  • In this much anticipated installment, I employ my skills as a professional Architectural designer to critically examine and critique the newly released Origin 890J Super Yacht. This video is not meant to be negative, but is instead meant to provide positive feedback while viewing the new ship both inside and out. You might also learn a bit about Architecture and Design process along the way!

Out of all the things I can do right now, I'm watching a guy reviewing a virtual ship in a video game that I didn't even own, about a luxury ship that, even if I own the game, I probably can't afford buying... And I'm both amused and impressed and attracted by both the ship and the video. I think you just introduced Star Citizen for a kid who's usually into FPS games. Nice job man.

just you know: star citizen is considered as a fps game.
Of course only a part of it is actual shooting other guys with your pistol but everything is a fps. Also a simulator. Also a racing game. Also a space ship fighting game. Also a plane fighting game. Also a delivery game.... I think you understood my point

Not too hard too play around with the 890 Jump. It was available for free rental during the free fly event that just ended (and should be in future events) and it's the ship of the month for SC subscribers. Some subscribers are unlocking them at the ports so anyone can jump in them and play around. Morphologis doesn't own one either, because if he did it would have came with a snub in the hangar bay (which he could have reviewed as well). With free fly events, sub benefits and rentals, SC isn't super restrictive.

LOL This is me as well... All of a sudden I'm interested in playing Star Citizen - after avoiding it all this time. A real-world architect reviewing a virtual starship in a video game... WOW. It's clear that I have far too much time on my hands! On a serious note though... it's becoming pretty clear that RSI is doing a great job of indirectly influencing digital modelers to become even more attentive to form, function and real-world design considerations for their 3d models. For example, check out the commentary beginning at 17:21. You could almost see a future time where real-world architects / designers are hired by developers like RSI to assist in the actual design of various 3d models like this. Blows my mind...

The attention to detail; showcasing the spaces from different angles; and portraying the use cases of guest vs crew; all made for a wonderful viewing experience. What would go a long way to making this the superyacht of the star citizen world would be to have 3 or 4 different liveries and designs that could be specced when purchasing, so that they're not all identical. Superyachts today are not bought fresh off the assembly line...they are built to order and exceedingly custom. That level of bespoke may not be feasible for a game such as star citizen, however at this calibre of luxury and expense it would be absurd for every single 890 to be identical.
Even better, make a few tiers of designs, progressively more opulent and exponentially more expensive to spec, so that seeing an 890 may be a semi regular occurrence but seeing the the 890 Empire Edition entirely finished in luxury wood paneling, gilding, marble and diamond chandeliers is next to impossible.

I worked in a restaurant, and: That is too far to go from the kitchen to the restaurant area. You need a food elevator. Also, you don't want to go through the bar to the restaurant with food. Just imagine somebody spilled something or tripped and fell on the server. Even if the server had the food on a cart, thats a catastrophe waiting to happen.
Also - a suite next to the bar and toilets?! Seriously? Toilets need to have a separate corridor separated from the main corridor. Why? Because of the smell. You can't just let it to the main corridor. And you don't want to see people entering/leaving a toilet while entering the bar. Imagine you are a VIP, just entered the ship, heading to the bar and while you are going through the main corridor, some other guest is leaving a toilet. With the sound of toilet flushing and a bad smell coming from the place. Luxury gone. This is basic stuff. And you need to have separate toilets for the staff. There should be just a one small toilet in the waiters backroom. Otherwise it is completely unnecessary. You never want your waiter to be in some back room doing some stuff. You ALWAYS want to see your waiter and you ALWAYS want him to see you. Especially in those "first class" restaurants. The waiter does not need any room other than a separate toilet(firstly, a toilet for the guests can be dirtier, especially when there is also a bar next to the restaurant area - there will be a lot of drunks who puke or miss the toilet, even among the super-rich, you don't want your waiter to enter this kind of environment and then handle food, secondly, it is a social standard, waiter is below the guest on social ladder at the time he is serving, you don't want him to use the same toilet as the guest uses and the waiter's toilet can be much simpler, more utilitarian, less luxurious, than the guest's toilet) that has to be super-clean. He can use some storage where he has reserve glasses, plates and silverware, but why is there a computer? You should have a computer on or under the bar and work from there, enter your orders for the kitchen there, you can't go to a separate area to enter the order. If that was a case, you wouldn't need the computer at all, you could straight up go to the kitchen and tell them.

