    I hope you enjoyed this first Intro to sword & cape. There is a lot more of course, but that will have to wait for future videos 😊

    Can't wait to see a modern addition to the technique with the "locker room towel snap to the face"

      Unfortunately... or maybe luckily we don't allow cameras in our locker room 😅😂

      It would be a great way to decide who's the lord of the locker room.

    A worthwhile technique for any period. Was just reading in Egil's Saga how the Vikings were captured in Kurland/Courland/Kurzeme in current day Latvia after the villagers threw blankets over their swords. In case of Vikings, make sure you tie them up well afterwards, or they will escape and murder everyone, though, whereas perhaps in the Bolognese tradition a word of honour will suffice.

    I see that one thumbs-down on this and videos like it and wonder what on earth that person was thinking when they made that judgement.

    When I was a kid, I played the GURPS ttrpg and there was this Cloak skill. I remember reading that and thinking:
    "Where this guys get these coocoo ideas? I mean, I know this is a game, but suspension of disbelief has its limits."
    Well, I stand corrected.

    Surprisingly heavy!

    @b.h.abbott-motley2427 Před 2 lety +5

    That cape weighs 4+lbs (1.8+kg)? That is quite substantial. Hoodies typical weigh less, like 0.5-1.5lbs (0.2-0.7kg). Do we have surviving Renaissance capes & know how much they weighed? If the weight of the cape here is accurate, it seems like using a lighter substitute such as a hoodie would affect the technique a touch.

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  Před 2 lety +7

      This cape is maybe even in the 2.5+kg range. Im on vacation at the moment, but I will weigh it as soon as possible. The hoodie used in this video is quite heavy as well, since it is also quite warm.
      On a recent workshop we gave, people used everything from hand towels, hoodies, to heavy reenactment wool cloaks. The heavier once worked better in generell.
      Sadly the museums don't give weights, but this one I used for the pattern for the cloak Martin is using in the video, and with two layers (velvet inner and rigid cloth outer) it is allready at the around 2.5kg. objektkatalog.gnm.de/wisski/navigate/140904/view I made a pair of lighter half cloaks as well, which will be probatly featured in the next videos on this series. Best, Stephan

      Might be worth remembering that "capes" weren't a homogenous thing. There were short cloaks and long; lightweight, medium weight, and heavyweight thicknesses.
