Adam Savage Explores the Costumes of The Expanse!

- Adam recently went behind the scenes of Syfy's The Expanse, visiting the production and exploring the props, costumes, and sets created for the show. One of Adam's favorite places was the costume department, where costume designer Joanne Hansen let him get up close to the custom armor and outfits worn by the cast. Plus, a visit to the costume breakdown and aging room for a look at weathering!
Season 2 of The Expanse premieres Wednesday, Feb. 1 on Syfy. Season 1 is available now, via on demand, Syfy.com and Amazon Prime.

This is so freaking cool. There should be like at least 2 hrs dedicated to the costume/effects/BTS departments.
I almost feel like this is better than me being there and seeing it myself, as Adam can really appreciate every little detail and he understands the work that goes into making these costumes and suits. Kind of gives me a better perspective than if i just saw it myself...
Just saw tonight's Expanse and it was awesome, the episode before season 2 finale. They were playing the teaser for the season finale and saw someone familiar.. Adam! Had to pause it and was like holy shit, that's Adam Savage. So awesome and lucky to get on the show.
Yes! And the company Melba works for in season 3 is Savage Industries!

I remember spotting him and having to blink and scroll back to confirm if it was really him.
So cool. So much goes into the aging process and the wear/tear process. Amazing to me that all of those pieces are brand new.
I realized that Amos was shot on Ganymede in season 2, and is still wearing a jumpsuit with a bullet hole and bloodstains in season 4.

I love the business dress/formalwear in The Expanse, like how they do something different with the suit and shirt collars. Looks really modern, I’d totally wear it for work.

In the aging department, they kept focusing on the two of them and the suit got barely a second or two. They could have shown the prop while we could still hear their conversation.

Quite interested in this show/book series.
its really good
Its an awesome book series, 6 books out so far, but there will be 9 total. The books are written by 2 guys under the pseudonym S.A. Corey, and they write alternate character perspectives then trade work back and forth until they think its done. The TV series is likewise terrific, and with Season 1 we were only about 2/3s of the way through the *first* book, so there is a lot of material for future seasons. The authors are advising on the show so although its different from the books, its still true to the spirt of the story they want to tell.
Well worth watching, now my favourite SF period :)

there is some difference from the books and the show, but i think thats healthy to each forum. i've read all the books, since i saw the show last year. so yeah im a huge fan of this story/world/ miller amos alex naomi holden avasarala/ bobbie! and the proto and the concept of planetism. earth vs mars/ belters/ it needs to get hyped so much, its fun and smart. not something you see everyday
I saw it on Netflix but haven't watched it yet. Starting season 1 right away!

I love Alex's pilot jacket,the one that has the Tachi logo want to buy one, also love how alex was not sure how to operate the roci at first, then he became an amazing pilot, space piloting is an awesome concept in the expanse

When she points out that there is an entire department for the ageing process, Adam has a look on his face like "OMG this would be my dream job! why have I not been doing this?"
If someone wants to get into working behind the scenes for film working for someone like her as a intern is probably one of the more practical entry level jobs you can get that is just as rewarding as far as getting your foot in the door especially for syfy cause you will always have new projects.

by learning about costume in film and series, I can almost assume they will invent the best cooling unit for a suit, since they have to deal with that problem on a quasi daily basis. Great work.

Ooo, costumes! I knew you liked fidgety bits, Adam, but I didn't know you enjoyed the nuts and bolts of it...You've been put on my laminated list! (Don't worry, at this stage of my life, the laminated list is people I'd like to sit across a table from, having a drink and talkin about...well, everything! And if it's any help, AB is on the list too! LOLOL)
It'd be fun if Adam got up close & personal with the Red Dwarf costumes and sets, and of course created his own Kryten costume... :D

a pretty good thing that this series gets so much attention from real fans of the genre... it really is a gemstone and we should try to keep this talented team around to do more of this. hopefully netflix picks up US distribution of the series after its cancellation on syfy ( cancelling a 100% on rotten tomatoe? I do not get it). Well Alcon Entertainment will find someone else to buy into the next Season for the US market and since Netflix already has most Countrys world wide covered my guess is that Netflix will pick up the check for the US market also.... Adam as a real fan and maker of props is making a really really good interview here.. passion all around.. so thumbs up.

this is so amazing. whenever I want do design something like this it looks awfully boring (kinda like the early super hero costumes). I'd like to make real costumes; to elaborate: costumes for dress up from functional materials and with functions, like a spacesuit but a working one. is that strange?

Is the leather on the armor (the first costume they showed) real? I would figure that to be expensive, why use it rather than a fake leather?
For starters, it would be much more breathable than fake leather.
