As a South Asian, never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd see a main character - in a science-fiction show no less - wearing Indian ethnic wear, looking amazing, and delivering some of the funniest and badass lines. But here we are . I've waxed lyrical about this show too many times on The Expanse videos, but I just want to give a shout out to the costume department. Y'all did some fine fine fine work here, especially with Madam Avarsarala's wardrobe.
It confuses me though because is while here appearence could pass just about her accent is basically Persian- like they couldnt find an Indian actress or update the plot so she actually is? I assumed for like two seasons it was some appropriated future fashion, (i know of one caucasian congresswoman to wear african.clothes.sometimes) had no idea she was actually meant to be Indian.
@@jorgepeterbarton they had her in their minds from the get go. Even telling her that they would write a tv show with a role for her.
This is a couple years in the future when cultures merged a bit anyways. You can assume all the different nations and ethnicities on Earth are less separated. She could have Persian roots and her family migrated to India, resulting in a mix of culture and traditions in her family.
In the Books, she is Indian.

Why? It's not really relevant so it's not explained, but the texan accent is not that uncommon on Mars (chinesse and Japanese are also common, due to the original ethnicity of the marcial colonists) and he is obsessed with cowboys.
Belters speak a mix of spanish, Portuguese, english and other crap.
So if she has a Persian accent, i need no explanation
She is sporting Indian ethnic wear. The designers have done a good job in uplifting sarees and kameez for this role of a powerful woman. Kudos to her carrying them so graciously and that SWAG is killer👍

It's not just the gorgeous outfits but the accessories! I love her jewelry, especially those statement necklaces. One of the highlights of this show is seeing what Chrisjen is wearing. 😊

Avasarala is one of my favorite characters in the Expanse! The other is Drummer.
Best Character on the show, hopefully with more screen time in season 5. And more scenes with Bobbie and the Rocci crew (especially Amos)
Also is time for Joanne Hansen to win an emmy for Costume design.
Her outfits are a character all on their own. Elegant and Fabulous!

I absolutely LOVE The Expanse, and Avasarala is one of the best characters. There's never a moment that she doesn't look amazing. The costume designers definitely need to win some awards.
While others have mentioned it, I don't personally care about her potty mouth; I think it's all part of her personality. Sometimes the best word for a situation is a swear, even if others are available. It's efficiency and power. And in my experience, powerful people tend to have potty mouths. It just adds to the realism.
the saree has that effect, her character is strong and she is a good leader, the saree only helps the image, with the way she wears it
The designs are so awsome. I love how she is never seen wearing the same dress. Imelda Marcos would approve. As a representation of earthers I see this also as a representation of the decadence of earth compared to the spartan ways of mars and the poverty of the belt.
But also, she is aware she is playing a roll, and must dress to suit her very high status and importance in the government.
Best sci-fi show ever. Chrisjen, Camina and Bobbie are fabulous.
Give us more of her in season 5 I beg you!! Especially with Draper, their dynamic is amazing

I was hoping this was maybe gonna be a little snippet about costume design and how they use costume to build Avasarala's character but I guess a montage in which half the shots are of her in the dark or really far away is fine too.

All of her costumes and jewellery are inspired by Indian traditions and that Long drape of embroided cloth is called a SAREE....its very common here in India. If you like this, lookup indian weddings online and ull find some gr8 versions of these dresses.

She's a great character with amazing costumes. Now they just need to wash her mouth out with soap. It is so unattractive and unnecessary to be dropping the F-bomb every thirty seconds. A powerful woman does not need vulgarities to show her strength.

She swears constantly in the books, more so than in the show. I think her swearing is fine because it packs a punch, if she swore as constantly as in the books it would be less shocking and powerful.

It’s a science fiction show, and many common Christian practices go against biblical requirements. Also, read the books because it’s all in there. Not everything has to align with you politically, the show doesnt have the same politics as you. Get over it. Characters like Bobbie Draper are literally over six feet tall in the books, so of course they’re gonna be on par with most men physically. There are actual women who act like that (she’s a soldier, not a princess) in real life, so it’s not farfetched. Besides Avasarala is not perfect, she’s not supposed to be.
