Honestly I do think it is one of the weaker episodes but I do still like it, pretty much for that whole "damage control" theme. It shows how the cast are still only human, they're not the doctor and miracles don't happen. People are always gonna die eventually, all they can do is make sure its the smallest number possible.
Day One is pretty terrible for an idea but I did appreciate that the episode took time to consider how someone like Carys would feel about her body being completely out of her control. Her pain and fear is put to the forefront, while in some other sci-fi it would be ignored (like she was already dead the whole time since being possessed) or re-written so she was enjoying it. Her body also isn't over-sexualized. She's gaunt, pale and shaking. Ignore the awkward sex cloud and its got some deep down introspection for the normal people who suffer in alien invasions apart from the protagonists.
That probably is the one salvageable aspect, but to be fair- if you had a premise like this and DIDN'T follow the sexual discovery of the teenage girl...it'd be a pretty obvious take missed. Good on you for seeing the light in it though. You''re right, Torchwood in general did a great job of realistically realising sci-fi/horror concepts on the life of normal people. It's what makes Slow Decay such a difficult read.
i liked most of them. i think Day one was a let down and i nearly stopped watching because of it, cyber women was okay but not great and miracle day definitely had ups and downs

DAVIS yeah, I do agree with a lot of your points but it was a good episode, fact is, Torchwood is dark. But admittedly stuff like day1 is a bit far. But every episode of Season 1 is worth it as each episode plays a role in establishing characters and dark themes. Except Small Worlds, nah miss that one. Only that one.
Well, I think Jack has a very forgiving nature and it is canon that he spent Ianto's suspension with him talking to him. But I think Jack learned from forgiving Ianto to forgive Tosh for bringing Mary in the hub in Greeks Bearing Gifts
I’m telling you now they should do this with Doctor who and Torchwood: Doctor who should do a Torchwood Children of earth where it’s one story but over several episodes. Torchwood should do 13 episodes of different story’s with an arc.
I mean, I remember liking Ghost Machine - I first watched up to season 4 of torchwood two years ago when I was fourteen - bc I think it was an interesting concept & plot, but from what I can remember, it maybe was an episode for a little later in the series when our characters were more fleshed out and knew each other better.

Not sure it was the best idea to do so before really hooking your audience, but hey ho, we all kept watching didn't we? Kudos to your choice of "Ghost Machine." While my hubby never ceases to enjoy Jack teaching Gwen about guns (oh christ, just f*ck already) the pacing of this episode is horrid. Some great moments, but not worth slogging through the whole 10 hours to get to them. Great list, really enjoying your channel. Cheers.
The concept of Ghost Machine (emotional events leaving an imprint) was how I explained the twelfth doctor remembering his past versions in heaven sent cause that was the only part of the episode that didn't make much sense for me.
Then Miracle Day just turned everything to crap again, well, it was OK, but I can’t exactly say that I’m going to watch it again anytime soon. The point is, compared to the previous two series, it’s crap.

cyberwoman was the first episode i watched. i was flipping through channels, way past my bed time, and landed on jack being electrocuted and i ended up staying to watch the rest and i had to know more.
I didn’t expect a near succinct list of the first half of season one but there ya go aha! That’s why I like your videos though, I don’t watch them to necessarily agree or disagree, I just like seeing your opinions on the franchise with some very comic moments as well.
Agreed, especially End of Days; but I really enjoyed Ghost in the Machine. Maybe it took me back to early Dr Who fantasies of time travelling and righting wrongs?
Having slogged through Miracle Day, I would highly recommend watching episode 7, 'Immortal Sins. Easily the best of that series by far, focusing entirely on Jack's past and his relationship with Gwen in the present. It also kept the new characters to a minimum, which was a positive. Genuinely felt like classic Torchwood in a series that, overall, missed the mark.
Ghost Machine and Cyberwoman are incredible. So is End of Days Cyberwoman is let down by the costume design but the doesn’t ruin the whole episode. End of days is ruined by Abadon but you can look past that
NGL I loved Ghost Machine and Small Worlds; I love a weird, dark concept so I can overlook questionable execution. Watch Miracle Day after Trump and Covid, it's A LOT better than we gave it credit for...
I always loved Miracle Day. It was my favourite part of Torchwood before COVID, and of course it still is after. I see a lot of people didn't appreciate it as much as I did, and I can see why, but whenever I do a rewatch it's the main thing I look forward to.
I loved up the build up in the end of days but the way he just defeated the monster by having it suck the energy out of him? in like the last five minutes of the episode was really disappointing.
