Y’all won’t believe this, but when I first came from the freshwater side of the hobby to saltwater, I got a pair of snowflake and black ice as my first two fish. I had a 5g betta tank next to it. I guess overnight or something my clownfish got startled and I found him in the betta tank in the morning. Somehow he lived through that and I still have the clown today.
I’m 15, when I was at school my heater exploded, wiping out most of my tank. I got home fast enough and saw that the only things left were Xenia, my two normal ocellaris, GSP (go figure), torch, and my banggai cardinal. I put the fish in a bucket to try and fix what happened quickly, and the two clowns murdered the cardinal. I got a job, traded in the clowns for a Platinum Percula, and now I’m restarting my reef. Thanks for the cool vid!
I just want to say thanks for making super quality content. I am very new to the hobby and watching channels like yours has really helped me learn so much. I just got my very first pair of Clownfish about 3 weeks ago and they're doing great! So thanks for doing what you're doing and helping people like me learn.
Worst experience was bringing home a pair of perculas who did not get along. The larger (female) was attacking the male. I stayed up ALL night babysitting the new couple in my tank, switching them in and out of the acclimation tub that sat on the rim of the tank (for safety reasons) and rearranging the aquascape until she was so confused with all the changes, she lost interest in being the worst boyfriend rejector in marine history. She still has that streak of “it’s mine!” at feeding time, but at least she’s learned togetherness is better than the time-out corner.
My worse experience with a clown fish, has got to be never having to own one. I’m actually considering starting my first nano reef. I’m a bit nervous as I have no experience with salt water. I’ve seen a couple of tutorials and will be doing more research. The clown fish is definitely the fish of choice to start. Wish me luck!
You just need to start i have no idea what im doing and i have succesful kept 8 fish and 12 corals for over 6 months and i never tets my water quality just water changes and bacteria
The worst experience I have had with clownfish is with breeding. I can handling losing fry, it happens, but I have a pair that does all the mating rituals ("seizures', twitching, chasing each other down, cleaning out their spot to lay eggs) and they still haven't laid eggs. This has been going on for a while and I'm starting to feel like a dad that just wants to be a grandpa. Love clownfish and great video. I've been incredibly interested in the long-fin clownfish that I've seen on occasion.
Cool video! My worst clown story was my first ever fish story. Excited for my first fish, got them and and they spent a month hiding behind the filter equipment! I never got to see them lol.
When I was in this hobby fresh from the start with little info and zero Patience. I went out to my LFS and bought two black false perculas trying to pare them. The first day was great no fighting and everything was going well then the next day I woke up and looked at my tank and one was missing. So I was frantically looking for the other clown and found him in the back of my tank in the sump of my bio cube. Thankfully it survived and didn’t jump and land on the floor.
My worst experience with a clownfish was having your number one clownfish on your list (Black Ice) clown jump out of my QT tank with a lid on it. There was only a 1/2 inch gap or less right were the HOB filter meets up with the glass. Shame I found him dead on the floor the next morning.. He was a beautiful specimen. Keep the great content coming Jeff!
My two maroon clowns are just mean to anything near their anemone I’ve had missing antennas on shrimps due to their aggressiveness. But I would be interested in one of the designers though Thanks for the video
I love clown fish i think ive had at least one in every tank ive put together. I have a pair i was told midnight black, they are all black with clear/white tipped fins that show almost blue. Also a black ice im looking to pair with a black snowflake maybe
Awesome video! My worst experience with a clownfish was when my female ocellaris picked a trumpet coral head clean off its skeleton, even though she was fed regularly. Such a great time.
I had to get rid of one of my mochas cause he was 3rd wheeling and the female wasn't having it. Sad but definitely didn't want to loose a clown. I know they are very common fish but they are the whole reason I got into the hobby. Fyi, the mocha is swimming happily in my friend 90g cube with a clown herrim
My worst experience with a clown fish was with one of my favorite clowns I had. It was a maroon clown and it was huge. I had it for about 6 years but when I first got it it went through the monster biting stage. Since it was so big it was not like a normal clown bite. He drew blood once. Over time however he calmed down dramatically and stopped biting unless you messed with his anemone, which he had the closest bond with of all the clowns I ever had.
