10yrs late, finally get to watch it (thanks covid) and what a magnificent film. Worth the price of admission for the iguana stakeout scene alone. Amazing.
For me was a deep movie. The movie make you feel as the Nic Cage character. After the end you really think that maybe some things arent real . Like you are in drugs. Is a trip to the addiction. Also the context of New orleans after the tragady. The color blue. The lizzards. the choices, the moral. What makes you good or bad. Because we know that he is not bad just have problems and adiction There is not a happy ending for the character here. Is like a new taxi driver. Sorry for my english
I understand what this critic is saying, but I like Herzog's Bad Lieutenant, and it's okay if it doesn't 'change the world'. I enjoy it like I enjoy David Lynch's Blue Velvet. They both offer odd and depraved characters living in a bizarre, slightly unreal world. The tidy happy ending after the violence definitely reminds me of Blue Velvet as well.
Frankly, I think Mark should see this movie again. I didn't get much more than he did out of it the first time I saw it, but there is much more to get. Part of the problem is that Cage (who I thought I wasn't a fan of, but it turns out I don't know me) is so entertaining and crowd-pleasing quintessential Cage character that one is not immediately drawn to look deeper.
Leading actor Nicolas Cage delivers one of his better & best roles in this thrilling, violent, well crafted & enjoyable crime thriller. (83%) (4/5 stars) (positive)
I saw it for free, last Sunday =) a lot of the detective parts seemed B movie and boring, but once he lost all his morals and the dark humour kicked in I was loving it too xD Loved the old woman abuse scene and the crazy Herzog reptiles!
kermodes hair is made for those headphones. the harvey kietel wanking scene is ridiculous. Cage for all the shit he does still has that energy about him that i love. Cage/Burton superman movie is the greatest movie that never was
That's a bit of a stretch. I think it is what is as just a way wrap this bizarre story up. I never got the suggestion that this was a fantasy, but considering all the crack he had smoked over the course of the film there is argument for a bit of brain damage. I don't over analyse stuff like this too closely and just enjoy it for the ride that it is. Not many movies have the nerve to be so boldly bizarre and not come off as ridiculous, but Herzog has a firm hold on reins but lets it run wild.
An interesting movie that is sunk by a silly "happy" ending and all the ploy lines are all tied up with a laughable neatness. At least it didn't make me feel as filthy as the first one. When Nick Cage works with directors who know how to keep a tight rein on his peculiar acting style he can interesting. Anyone who has not seen Vampire's Kiss I highly recommend watching it for his performance----and it's just a terrific movie. Or watch Dead Fall. He is in it for probably less than 30 minutes.Wow
there is the theory that the happy ending is a false one, depending on how you look at it. the almost comical way everything suddenly gets tied up might not have happened, since the scene before all that was a shoot out, maybe he got shot and killed and so the ending is imaginary? I think it's open to interpretation but that's how I see it...
@TulseLuper The difference there is that this is a decent yet very different take on the original movie, Herzog's Bad Lieutenant being more of a black comedy compared to Ferraras gritty and dark original. The Wickerman Man reamke was a completely pointless and worthless piece of drivel.
Mark Kermode...Blah Blah Blah. ADD Talks-a lot-but-says-nothing. All that is wrong with the world. Bless him, he doesn't even realize how dull he is. Jealous. x
Nick Cage should get an Oscar for his performance in this. He just chews up the scenery.

“Shoot him again!
His soul is still dancing...”

What are these fucking iguanas doing on my coffee table??

"It was not a significant bullet!"
Dude speaks fast
This is better than Ferrara's, but they're not really related in any way.
I loved it , and to see a decent Nic Cage film for god knows how long its a win for me.
This film was hilarious, especially the ending
This movie was just supposed to be a crime movie and the producer just slapped the name Bad Lieutenant on it to make more money

Good god, man, the question is - WOULD YOU LIKE HIM TO?!
@frogtastic1000 He's actually surprisingly "good". His Jimmy Stewart impression is better than ever.
I will take Kermode but hold the Mayo please.
It took three years for someone to enjoy this joke ... What a cold world we live in !

Pure enjoyment! (and Faruza Balk in that cops uniform is going straight to the w@nk bank!)
Watch the original!!!!!!
Remake is better
@BRm2008 I preferred this version tbh

id hate to find out what your best movie of 2010 was.
i loved this film. a f****d up fairytale. reminded me of bad santa. complex character who is both bad and good.
This film was alright it hard to follow a bit and it had some boring bits

This movie will be forgotten, while Ferrara's will live on as a masterpiece.
really sounds like someone trying not to say anything critical about a filmmaker he loves
you think too much about mark kermode
Both movies were terrible. The idiotic salvation theme in the first one makes it worse.
Hopeless movie. Pretentious script and cage way beyond parody... not a massive fan of the original but it's miles better than this
This movie was truly awful. Poor dialogue and constant misfires with casting choices and attempts at humour.
This movie was terrible.