I love all these episodes. Although I agree Miracle Day was a bit... Well I used to absolutely hate it and say it was not Torchwood but in hindsight it's an interesting story that I would have watched and enjoyed if it had nothing to do with Torchwood. Problem is it's too different from the Torchwood I'm used to and I just don't get on well with any of the new characters.
Hot take: Cyberwoman would be remembered as a great episode if they changed the costume and pterodactyl ending. The teleplay and the acting are quite good.
My top 5 worst 1. Random Shoes 2. Greeks Bearing Gifts 3. End Of Days 4. All of Miracle Day 5. Day one I actually think ghost machine and small worlds are decent, and even tho i put it at number 5 i still sort of enjoy day one because of the pure stupidity of it. Same with cyberwoman which would've been number 7 behind from out of the rain.
I know, I like it too. I do think there were some weak ones and that series 2 was overall way better, but I loved series 1, particularly episodes 6, 10, and 12.
I didn't hate Season 4. The premise was fine. It's main problem was that it was just much too long. It felt like a season of 24 where they had to keep cramming in enough running around and forced cliffhangers to fill the space.
irrevenant3 agreed. I think Miracle Day was a pretty damn good premise for a season. The whole American thing kinda pissed me off. And yeah uh.. I haven’t finished it. I got like half way in, to the flashback episode with Jack’s romance with that one guy that, I assume, did something with his DNA and did the miracle day stuff... idk. It’s a bit bombastic and poorly paced. Though I must say, the characters are quite good. The woman that got burnt in the camp.. well idk if it’s just me but I found it quite upsetting. She was quite likeable. And it was a horrible way to go out. That kinda stuff is why torchwood is so good. Shame it was in a mediocre series.
A-Ha I have found the miracle Day fan club may I join. Miracle Day is my second or favourite story in Torchwood and I think it's a very worthy successor to the spectacular children of earth story. like just go and watch the scene in the last episode where Rhys and Andy go and visit Gwen's father with the rest of the category 1s and tell me you don't feel something
Personally not my thing and didn’t feel like Torchwood but had a few good moments (especially the call back to Ianto that just made me cry like crazy).
Greeks bearing gifts has the most unsubtle transphobic lines in the history of the franchise being spoken by the 51st century omnisexual humanoid central character.
Ikr? Who let that be said on Tv? What salty ass writer though it was a good idea? What the hell lmao? Who thought this would make the least bit of sense? Anyways I still don’t consider that line canon and never will
@@AssholeTingler69 oof it’s been a while, but it boils down to Jack doing a speech about one of his guy friends at some point who started acting weird, then disappeared for a couple months and came back as a woman. Except Jack keeps calling her by her deadname and keeps using he/him. He also implies that it was a betrayal? Or something? He compares it to Tosh’s current situation and says something like “so now I tend to pay attention when friends start acting weird”
I think that when Lisa transplanted her brain into the pizza delivery woman's body, she was at her least dangerous, perhaps she could have been spared and kept under lock and key... maybe undergoing character development and becoming a possible future secret ally
Yes, you're the only one. :P Seriously, the episode had potential but it was impossible to take it seriously with her wearing a cyber-bikini. If you want to milk the emotional drama from the premise (and they did), then having the character look like 60's SF cheesecake fan service did *not* help.
I loved Small Worlds. I thought it was a very good episode, but then I like PJ Hammond stuff. I hated Miracle Day. It was so horribly American and lost all its Cardiff charm. Children of Earth was excellent and maybe that should have been the end of a series I really enjoyed, but we all have our own opinions.
5. Day One- I actually think that it’s a very immature and bad idea handled very well and maturely. 4. Ghost Machine- I actually think this one is genuinely good. 3.Cyberwoman- Not gonna lie there is some good stuff in this but the performance by the Cyberwoman is Fucking awful genuinely and just ruins it and that design is stupid as fuck. 2.Idk haven’t listened to it. 1.Yeh this finale makes no sense. It’s just messy where it could’ve been great.
You’ve never done that thing where you’re feeling really sad, so you get something to eat to comfort yourself, but then you start crying and end up eating and sobbing and choking all at the same time? I thought most people had done that at least once. Lol maybe my life has just kind of sucked.
Oh and I watched Cyberwoman when I was 11 so I beat you 😂 I love the episode even though I am fully aware it was made just so men could stare at a sexy Cyberwoman with flesh on show. The emotion in the characters is just so good though. It was originally meant to air later in series 1 after we had gotten to know Ianto better so it would be more of a shock but it was the only script ready for shooting for they had to bring it forward. I think had it come later it would have made more sense that they didn't just retcon Ianto.