Awesome, informative Video, learned a lot. Thank You for that. My worst experience with quite a few pairs of clown fish was trying to get them to host an anemone. I tried to get them to host, green BTA, RBTA, and Rainbow BTA"s. FYI - each try was with a different pair of clown fish. FIRST TRY: , I tried putting the nem in a collander, straddling a 10 gal. tank, and then the clowns. Taking out some water every day for 2 weeks, until the clowns had no choice but to taste and be interacting with the nem. RESULT was, when I was convinced they were hosting, I put the nem in the tank, then the clowns. They never went near the nem again. SECOND TRY: , I netted the clowns one by one and put them directly in the nems. RESULT was, NO LUCK. I must have traumatized them and to this day they hide on the opposite side of the tank from their nem. THIRD TRY: , I placed the nem in the tank and waited to see if it was going to move. Then I took a pair of clowns one by one, placing in a clear tube with the only exit inside their nem. RESULT was, as soon as they got out of the nem, they each ran for their lives, again this pair stays away from the nem as well. I will never give up, but could someone give me some new ideas PLEASE??? LOL, must have been something I said. . .Hum . . . thanks for reading. Nancy D.
A pair of clownfish were my first saltwater fish. Unfortunately they passed during QT but they taught me a very valuable lesson about proper cycling of a saltwater tank. LFS owner was nice enough to replace them once my tank was actually ready for fish.
My worst experience with a clown was I bought a pair of them (mocha) and they looked healthy and they were eating and had no visual parasites (at least that I noticed ) then when I got home I noticed white dots on them and keep in mind this was my first saltwater tank and first fish so... I was very unexpected and those darn clowns infected my entire tank with ick and I lost 2 mandarins and a tangora goby needless to say I definitely have a quarantine tank now 💀😂😂
Awesome video, my worst clownfish experience was when I had a hybrid of Picasso and snowflake. Everything was going great she would eat out my fingers, but one morning I was getting ready for work. I looked into the tank and I couldn't find her. It took me about 10 minutes of looking to find out she got spooked and jumped out in the middle of the night. Now every tank I have has some kind of screen or canopy.
I wish these companies still had species specific lines of clownfish. Have a 100% true percula is very rare now a days. The designers have mixed so much that they are hybrid of the species.
My worst experience with a clown fish so far is that I’m still saving for my first saltwater aquarium. So as of right now I’m still at look don’t touch status not with just clowns, but all saltwater fish. Having grown up in Maine its is cool to hear about a company involved with the hobby though. While I wait for the money for my first saltwater tank I will just have to enjoy my freshwater tanks.
Buying a clown fish from one of the big box stores and finding out everything had ich and of course i was new to the hobby and didn't know the importance of quarantining fish. Needless to say lost all my fish at that time.
I just got a pair of gold lightning maroon clown fish for $60 I love there opal white color and vibrant orange. I’ll have some video on my channel in a few days😁
Sadly, bought a pair of beautiful clowns, with in one week one of the fish claimed a corner, stopped swimming around the tank and then passed away within 24 hrs. On a happy note, my other clown is thriving and happy. Bittersweet experience.
I've been reefing for only a year and have not purchased a clown fish 🐠. We have started with damsels before we knew better. If I only found this information before. Enjoy the videos.
I’m new to the saltwater side of the hobby but just got some golden nugget maroons. I think their color is stunning and am really excited to build around them
My male clown was eaten by my anemone. Had him for a couple of years and walked in to him being spit out of the anemones mouth! Luckily I was able to pair the female with another clown.
After I got my first two clown fish my wife call me at work to say that the smaller one was being eating by a emblem crab . No more then 24 hours in the tank🙁
My worst experience with clownfish since I am new to the hobby is seeing them at the LFS and looking at the price tags for some of the nicer looking clowns.
My worst experience with a clown fish, was moving them from the QT to the main tank. We caught the first one, but the second one freaked me out by literally playing dead. We carefully netted it, and got it out of the water...where the little turd decided.....he was jumping into the main tank!!! Talk about scaring the crap out of someone LOL!!! With all that aside....both clowns are doing well in the main aquarium. whew!!!
