2014 tundra Hard start or long crank time - TSB PCM update

  • This tundra has been acting up for a while and the customer was unable to identify the issue. The customer had replaced the coolant temp sensor and Fuel pump but the issue remains. The problem is a long crank time or hard start after the truck has been sitting for a while and especially when starting in the morning.
    What we find is an calculation error for the fuel alcohol content. There are multiple service bulletins and multiple PCM software updates for this concern. One of the TSBs even require a new fuel pump to be installed.

    I had this TSB done on my 2017 tundra. They replaced the fuel pump and calibrated the ECM. Two years later it started doing it again. I got toyota involved because they wanted to charge me for the whole thing which was around 1300. They dropped the price I paid to have the pump and ECM recalibrated.. got the truck back and the fault is back again all within 72 hours. I love toyotas. What the hell?! Now they want the truck back to start a case and have their senior techs work on it.

      The next one I get in the shop I’m going to look at the calibration and see if flex fuel can altered. We don’t have e85 in my area so we don’t really need the option or the calculated ethanol value. If I could turn flex fuel options off it would solve the issue.

    Thanks so much for the video. Owner of a 2016 Sequoia Flex Fuel with a hard start (alternator and battery are good). so guessing this MAY be the issue. It isn’t throwing any CELs but maybe there are codes in there I need to get read.
    Do you think that the fuel pump change is a requirement? It was done in that trucks instance (just before your workflow) but feels like an odd swap if it’s an ECU reFLASH issue. And people are saying it is coming back anyway months later with the change and flash (just reading other comments).

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  Před 5 měsíci +1

      We have done many vehicles with just the flash and none have come back with issues. My guess would be the fuel pump causes the truck to run lean at times and the ECM thinks alcohol content is higher than it was previously.

    I heard you mention a snap on scanner tool at the beginning of the video. Have you tried to reset the density with the snap on tool or do you use tech steam every time?

      The Snapon didn’t have the function at the time of filming but is on the release list for upcoming update. I haven check to see if it is available now that my Snapon tools have 23.4 software. I have a truck in the lot right now waiting for the update so I can test it out and see if the reset is available.

      @@ThePracticalMechanic that would be great if you could let me know. I had the new fuel pump installed this spring and it didn't help the extended cranks/rough start. I'm tired of fighting with the dealer to reset the density and fuel trim like the TSB says to do. It's getting cold here now and starts are getting worse.

    I’ve got a 2012 Flex fuel Sequoia with the same issue. I visited the dealer and asked in the service department if they had run into this with flex fuel Sequoias. He said they did and that only by running through diagnostics could they determine the exact problem. This made sense to me. He said usually it entailed dropping the fuel tank and replacing the fuel pump and then reflashing the ECM. When I asked about a ballpark estimate for the cost of the repair, he again said without diagnostics it would be a guesstimate, but that this procedure would cost from $2200-2500 to perform by Toyota service. I’ve been living with this for 2 years now, and trying to justify the expense over just living with the problem. In your opinion, what would you do and what suggestions could you help me with? I’ve been looking for someone that went into detail explaining the problem and the procedure and ran into your you tube video here. It is an excellent video, well made, and explains what I suspect is going on with my Sequoia. Thank you so much!

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  Před měsícem

      I just had a sequoia in the shop acting up. The alcohol data showed 60% even though a fuel sample showed 10%.
      A reflash alone did not and would not fix it since the fuel pump was actually bad.
      The fuel pump was providing about 10psi less than it was supposed to. After replacing the fuel pump along with the reflash the vehicle has been flawless.
      These fuel pump are expensive but I think our repair cost was around $1500-1600 for pump, seal, flash, reset alcohol content 3 gallons fuel and relearn.