Yes they have all the time in the universe, I think, but that much space is only enough for two or three cooks at maximum, and the sink is on the other side of the hovering counter. A way to fix that would be to use the space otherwise inaccessible due to the hovering counter and detach it so that it runs parallel to the rest of the counter space, thereby also providing a place to put finished dishes for conveyance onto carts.

You have to keep in mind that taking a look at an in-game space ship from the perspective of an architect was - from my limited knowledge - never done before. Shooter maps aren't taken apart like this and other prominent sci-fi games mostly even lack interior as a whole (Halo, Eve online...). You can't judge them for making mistakes while doing things that no one pulled off before: creating habitable areas as would actual humans, living beings use every day. And even in reality, architects make *big* mistakes that create not only minor discomfort (like this spa lift) but hostile environments. Here in Germany, they still haven't finished the airport in Berlin due to major errors in planning and financing. My opinion is that a video game, filled with living spaces for living humans is *not* easy to pull off without references.

Casanova Frankenstein I think you actually have a point despite making it sound very harsh. CIG has a history of having their ships be redesigned over an over again which of course burns money and resources. You don’t have to be an interior architect to see the most striking design flaws of e.g. the 600i, perhaps because they are building ships mainly from a gaming point of view and not also a realistic one and the „flaws“ we are talking about here are often of the highest standards. Could a bit more thought go into such ships, considering their price? Definitely. Do they need to hire an actual architect to have a look at their designs? Only if it would actually save ships from having to be redesigned over and over again. A bit more time and love in the design phase may already help even though an additional quality control might be appropriate. After all there are already multiple persons involved into such a process, where process supervisors should realize too striking flaws in design and having read the Jump Point articles about ship creation the communication between what they want and what they get seems sometimes difficult, as these designers appear to work from home and likely work on multiple projects, where they only send and receive feedback every few days. To involve another supervisor might be even more tricky.

I'm blown away at the design touches. These guys make games not hotels and yachts. There's a couple minor nitpicks but they are minor. Kudos to the devs. The little details are fantastic. It's the kind of home I wish I had in real life!
And kudos to Morph for doing the research into things like the big lighted wall thing. Great eye, and caught some many things I didn't. Analyzing from a guest and worker's POV - brilliant. A lot of work but I really enjoyed it.
I make games so I see the game design side. You want defendable not impregnable. So weak spots can make for a more fun game. This is really a floating FPS level map.

My problem with this ship, as a designer, is that while it's beautiful - it is also very confusing. There are a lot of walkways and rooms, but it's not immediately clear where everything is or which way to take.
This becomes even more appearent when you think about it in terms of efficiency, e.g. space used, human behaviour or a case of emergency.
It's clear that this ship was designed by game designers, and not a real industrial design team who would think about these kind of things. It's more of a "what would look cool" than a "what makes sense first and how can we make that look good".

@@flute136 I find it funny because this whole meme of "Star Citizen is a scam" and "X will be done before Star Citizen comes out... If it ever does" is slowly dying as people start seeing the incredible tech that it took to get this far. I mean, there is seriously no other game out there that pushes things this far. Don't wanna spend $1000 on a ship? Then don't. Spend $50 on an Avenger Titan and get a fantastic ship that can do anything ingame while spending the remaining $10 that you saved from buying a "AAA Game" on some icecream.
It's so weird to see a game that actually keeps looking better as time goes on, instead of aging graphically and gameplay-wise. As for Elite Dangerous being a better game... Right... I've played both and can easily state that the universe feels not only hollow, but incomplete surface-wise. Speaking of incomplete, where are those player-fleet carriers that were supposed to be in for December? Is Space Legs actually going to be an FPS module or a glorified walkathon for the fleet carriers? (Which is the community theory for the delay) meanwhile SC has been built from the ground up with FPS in mind, whether engaging in a firefight on a desert planet while small agile fighters vye for air dominion overhead, or destroyers and their escorts pound each other with torpedoes and barrages of firepower.
"Way better full game" You might like arcadey shooters, that's fine, I do too and honestly Elite D is a good game for what it sets out to do, I enjoyed it for a bit with friends. But what the devs are trying to do here is absolutely insane and is not even comparable to what Elite Dangerous is. Two different games with two different goals.