My worst experience with a clown fish was at my workplace! A lady couldn't understand why she had to buy a saltwater aquarium if she wanted a clownfish and wanted the cheaper freshwater tank for it! I stood my ground until she left in a huff.
Probably when I brought another pair home and put in my main display. Thought it was big enough, but they wouldn't stop fighting. Had to split the 2 pair up. Luckily I had another tank without a pair of clownfish!
Just got my first bonded pair of frostbites from substantial Aquatics and man are they an awesome pattern, mine have a decent amount of the tiny black spots on the mostly white body and they have that blue hue around every spot and it stands out let me tell you very beautiful pair of clowns and price is pretty spot on in 2021 lol paid right at $200 for the pair shipped worth every penny to me and id buy again in s heartbeat! In fact I'm debating on setting up another evo 13.5 for a 2nd pair lol love them that much very very beautiful fish
I had one that was a vicious murderer... went through 4 dead clown fish until i gave up trying to pair it up with another clown.. added a six line wrasse and left it at that. wallet is still recovering...
Great video on these top 10 beauties. Worst experience for me is when my pair of Premium Picasso clowns used to chase my black cap basslet all through my 75g tank for the first 3 weeks then all of a sudden stopped. They were relentless. .
I had a ocellaris clown that was super territorial in my bio cube and wouldn’t let any fish live in his tank except a yellow watchman (I eventually had to get rid of him).
My worst experience Lol soo I'm super new to the hobby and I've always seen clownfish with the lights on moving around. So fast forward a little bit and I have an SW tank that just finished it's cycle. I go buy a clown fish and take him home everyone in my house my wife son hell even the dogs where excited. I turn off their light and kinda hang out to see what they are going to do and they where doing the weird things clowns do! Sleeping on his side! Need less to say we all freaked out. lol too funny. God Bless Thank You for Awesome Videos!
Pair of clownfish a black and white phantom and a Wyoming White picked up in a sale of a tank from someone leaving the hobby. Lost the Wyoming white in 2-3 weeks after the tank move and setup. Still have the phantom, female. But can’t get another clownfish into the tank. You know the story. Have tried about 5 times in past 6 months. Guess she’ll get to be a spinster.
I had a black ice snowflake which I flew from Mississippi to Oregon with me by flight , as soon as I introduced it in the tank it started dominating the tank and was picking on a maroon clown which was hosting a bubble tip anemone for almost a year I decided to separate them but I was sooo unfortunate that by the time I decided to separate them & went to take shower and come back to separate them the snowflake had already ripped the maroon to shreds so my advice is do not delay if u feel any fish has an aggressive streak in them .I gave up the hobby after that , but now looking at the new black storm ice clownfish I'm thinking of getting back into the hobby .
Hands down my worst experience with a clown came from my large female Percula. I tried to move a Duncan that was to close to where she had payed her eggs and she bit the webbing between my pointer and middle finger and took a chunk out of it. It bled everywhere and I ended up having to do a 50% water change to get my own blood out of the water. Talk about adding insult to injury!
I've never had a clown fish, because I'm in the process of building my tank right now. But I plan on getting a midnight clown and a naked clown and my first fish . Would these go good together?
I've never been able to get a clownfish to host an anemone, they typically like to host the top back corner of the tank. Im currently looking for a pair of clowns with an anemone now.
Had a gold stripe maroon, he was a mean fish. I was thrilled when he hosted the new anemone, but he beat the heck out of the anemone and killed it. I traded him back to the fish store. I now have 2 mocha clown, but i think they are actually black as they've been getting darker since i bought them. They seem to love each other, always cuddling.
My worst experience with clownfish would be my current headache. My clownfish pair have a new found love of slinging sand all over my frags on the sand bed. Completely buried an acan frag!!
Was the top of the tank open?
strange things happen. Crazy
thats funny as hell
Thank god that betta tank was there
Close the lid
Love the way you explain different fish and what size tank to put them in,your about the only one to do this.thank you
I’m 15, when I was at school my heater exploded, wiping out most of my tank. Just getting started in reefs. So excited about the journey.
