  • What other movie has an iconic moment where a Ruger SP101 is staring you in the face? Gene and Roger both agree Harvey Keitel should have at least been nominated for an Academy Award but the NC-17 canked that idea.
    In the summer of 1993 I saw this in my off base apartment outside Osan Air Base. I bought a $500 Pioneer laser-disc player and the fantastic lady at the Base Exchange asked me what laser-discs I would like her to order. I told her The Good, The Bad, The Ugly and Citizen Kane and incredibly it was on the shelf about a month later. Then I saw this movie with Keitel and his gun on the cover on that same shelf. and bought this laser-disc for probably $30. Just think Keitel was in this movie and the Reservoir Dogs + The Piano the next year and then Pulp Fiction the next!!

    The real saving grace of this movie is that the main character eventually breaks down completely and repents for all his bad behaviour - and Harvey Keitel delivers it in a way that made it 100% believable for me.
    Some people are bad - but not all people are bad at the core.

    A brutal defining moment in cinema history. Keitel should have got an Oscar. I watched this in a cinema in 1992 and the whole place felt on edge.

      ROGER THAT. It had a limited release so an Oscar was out of the question. Plus the 'full FRONTAL'😲 scene didn't help..

    Top 5 or 10 "gangster-crime" drama of all-time. Harvey Keitel should've gotten an Oscar. Only got thru half of the Nicholas Cage one...

    When it came out this review made me go to the art house movie and see it when it was new. I walked away feeling sad for Keitel's character and especially the kids with such a screwed up dad. I never doubted it was a masterpiece and a classic ultimately. What a mind blowing movie set in good old gritty nyc.

    Funny thing about this movie is how the director went on profane rants in the press against one of its producers when the producer later made a movie called Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans (worst title ever?) and against Werner Herzog who directed the second movie. The original was tenth on Ebert's best of 1992 list and the second movie was Ebert's #1 best of 2009.

    • @erichaynes7502
      @erichaynes7502  Před 3 lety +20

      I can't blame him his original is such an iconic classic I'd hate for someone to ripoff the title. It's like someone with the rights to Raging Bull going out and hiring Herzog to make Raging Bull - Little Joey's Story.

      I read somewhere that this movie is Harvey Keitel's version of Taxi Driver. I don't know if that's true but if it is I like this movie A LOT better!
      Speaking of Taxi Driver it's one of my most depressing movies ever. I was in my dorm room in Incirlik Air Base Turkey and after I saw TD I went across the street to a little store(called the Shoppette) and at the checkout line the Turkish cashier asked if I was alright. This is something that NEVER happened lol. Somebody told me The Joker is a similar depressing movie. I don't know if that's true but I've had many chances to see The Joker but never even got to the opening scene.

      @@erichaynes7502 There's a page on IMDB where you can bring up all their videos, about 100 of them. I can e-mail you the link. However, those episodes have all been put on the Siskel and Ebert archive site under the correct years on the menu. So that's an easier way to view them.

    Credit to these critics they could voice their appreciation of a shocking , but powerful piece of cinema immersion. Shame on Jimmy Page or Led Zeppelin for their lawsuit to remove the Schoolly D track that have the film a raw and visceral feel when I saw it first time in an art house cinema. Subsequent viewings of the edited version felt too sanitised and missed that gritty street feel

    Did the laserdisc of Bad L have the Schoolly D song Signifying Rapper in it? It was removed from most versions after Jimmy Page sued because the backing track was basically Kashmir. It's a tougher film with that song in it.

    • @erichaynes7502
      @erichaynes7502  Před 3 lety +3

      Yep, my laserdisc had Signifying Rapper in it. I think they finally took it out of later versions of the Laserdisc.

    • @marvinnashsear
      @marvinnashsear Před 2 lety +1

      @Mahala Films In the UK only the cinema version had Signifying Rapper in it. It was removed from the video version, which came out a long time after the cinema release because of a controversy about violent films in the media yet again. The VHS version also lost 1 minute 47 seconds due to censorship. When it was first shown on Film4 on UK TV it was this censored version BUT with Signifying Rapper on the soundtrack. The film has been treated like shit in Britain. The original dvd release by Pathe was uncut visually but again the song was removed as well as the first 32 seconds of audio of the baseball radio phone in that starts the film and it was in 4:3 with no real extras. The only version worth buying is the Fabulous Films blu ray for the great (solo) commentary by Ferrara.

    • @marvinnashsear
      @marvinnashsear Před 2 lety

      @Mahala Films In the UK, I think all VHS versions were the same censored version, the Guild rental tape and the 4 Front tape definitely were. They also had a disclaimer printed on the cover that said "This film contains scenes that some viewers may find offensive" which I thought was an unusual move (and great marketing gimmick). Imdb says the original rental NC-17 VHS in the US is uncut with Signifying Rapper on the soundtrack. There's also the usual Blockbuster and the like censored R rated version which I would have liked to have seen only because it has an alternate scene in place of the prostitutes and nude Keitel one.

    Harvery Keitel was great in this movie, no doubt! The shocking thing about Bad LT. NOW, are the heinous acts committed by pigs on the regular. And those things make this movie seem tame NOW. The murder of Anthony Allegrini, The Rankin Co. Goon Squad, the killing of Ronald Green, and the Brave Cave pigs.....and that's not even close to covering how villainous cops really are.
