  • In this video I try to explain why Sim Racers often seem angry and why sim-racing forums and comment sections are often so delightful !
    In the background we are playing Assetto Corsa With the Oculus Rift full PC and kit list is listed below this video :)
    Hope you enjoy this and found it interesting let me know in the comment section under the video what other subjects you would like me to comment on and butcher.
    Hope you guys don't mind the titles, with luck I'm walking a fine line keeping them on the topic but also making them such that we capture more wandering CZcams viewers !

    I also think that a lot of sim racers come from a background of playing racing games with their mates and thinking their the fastest thing since Schumacher, and then they jump into a sim and realise that every dog and their grandma is faster than them, and that makes them REALLY ANGRY.

  • @alexberthgen1962
    @alexberthgen1962 Před 6 lety +16

    the most annying thing i've noticed, and im very new to this, is that people seem to compare games vs games and get into arguments about which game is the most "realistic" and which ones arent even "simulators".
    What people need to do is to compare each game to drive a real car on a real track with the same setup and conditions as in the game and only then can you compare.... Which pretty much nobody is able to. And even then like you said it depends on what wheel/pedals you're using in the sim aswell as how the force feedback is set up.
    TLDR; the whole fighting about which game is a Sim and which games is a Simcade is really stupid since pretty much no-one can make a valid comparisson between game and reallity.

      I agree with you on this point. I bought a promising early access game that later went free to play not much later and it just became so toxic that just stopped playing the game. The anger really came out inside the community when the developers denied everything that others had proof of the cheating and other wrongdoings from other people who just wanted to play their game. What happened later is everyone left the game. The forums got so stupid their public relations suffered so bad that their publisher just pulled their plug. I am glad that racing sims have some issues but it's a fair game win or lose.

      Dirt 4 is not that bad , its just annoying following on from dirt rally all they needed to do was more tracks + rip off RBR and it would have been 100x better in my opinion. VR would have also helped given how good that was in DR as well.

    • @Ph1sic
      @Ph1sic Před 6 lety +11

      GamerMuscleVideos But Dirt4 was never meant to have the same realism as Dirt Rally? Thats why callsigns hate against D4 is mostly irrational. Its like the difference between Forza Horizon and Forza Motorsport. Also fuck the people that complain about every sim that is not iRacing.

    • @randomcallsign

      That's not an issue regarding simracing, but rather mismanagement from codemasters regarding of what the physics are and what the game is going to be in terms of content.

    good video as always, love a sim racing "rant", I think money is another factor, if you have financially invested in something that is rather expensive anway + hundreds of hours you would be more passionate and more likely to have internet arguments with other random people who have spent a lot of money on pretend driving, me as a budget sim racer (g920,playseat challenge, budget PC) ive still invested about £1k in this hoppy so damn right I'm going to argue with someone online about it!

    @JELB1960 Před 6 lety

    Liked.
    You make a lot of good points. Of particular interest to me is how you pointed out that, if you're dialed into one sim and then switch to another you are/were also dialed into - without changing hardware - the subtle differences in physics and tyre behavior modelling will become apparent. Depending on what two sims you're switching between of course. So...
    What does everything, with experience switching between AC and iRacing, think? Not a good idea? I just got AC and was thinking of renewing my iRacing membership to race with it as well. Maybe I shouldn't though. As it is I struggle to be a mid-pack racer.

    Recently sort of an opposite situation happened to me for the very first time: I was playing DiRT4 (and mostly sucking at it), then I went off and played Assetto Corsa for a couple of hours (I first started playing both sims sort of around the same time). When I came back to DiRT4 after that, suddenly I was racing a lot better. I know they're very different sims and they focus on completely different aspects, but somehow some inner part of the driving experience stuck out, and I genuinely learned something from that whole experience. I was really awestruck by that...

    I used to argue about racing games. I've discovered that arguing about politics is far more rewarding, satisfying and fun.
    Im not a sim racer though anyway. I love driving games, but i also love other types of video games.
    Maybe an expert can answer this. I Don't know why this is but although i think Assetto Corsa is more realistic and has much more going on with the tyre model, i sometimes feel that Project cars actually feels more instantly natural and reminiscent of real world driving. I feel this more with the street cars, specially at lower speeds. But i do still feel that at high speeds Assetto Corsas tyre model is far more detailed and realistic.
    My wife wouldn't be interested in racing games, but i could bet money that if i stuck her on Project cars she would be able to relate it to real driving and very quickly start to get a car round the track okay. But if i stuck her on Assetto Corsa i think it would take her some hours before she could comfortably get one of the cars round a track.