Man where same too I never have a saltwater fish but I'm gonna start soon so I'm with you man good luck
You just need to start i have no idea what im doing and i have succesful kept 8 fish and 12 corals for over 6 months and i never tets my water quality just water changes and bacteria
Hi, do you have an update on your nano reef? I am curious because I have no experience with saltwater. Just freshwater aquariums.
The worst experience I have had with clownfish is with breeding. I can handling losing fry, it happens, but I have a pair that does all the mating rituals ("seizures', twitching, chasing each other down, cleaning out their spot to lay eggs) and they still haven't laid eggs. Just picked up a Frostbite Ocellaris and love love love her!
Got a small frostbite clown for $38 and tbh his markings are very quality and has a nice blue glow for a young fish.
This video Benifited me to get my favorite clown fish
Cool video!
My worst clown story was my first ever fish story. Excited for my first fish, got them and and they spent a month hiding behind the filter equipment! I never got to see them lol.
I just bought my very first pair of platinum clowns 😁 can’t wait for them to arrive
I recently got into the hobby, and my first pair are a premium black ice and a wynoming white. I can't wait to see what they produce in the future.
Another great vid. Been eyeballing the Phantom Clown. Now that I've had a side by side comparison, thanks to your video, I'm sold on it.
When I was in this hobby fresh from the start with little info and zero Patience. I went out to my LFS and bought two black false perculas trying to pare them. About to start my first tank. Going reef tank and am trying to get as much info as possible. Thank you!
Crown fish are my favorite fish in the world
My personal favorite will always be the Mocha Gladiator. Amazing fish!
Yeah, I was checking them out when I was on sea and reef. Nice choice!
Keep up the great vids
Sadly never had clownfish because I'm just starting my reef journey! One day I will get some of my own.
Half of these look pretty much the same to me, but its probably my unexperienced eye not seeing the differences.
Keep up the top 10s love it :)
Will do, Thanks
The Blackhawk are really cool too
Midnight clowns are my fav
My two maroon clowns are just mean to anything near their anemone I’ve had missing antennas on shrimps due to their aggressiveness.
But I would be interested in one of the designers though
Thanks for the video
My worst experience is right now not having my tank ready so I can keep some of this beautiful fish.
I love clown fish i think ive had at least one in every tank ive put together.
I have a pair i was told midnight black, they are all black with clear/white tipped fins that show almost blue. Also a black ice im looking to pair with a black snowflake maybe
Wish they had real blue or green clownfish. That would be cool. Might have to get a couple of black storms tho
Surprised no lightning maroon on this list!
I have only had clownfish for a couple of weeks, but one of my clownfish would make laps around the tank and run into the sides at high speed.
I think they are finding some good space that may not make them stress
When I first started the hobby I got 10 Maine Mocha Clownfish and put them in the tank but one of them was carrying a parasite that killed 8 of them
Keep up the great vids. The worse experience I had with Clown Fish was when my pair had brooklynella and past away. Very devastating.
My beloved clownfish pair started biting the crap out of me every time I cleaned the tank once they matured.
Awesome video! My worst experience with a clownfish was when my female ocellaris picked a trumpet coral head clean off its skeleton, even though she was fed regularly. Such a great time.
Great video!
Thanks Nick!
Worst experience was one of my phantom clownfish. Had the pair since they were about 1/2” long.
Awesome top 10! I so badly want to get a saltwater tank! Reefing has always fascinated me! Keep the great videos coming!! #FishFam!
Subscribed. I actually came across your channel for research to see which Clown's I should own. Great video!
One of my clowns got its self stuck in the sump. We were so scared when we couldn’t find it until we looked in the sump.
thanks I loved the video, great info
Awesome, informative Video, learned a lot. Thank You for that.
My worst experience with quite a few pairs of clown fish was trying to get them to host an anemone. I tried to get them to host, green BTA, RBTA, and Rainbow BTA"s.
FYI - each try was with a different pair of clown fish.
FIRST TRY:
, I tried putting the nem in a collander, straddling a 10 gal. tank, and then the clowns. Taking out some water every day for 2 weeks, until the clowns had no choice but to taste and be interacting with the nem.
RESULT was, when I was convinced they were hosting, I put the nem in the tank, then the clowns. They never went near the nem again.
SECOND TRY:
, I netted the clowns one by one and put them directly in the nems.