_Cyberwoman_ would have been massively improved if Lisa had been given a decent design. Seriously, you have an opportunity to show how massively graphic and genuinely upsetting the Cybermen are under their outer skin… and you go with a porn parody costume.
All of these Stories are good Imo opinion especially Small Worlds as it establishes Jack for who he really is especially with the amazing scene when he let's Jaz go
@@pyromaniac2104 I wonder how it would have been received if it wasn't called Torchwood because there is loads of interesting things in it... and if it wasn't called Torchwood then I wouldn't have been constantly asking "Where the fuck is the Doctor, he has 2 companions from 2011, one of which is a nurse, so he should know about it and surely he wouldn't ignore something as big as Humanity becoming *immortal!"* Also they should have removed the sequel baiting end.
@@Jedi_Spartan_38 I don't think the sequel baiting was their fault I genuinely think the Russell T Davies had plans for a Torchwood season 5 but some production bullshit probably stopped that from happening
Jedi Spartan 38 “I wonder how it would have been received if it wasn’t called Torchwood” THIS. Look. I have problems with the plot of Miracle Day, and I have problems with how I’m constantly thinking “there is no way this would be how humans would react”, but I believe the reason why people hate Miracle Day so much, is that it just doesn’t feel like the same show. 3/5 of the main characters are dead. The hub and all the alien artefacts were destroyed. They’ve changed country. The episodes are not self contained. It doesn’t feel like TW anymore. The plot of Miracle Day could have worked as another show. Or, a much shorter, “yeah the plot is pretty much finished but we have characters arcs to complete before ending this story”, à la Toy Story 4. CoE worked because it was short and felt like the end of the “working for Torchwood” chapter in the characters’ lives. It felt like “alright we’re doing a big plot that will be the beginning of the end for the show and the TW institute”. MD should have been the conclusion to this- it should have been just a couple of episodes where Jack and Gwen have to work on one last case, while wrapping up their arcs before ending the show for good. Because really, there is no way you can destroy almost everything that’s characteristic of a show and expect to go on for many other seasons.
Glad to see lots of comments like Ghost Machine. Despite the chase sequence which is rather, rather pointless, yeah the script is pretty okay which you gave credit for. And it's timey wimey! Just dated quite a bit after all these years and so many stories including new who rehashing the same formula with just...much bigger budget.
Miracle Day shouldn't have been a Torchwood story, I think I would like it much better if it was just a CIA Thriller story without Gwen, Captain Jack, or Torchwood.
Cyberwoman always gets hated basically only cause of the stupid costume design. Ignoring that I found it quite atmospheric and a change of pace to other torchwood episodes (upon rewatch). It did need some further fallout/permanent changes to the dynamic following it, but that's more on the other episodes that borderline ignore it. Even in this video, it's included and all that is really said is "it looks dumb lol"
8:47 Talking about 'This is why I worry about the next era of Who...' You were right to worry. Series 11 + 12 easily the worst series of DW revival. Series 12 finale made me hate Chibnall even after all the good he did for Torchwood.
4:41 that council estate actually looks pretty nice for public housing. Of course, I’m an american who’s used to public housing being completely getto, so...
I watched the first two episodes then left for two years before returning because I hated that episode so much. Never rewatched it. Also in the early episodes it just felt like the team hated each other. Sure Gwen wouldn’t fit immediately but the others were always fighting or making snappy comments that felt too much like they just did not like each other, which allowed for some growth but meant they were less entertaining
Even though I like all Torchwood episodes in their own way I can see where you're coming from with almost all the entries on this list... HOWEVER you've never gotten through Miracle Day??? That is my second favourite Torchwood story only preceded by possibly children of Earth in fact personally I consider them equal I'm marathoned the entire 10 episode run and I fail to see what's cringy about it at all... no like genuinely enlightened me what is cringey about Miracle Day admittedly the Cult of the soulless plot line goes absolutely nowhere with the exception of being background dressing but apart from that... please help me out here
Basically Series 1... But I still like the franchise. Even if they’re bad I can laugh. Also, Cybermen punching things is the best. I wish they did that more. Shooting things is boring. Imagine electric punches and slaps XD
Other than series 4, my least favourite episode personally is Dead Man Walking from series 2. I just found the supernatural direction the show took off putting, as though Doctor Who has explored the Devil they always did it in a somewhat sci-fy fashion, whereas this introduced a straight up demon. Plus one of the worst moments in the shows history is when Owen wrestles with a CGI Death. Other than that there are moments throughout the first two series which aren't great and it was quite flawed overall...except series 3 cause that a straight up masterpiece.
Yes, I never really got happy with Torchwood. Some elements in the series are as brilliant as with the classical US series THE TWILIGHT ZONE from the Sixties other stories are somewhat totaly out of context and leave you puzzled.