      Southern Colorado. Any dealership can perform this and some independent shop will have the programming equipment. Most shops will have a scan tool that can reset the alcohol value so the truck is easy to start again. The values will likely drift again until the updates are performed.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  Před rokem

      I wish Toyota gave more information in the service bulletin on why the fuel pump is needed. I suspect the intermittently the fuel pump is delivering lower fuel quantity to the engine, and this may be happening after a fill up, which is triggering the vehicle to relearn an incorrect value. the initial service bulletin did not require the replacement of the fuel pump. It was only a software update. I’m suspecting that they still had some small revisions to make on the software, but realized that the fuel pump was the primary cause.
      I have two pumps on order from Toyota and our parts guy informed us that they have five or six more on order. We’ve been given an estimate of two weeks to two months to get them. I have not attempted to source these fuel pumps from a different dealer .

      @@ThePracticalMechanic. May it be that the smart sensor is inside the fuel pump and that they hope this resolves the problem. It seems like there is no fix for this problem? Have you found out any additional info? There is no reason to change a perfectly fine fuel pump other than changing the sensor which is the cause of this mess.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  Před rokem

      It shouldn’t cause a p0308 since that is cylinder 8 misfire. There is a slight chance that the computer is counting more misfires on 8 after it starts up because of the excess fuel but unlikely.
      If the misfire is happening all the time you may have other issues. May need to test compression, injection pulse, spark, etc.

      I’m not sure is there is a factory location for a block heater on these. If not you can probably install one of the block heaters with a pump into a heater hose.
      I don’t like the radiator hose options as much because you waste energy heating the radiator as well.

      As far as I know it’s not a recall so it will likely be customer pay unless covered under warranty. Best to call local dealer with vin number to see if you are covered. The pumps are currently on back order.

    I have a 2015 tundra that i took in for the service bulletin for this exact problem. They replaced the fuel pump and did a reflash. That fixed the problem but the issue came back shortly after but unfortunately for me I was over the 80K mile mark so I would have to pay for this repair from what I was told. After watching this video I see there is yet another software update and hope that it would fix this problem but I just don't want to have to pay big bucks to the dealer only to have this problem yet again. Has that owner had any more complaints about this issue or is this THE fix? Also, if you are close to Georgia, i'd gladly bring you mine to fix, I like how thorough you are with trying to figure out and resolve the problem.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  Před 8 měsíci

      If you recently had the flash done they should have installed the latest file but it is possible to install the older one if they used the first TSB to get the file number.
      You should have a warranty on the repair and if they didn’t flash to the latest file they should do it under warranty. Most repairs have a 12k/12 month warranty.

      I didn't pay anything because it fell under the service bulletin. The problem came back but i replaced a coolant temp sensor and so far the truck runs as it should. So the bulletin could have fixed the original problem but I also had another is my guess.@@lcotto2064

      @@lcotto2064 I just had my 2015 with 120K miles have the same issue. My local Toyota dealer claims they couldn't find the issues. IMO they really didn't try. They charged me $50 to tell me my battery was good but I told them from the start the battery was good and only 3 months old. I bought my truck from this dealership and I have always serviced my truck at this dealership.
      The fix to the problem is a software upload and the fuel pump needed to be replaced. Cost me around $1100 to fix.
      My local independent mechanic correctly diagnosed the problem just by describing the problem.

    Nobody is using more than 15%, I would have thought it would be easy to reflash with a top limit of 15%. I wonder if government regulations prohibit manufacturers from choosing the easy pathway.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  Před rokem

      They are probably required to produce a certain number of “lower emission” vehicles to keep the govt happy.
      On the Chevrolets you can disable it with many different tuning programs. Or you can even wire in a real flex fuel sensor and change the programming in the ecm so it knows to use the real sensor instead of the virtual sensor. Most of the newer 2016+ Chevrolets have gone back to a real sensor instead of a calculation.
      Toyota is less experienced in the flex fuel market so they may have some issues until they add a real sensor.
      Stay safe and warm this week as the weather is turning and have a wonderful holiday weekend.
