    While series 2 was better, i did really enjoy season 1. Especially the one with the canibals and the final. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to skip it as it is still pretty good, and it is important to building up the characters and story.

    Of course its Children of Earth. I'd go so far as to say that Children of Earth is my favorite story in the entire Whoniverse. It blows anything Doctor Who has ever done way out of the water. More evidence as to why I feel Doctor Who is held back by being a family show.

    • @Jonathan-vf7wg
      @Jonathan-vf7wg Před 3 lety +3

      I think one of the main reasons Doctor Who is held back because it doesn’t have continuous 5 part long stories to develop a story. The most a doctor who story is, is a 2 parter

    11 years old, starting secondary school I picked up a torchwood book in the school library. I’d never watched the show, at the time I didn’t realise it was a show, but I’d loved dr who for years. The books kept me going that year, I read them every library period and lunch. Eventually I watched the show, which broke my heart and later met the cast at comic con, they swore a lot for 12 year old me and I can still see the look on my dads face when he realised what sort of thing I’d been reading and watching 😂

    Children of earth caught me off guard. I was really enjoying the show for the most part, especially coming toward the end of season 2, and then it hit me sideways like a left hook I didn’t see coming. I’m not a person who is easily affected by shocking media, but children of earth fucked me up for a minute. It was so dark and like actually scary, and hopeless and I completely forgot for a moment that this was even in the same universe as Doctor Who. It was so tightly fitted with story and character and it just raised the stakes again and again until I genuinely believed there was No way Torchwood could win, that the human race was actually doomed, and the ending when it happened still didn’t disappoint. If someone hasn’t seen Torchwood, I recommend season two, and maybe a bit of season 1... but you HAVE to watch season 3, Children of earth

    Imagine if they brought Torchwood back, taking place after the big finish Series 5 & 6 but showing how they reformed Torchwood after Miracle Day, with Jack, Gwen, Rhys, Rex, and maybe a newbie, (I'd like Owen to get brought back given we never saw his body but it needs to be epic like Flash coming out of the speed force or Wonder Woman in the witching hour or Phoenix or Bad Wolf, it really just needs good vfx which can be provided to such a good show in 2018). The story should follow what the "phase 2" mentioned at the end of miracle day entails, with The Families as the villain perhaps working for something or someone else

    What I love about Torchwood is that there’s not always a mystery. There’s not always a plot. It’s based on character, as you said. That’s what I loved about it.

      @Jedi_Spartan Před 4 lety +1

      Although one of their best stories was based on an alien threat where the Earth needed the Doctor most (seriously, what's the explanation for where the 10th Doctor was and why the 12th didn't help while fulfilling his Oath to guard Missy). Also I want to see a non TV story of any incarnation after Tennant - or even Tennant himself during his build to Time Lord Victorious - coming across the 456 and confronting them.

  • @VeracityLH
    @VeracityLH Před 5 lety +5

    Excellent celebration of the best of Torchwood. I would give an honourable mention to Sleeper; the horror of finding out your whole life is a lie (or is it?) and the knowledge that it's all going to disappear - with the "when" coming without warning and being the trigger of an alien invasion... Horrible.
    Also, if we're including TW books, I have to say that my favourite is the inspiration for "Adam," "Border Prince" by Dan Abnett. Better than the episode yet different in an absolutely brilliant way, this novel hooked me on TW books. Go read the Amazon review by Andra Gannols for a peek.
    While I love my Doctor Who and am excited to see what Chris Chibnall will bring to it, Torchwood is my favourite rewatch telly. Long live Captain Jack & Co, even the ones who are dead and gone.

    As a fan of Doctor Who since the revival in 2005 and LOVE RTD's run with an aggressive passion based on nostalgia and genuine merit, I watched the first two series of Torchwood at the beginning of 2017 for the first time ever and doubted it would top the nostalgic and masterful episodes of the past...it didn't. Some episodes were good, but overall it was probably weaker then what I had seen in early series of SJA. Then I watched Children Of Earth and it still stands as my favourite thing I have ever seen in movies, television, games, books, etc. in my life! And then I watched Miracle Day...