    • @GamerMuscleVideos

      I quite like the T300 as a starter wheel - amzn.to/2x2PxwH
      Or G29 if you want cheaper - amzn.to/2wv7OkK
      Both work fine to get into Sim-Racing and then normally people upgrade pedals , shifter and other stuff as they get more into it.
      As for games I think the best value for money sims at the moment are, Assetto Corsa and Dirt Rally , you can try RaceRoom for free as well and Live for speed has a good demo.
      So its probably around £150-£250 to really get into sim-racing most of that cost coming from the wheel , sometimes you can get a wheel on Ebay for cheap though or find a person that will sell you there old wheel cheap.
      Whats nice with the Wheels though is that if you buy new you get the warentee and typically you can sell them to close to what you pay for them, I had a G25 for 5+ years and then sold it for more than half its original price.

I actually used to hate Assetto until I bought it the other day and gave it a fair shake. But that doesn't change the fact no one cares about R3E. I try to start a conversation about the game and people either haven't played it in 2 years or think its iracing. Hopefully one day R3E will get its chance in the sun.

      I give it a chance every other week... I think the DTM cars and 90's DTM cars feel & sound great. But there is still something off with the FFB (especially when going into drifts). Never really got comfortable with it - including major changes the last 12 months. Mostly stick to AC and Pcars 2, both have a very good mix of complex physics (especially tyre physics) and rich detailed FFB.

    Yeah, sometimes I become angry. Very angry. I'm definitely not a fast sim racer and this is an obstacle for me to participate in online sim racing champs. So I participate in public races, especially in AC and PC sometimes, and more rarely in RRRE and Automobilista. So after the qualification, I usually find myself between fast drivers (usually first 5-10 places on the grid) and those crasher fucktards, or even behind a couple of them. And then the race always becomes the struggle. I'm trying to catch up those fast drivers (and I can't because I'm not fast and my setup is usually quite shitty) and to overtake or dodge the drivers who cannot drive just more or less decent or even try to push you out from the track.
    So there are three groups of online racers for me. Fast racers who usually disappears seconds after start. Fast drivers who fast only in qualification and catalyze the accident at the first cornerю. And crashers.

    Every racing game has a learning curve, that curve is based on how the Dev studio wants their "game" to be played. Wheel and controller setting can make or break your personal experience. That doesn't make them bad games though, contrary to popular opinion. Even a controller setup can make two games feel completely different . Pcars for example is unplayable with the default setting for controller and wheel, in my opinion. And then factor in the car you are trying to race with. Default setups in Pcars are trash on anything you drive. Small tweaks can however transform that experience into one of pure joy. This goes for Assetto Corsa Rfactor 1/2 and even Iracing. The fact is people expect it to just run to their standards out of the box all to often. Many of us know others who play more than one sim and have figured this out and can adapt, others don't. My first actual sim racing game was Rfactor and my second wheel was for RFactor. My first was That stupid 360 game with Kudos for currency, sorry can't think of the name atm. That experience almost ruined me from ever trying another wheel. I'm sure similar experiences happen to others in similar ways. We spend ALOT of money on this hobby and when we don't get what we feel is our moneys worth we get angry for buying into another crap game. Some just walk away and never look back while others feel they must vent, while the rest of us are determine to make it work. Instant gratification is what I feel the real issue is here. People want everything to be what they think it should be rather than what it actually is and will refuse to make any effort or spend any time to get or make it better.

    I think that PCars is the most near to life racing simulator around, broken cars aside lol.
    I think they have a great foundation with their physics engine and even just the look of the game and the way they model their cars just looks the most authentic compared to others. I think that if SMS was as big as like Turn10, for example, and had as much money and same goal they would have something amazing. Hopefully PCars2 will be the nice improvement it needs and also the next iteration after.