RESULT was, NO LUCK. I must have traumatized them and to this day they hide on the opposite side of the tank from their nem.
THIRD TRY:
, I placed the nem in the tank and waited to see if it was going to move.

Both of my clowns jumped out of my tank within 2 days 😤 but it taught me a lesson... BUY A SCREEN TOP!!!
Thank you for sharing. Great video.
That frostbite looks like a platinum with those blue hues
Great video. My worst experience was finding my male Picasso dried up on the floor with the female safe and sound in the tank.
I wish these companies still had species specific lines of clownfish. Have a 100% true percula is very rare now a days. The designers have mixed so much that they are hybrid of the species.

A clownfish splashed water in my face after telling him a bad joke. Waka-waka
Thanks for the Channel!
HAHa
Very first Clownfish I owned decided to do a little Carpet Surfing. Did not end well! Great video!
Jumping out of the tank never ends well.
Same
I have a pair of frostbite clowns. Guy called them bullet hole clowns but it’s unmistakable after seeing that pic you showed.
Sadly, bought a pair of beautiful clowns, with in one week one of the fish claimed a corner, stopped swimming around the tank and then passed away within 24 hrs. On a happy note, my other clown is thriving and happy. Bittersweet experience.
Number 3 the phantom has the map of Italy on we side of his face. 😉😉
Love clown fish.. they are the og
I just got a pair of frostbite clownfish, they are gorgeous!
Northeast coral Maine to New York should be plenty of locations to shop. Fun videos. Informative.
My clown jumped out of his tank but luckily my dad was there when he jumped out so he’s all good
I like clownfish. I like Jeff. I would like to hug both.
Got me a pair with ick kill most of my life stock like 3 years back 😢
Lighting maroon?? Just picked up a pair and a pair of frostbite. I have a flurry in another system too. Designer clowns are dope
My worst experience with a clown fish, was moving them from the QT to the main tank. We caught the first one, but the second one freaked me out by literally playing dead. They fight to figure out the picking order which has a lot to do with breeding.
Am I the only one that prefers common clowns over the designer ones?
Just got my first bonded pair of frostbites from substantial Aquatics and man are they an awesome pattern, mine have a decent amount of the tiny black spots on the mostly white body and they have that blue hue around every spot and it stands out let me tell you very beautiful pair of clowns and price is pretty spot on in 2021 lol paid right at $200 for the pair shipped worth every penny to me and id buy again in s heartbeat! In fact I'm debating on setting up another evo 13.5 for a 2nd pair lol love them that much very very beautiful fish
Great video! Love clownfish, my Darwins are downright nasty lol. Subbed
Nice update Jeff!!!!!
They were relentless. .
I love clownfish but no one ever talks about how mean they can be to their tank mates.
Mad Hatter's Reef I hear you. Mine chased a few of my fish including my blk cap basslet
I just found out that my female ocellaris is a black photon.
And i paid 9€ ( 12$) for her.
My personal favorite designer clownfish is the blood orange clownfish it is aggressive and will bite if you get into it's territory
OMG i just got a number 6 type of clownfish for the price of a regular
I had a ocellaris clown that was super territorial in my bio cube and wouldn’t let any fish live in his tank except a yellow watchman (I eventually had to get rid of him).
My worst experience Lol soo I'm super new to the hobby and I've always seen clownfish with the lights on moving around.
U for got the longfin ocellaris, and the longfin darwin ocellaris
And my favorites the peace keeper maroon and gold x lightning moroon
Worst Clown experience was when my black occ jumped into my salt mixing tub... not heated at the time and I did not realize in time to save her
4:00 back in 2017 or 2018 i bought one from petco.
I had a clown that loved to move frags on the sand bed under my live rock
I am *SUBSCRIBED*
Had a gold stripe maroon, he was a mean fish. I was thrilled when he hosted the new anemone, but he beat the heck out of the anemone and killed it. I traded him back to the fish store. I now have 2 mocha clown, but i think they are actually black as they've been getting darker since i bought them. They seem to love each other, always cuddling.
My worst experience with clownfish would be my current headache. My clownfish pair have a new found love of slinging sand all over my frags on the sand bed. Completely buried an acan frag!!
