTIP (US-EU trade agreement). That has the very real potential of countries ceding their national sovereignty to a global trade tribunal appointed by transnational corporate interests.

      You don't pay much attention to anything do you? Plenty of Scottish actors and comedians have done very well. Sean Connery and (one of my favorites) Craig Ferguson to name just two. Yes the RAF did a hell of a job but without the oil, bullets, food, parts, etc etc etc it would have been a lot harder. Did you really think all those resources were made in England? I know a bit about history so believe me I'm not saying we "Saved your Asses" just we provided a hell of a lot of help. It didn't hurt that we basically took over the Pacific Campaign and fought the Japanese almost single-handed. If the Germans had been more serious about their rockets and jets it might have gone much differently. Oh and you don't have ridiculously dumb people in power? One of the biggest problems we have comes from those Puritans you guys booted out. And also we are a young nation so yeah sometimes we do dumb things but there are those of us who fight against the stupidity. I could name quite a few stupid things the UK has done. Neville Chamberlain comes to mind. Or the Falklands.

      The Falklands wasn't stupid that was an invasion that we repelled.
      Yes, the US was a huge help in the fight against the Nazis but that's because it was a WORLD war, everyone had skin in the game, don't think you're the only ones who helped.
      There's more that unites our two nations than divides us and yet we can't get past this petty argument of who helped who during the war. We were each part of a huge worldwide coalition against facism, let's not forget that.
      I have great love for my American cousins, why must we fight like bickering children when we agree on basically everything?