      [TN] Strikeman From what I’ve driven, PC 2 is the most realistic looking. GTS looks like a movie not “real life” and AC generally looks like garbage. I always use the “realistic” setting on PC 2 where it’ll give me traction control on the cars that should have it. I just bought all the AC dlc so I’ll give it a better test than just 30 mins (an actual nightmare when trying to use a game pad)

    I liked Agassi's hair back in the 90's. Good video but I would have to say most gamers are angry now regardless of what genre they play in. Could anyone recommend a good racing wheel for either Xbox or PC. I can't decide between Fanatec, Thrustmaster, or Logitech. I like the look of Thrustmaster's newly announced wheel but have concerns with their quality and support. Logitech seems to be the cheapest price and Fanatec seems to be the most expensive of the three. Thanks.

    They are not angry, they are passionate about their hobby. They are also(maybe not experts), but well above your average gamer in terms of knowledge&experience about their hobby. All that and you are going to get some pretty strong opinions thrown around, especially on the internet. (essentially it's a variation on the PCMasterRace vs ConsoleNoobs war)
    Where some genuine grievance might come into play is from despite being part of the group most dedicated and invested in this activity, the general market generally caters to other groups first before them. My 2.4 cents.

    my biggest issue with all of sim racing is i can't stand 90% of ffb implementations. i can't get the feel of a car drifting with it doing effects with the steering wheel, put some vibration motors on pedals and make it the standard way feedback is handled. i have a better clue of what a car is doing with an xbox controller then with a wheel...

  • @andrewrogers1652
    @andrewrogers1652 Před 6 lety

    I'm not sure about others but the only thing that 'angers' me is when I get crashed into and it's simply because of the effort put into each race before even racing. Learning the track, lapping consistently then making setup changes, lapping again, more changes etc etc, it all takes time and effort, when you then race and get crashed into on the first lap because someone forgets the race isn't 3 laps long and dives you from 4 car lengths back I think it's understandable to be annoyed with that person. I'm not fussed with the "who's sim is better" argument, everyone likes different things, at least we all like racing.

  • @adambarrs92

    I think the best way to gauge realism in sims is compare lap times to real world times. Do some research about a particular lap, the car and the setup and see how close you can get. If you're beating world record times then its not that realistic and if you're way off pace then it probably is quite realistic. Physics cant be compared unless you drive the car irl which you will most likely never do so is pointless (unless they are way out like forza or gt sport etc.).
    Out of all the sims, it's always pc2 I go back to, its the best do it all imo.

    • @GamerMuscleVideos
      @GamerMuscleVideos  Před 5 lety

      The problem with comparing laptimes is that there are tons of ways to make a sim / game car match real life times that are unrealistic.
      Sims are also way esear than real life in the way that the conditions don't change as much and that there are no conciquences. So in a SIM you can just do things over and over , run lines real drivers would not risk or just drive in a way that would be bad for the car / tires. You can also set SIM cars up in ways they never would in real life.

    • @adambarrs92
      @adambarrs92 Před 5 lety

      @@GamerMuscleVideos yea I suppose, you dont really run the risk of killing yourself haha so you can drive like as much of a tool as you want.
      I guess the whole realism thing with sims is a bit of a flawed subject to begin with. As long as things such as proper ffb, tyre models, setups and scenarios are actually simulated with a decent physics model, that's all we can ask for I suppose.

  • @Aliceintraining
    @Aliceintraining Před 6 lety

    honestly, none of the modern "sims" really are sims though, mostly because of the following,
    1, lack of proper tire rack feel though the wheel.
    2. lack of lateral acceleration force.
    3. lack of transitive acceleration.
    4. lack of road induced oscillation
    5. lack of appropriate environmental heat/humidity.
    6. lack of appropriate protective gear.
    7. lack of the defining sounds.
    because of these problems, even if they physics where correct, it would not matter, because of the way everything else is presented.
    lastly, your voice is sexy enough that its not a problem to hear you for 15 min :po

    • @GamerMuscleVideos
      @GamerMuscleVideos  Před 6 lety

      I agree obviously no simulator is perfect - Even the best simulators, it does not stop them from being a simulator. The word "simulator" does not mean perfect or near perfect replication of all aspects of reality or a given task , it just means "simulator" in that it "simulates" certain things. Mind you there are some crazy dental simulators out there that are crazy close to reality.