      Hi dactyl the same here, I don’t know how to explain to people how it’s the best piece of fiction I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I was hoping 1 and 2 would recapture the nostalgia, but then just highlighted RTDs weaknesses as a writer. COE is what I feel is Davies’ treasured story, like all his passion has came out in perfection. I usually mind his sudden resolution for an ending, but the story as a whole overshadows any imperfections.

    It's funny. I get that season 1 has a lot of duds, but it also has some of my favourite episodes. Ones you didn't even mention here. Countrycide. Countrycide was the "holy sh%t, this is where I want this show to go!" episode for me. It was the first really dark episode that nailed themes to do with humanity. Jack saving the day is a bit silly, but otherwise that episode is one ball of tension. And the main baddy... Absolutely terrifying.
    Then there is "They Keep Killing Suzie". One of my all-time favourites. Even though, as someone from a Christian family, the talk of afterlife makes me a little uncomfortable (the show is weirdly inconsistent with the afterlife) I love that it sinks it's teeth into our fear of death. Suzie is also a great antagonist as she is both crazy and does evil things, but she is somehow still very sympathetic. And the plot moves at a breakneck speed. That shot where Jack stands over Suzie's dead body and the music starts playing. Gives me shivers. The episode also has a few really funny moments. And a great examination of the team dynamics. The only thing I was bummed about is we didn't see the fallout.
    Another episode people sleep on, which I know is also very divisive, is 'Random Shoes'. I love this episode. It definitely hits the bitter twang of grief you get in a dysfunctional family, which hits a little close to home. But also this fear I think many of us have of leading an insignificant life and being forgotten. It's bitter-sweet and yet beautiful.
    Honestly, these three are my favourites of season 1. I like a few others, but these are the ones I come back to again and again and again.

It's fun and doesn't take itself too seriously so it can explore different things because it was a new show so the stakes were lower.

      It was really good. My favourite to be honest. But I see so many people who dislike it. I thought it was so well done with a great concept and really interesting plot, with one of the best endings ever. The ending was Eugene trying to help Torchwood, by saving Gwen, which is what he always wanted, the thing he treasured most was so important in the plot and was quite unexpected when he uses it to save Gwen and his life seemed pointless to himself he didn't really have much going, but the one thing he stuck with turned out to be the most important thing for his character. I could go on forever lol

    My humble opinion, Children of Earth is amazing, bits of season 2 are quite good, and season 1 was a terrible hot mess. It took them way too long to actually make me care about key new characters in the show (we don't find out anything about Tosh and Owen until near the end of the second season and we really should have had that sooner) and the first season was really just throwing darts at aboard and hoping something sticks.
    When a good story comes along it shows the potential the series had, but it is mired with too much mediocre to bad stuff early on to give it legs. I'm still trying to figure out what Miracle Day is, really. Aside from ridiculous, I mean.

    Honestly surprised that you didn't put the Owen trilogy, sure the 1st episode is just decent and the 2nd is weakened by aged effects, but episode 3 alone is enough to make it my favourite Torchwood story.

    Kiss kiss Bang bang, They keep killing Suzie, and the final ep of season two. Yeah, it's a bit uneven, but it IS some of the greatest tv out there through how surprising it is. And no, I don't think you were too young for the love stories, maybe for the violence though? Oh, and what about when Gwen got married?

  • @Brixxter
    @Brixxter Před rokem

    I'm going to get bloody crucified for this, but I enjoyed Miracle Day more than CoE (although I still vastly preferred the single episode plot structure from S1 and S2 and that's not to say Miracle Day was particularly great). Yes, CoE is good. It just really wasn't for me. I had a constant feeling of dread while watching it, and not the good kind of dread. By the time Jack was forced to kill his grandson I just felt numb, horrified and quite frankly glad the series was over. Also, Capaldi as John Frobisher absolutely disgusted me which is funny to think about considering Capaldi is my favourite doctor. He played that slimy government official so well I just had to feel extremely uncomfortable whenever he was on screen. I guess much like CoE as a whole he was great, just really not for me.
