Here's one for you, my front yard (2500sq ft) is a mix of both zoysia and St. augustine. I asked an expert on lawns if one grass would over take the other. He said eventually the zoysia would take over the yard from the st. augustine. That was thirty years ago. Today, it's still a stalemate. Go figure...

Zoysia should take over. But you might have great growing conditions for St.augustine, and that is causing it to stick around.

@@bettercallchadd Thanks for the reply, Chadd. I live just north of Atlanta. Most people are amazed I have St. Augustine that does grow! Unlike Florida and their sandy soil, we have mostly a clay based soil. Great for zoysia!

I just bought a new house and it has St. Augustine, as did my previous home. I lived in the same house for 34 years that had St. Augustine, and I grew to absolutely hate it. Between the thinning (because of the shade), and the fungus every year, I vowed to never have St. Augustine again. And then, I bought a new home that had…you guessed it, St. Augustine! But this St. Augustine had never been cared for and has just as many weeds as grass. So I’m thinking about totally replacing my grass and my landscaper recommended going with zoysia.
But after seeing this, I think I’m going to go with the grass that I know best…and that’s Bermuda! That’s what I grew up with and that’s what I know about. I’ve always loved it. It has pretty much no problems (unless your lawn is shady), therefore, I think I’m just going to go back with Bermuda. I love it. What would you go with, Chadd, if you had your pick of any turf?
One question, Chadd. I read something that said sometimes zoysia needs to be mowed with a reel mower. Is that true? And if it is true, does it need to be mowed with a reel mower all the time or just sometimes? And if just sometimes, why not all the time?

Going with what you know best is a great option!! If I had my choice, I would go with St.augustine. I know it so well that for me, it's the easiest to maintain and identify issues.
I thought you needed a reel mower, but the University of Florida says you can use both. You will need to be mow probably 2 to 3 times a week to keep a clean cut a rotary mower.

@@bettercallchadd: What’s your recommended kind of Bermuda? I’m in sunny Texas, where it gets 100+ most of the time in July and August. Most of the prettiest yards around me that are Bermuda look like they are some kind of tiff Bermuda. They aren’t mowed super short like a golf course, but they are beautiful.

The previous owner of my property here in central Florida has zoysia in one portion of my lawn with the balance st. Augustine, about 500sq ft in the middle of 2800 total sq ft. I use a chemical detacher on all my lawn plus micro nutrients. Middle of summer I put down 6-6-6 across the lawn. So far so good. I do water the zoysia and additional day.

A blend of grasses is not always a bad thing!!! They grasses will grow where they are the most strong.

I have Zoysia St. Aug. mix, not the Zoysia of slowly taking over everywhere. Is there anyway to reverse this? Maybe mowing the grass a little taller? I hate Zoysia, it send like it's roots grow deeper than St. Aug. because it's getting all into my raised beds, whereas St. Aug. barely had gotten into them and it's 100 times easier to remove.

It absolutely is!!! You really need to be a yard person to have consistently nice zoysia!!