I really shouldn't of watched this because you've criticized an audio drama I haven't even listened to yet. That makes me really sad because Ianto has always been and will always be my favourite Torchwood character. Besides I'm watching this video on the day after the 10th anniversary of his death. I was 11 when I watched that in 2009 and I was heartbroken for ages afterwards. And I didn't get to visit his shrine till a couple of years ago. I stuck my own letter up there but GD-L is probably never gonna read it coz it probably got taken away with a strong breeze.
I watched this show when I was 14? Or 15? And I thought wow so dark. I fucking loved it but retrospectively wow. It was a mess but, it was my mess. Yes there are bad episodes, I'll never disagree on that but damn. When the show was good it was a banger and half and some of the best sci fi television I've ever seen.
Huh...I actually think Small Worlds was one of the better stories. Yeah the cgi sucks but I really like the “we can’t win just minimize damage” theme.

My top 5 worst
1. Random Shoes
2. Greeks Bearing Gifts
3. End Of Days
4. All of Miracle Day
5. Day one
I actually think ghost machine and small worlds are decent, and even tho i put it at number 5 i still sort of enjoy day one because of the pure stupidity of it. Same with cyberwoman which would've been number 7 behind from out of the rain.
Gwen crying while eating pizza is a MOOD
I thought series 1 wasn't too bad! Why people are criticising it bewilders me.
I know, I like it too. I do think there were some weak ones and that series 2 was overall way better, but I loved series 1, particularly episodes 6, 10, and 12.
Lmao am I the only one who kind of liked season 4
@@pyromaniac2104 idk i loved miracle day i had no idea people hated it
Personally not my thing and didn’t feel like Torchwood but had a few good moments (especially the call back to Ianto that just made me cry like crazy).
Anyways I still don’t consider that line canon and never will
@@books2438 what'd they say ion remember
@@AssholeTingler69 oof it’s been a while, but it boils down to Jack doing a speech about one of his guy friends at some point who started acting weird, then disappeared for a couple months and came back as a woman. Except Jack keeps calling her by her deadname and keeps using he/him. He also implies that it was a betrayal? Or something? He compares it to Tosh’s current situation and says something like “so now I tend to pay attention when friends start acting weird”
@@books2438 lol
The second part of season 2 and seasons 3 and 4 were why I loved Torchwood but the ending of season 4 on a cliffhanger makes me a bit angry
Sam have u listened to aliens among us and if so could u give us ur thoughts with little spoilers
You can never have enough council estate
I think it is ironic that most of series 11 had short abrupt endings
Please don’t remind me about Arachnids
I think that when Lisa transplanted her brain into the pizza delivery woman's body, she was at her least dangerous, perhaps she could have been spared and kept under lock and key... maybe undergoing character development and becoming a possible future secret ally
I really like ghost machine
I was just thinking last night how poor and inconsistent Season One was.
I was alright with the sex cloud ep tbh
Amritpalh H me too. Like it was weird and had no meaning whatsoever, but it was funny lmao
I must be the only person in the world to like Cyberwoman When ever I type up worst torchwood episodes cyberwoman is always on ti
Oswin Games some sick fuck recommended it to me as my first episode, I really disliked it
Yes, you're the only one. :P
Seriously, the episode had potential but it was impossible to take it seriously with her wearing a cyber-bikini. If you want to milk the emotional drama from the premise (and they did), then having the character look like 60's SF cheesecake fan service did *not* help.
No I like it too. It's my second favourite episode 😂
I have seen Miracle Day...twice. Please just hold me.
Day One and Cyberwoman are terrible (affectionate) episodes. I know they're objectively not good but they're so much fun!
I thought ghost machine was amazing
It’s just messy where it could’ve been great.
miracle day is great it just goes on for far too long
You’ve never done that thing where you’re feeling really sad, so you get something to eat to comfort yourself, but then you start crying and end up eating and sobbing and choking all at the same time? I thought most people had done that at least once. Lol maybe my life has just kind of sucked.
Wow the ending of this video absolutely did age well😐🔥😂
Oh and I watched Cyberwoman when I was 11 so I beat you 😂 I love the episode even though I am fully aware it was made just so men could stare at a sexy Cyberwoman with flesh on show. The emotion in the characters is just so good though. It was originally meant to air later in series 1 after we had gotten to know Ianto better so it would be more of a shock but it was the only script ready for shooting for they had to bring it forward. I think had it come later it would have made more sense that they didn't just retcon Ianto.
Chris chibnal wrote day one which makes so much sense
Samuel Davis Have you watched Torchwood Miracle Day
_Cyberwoman_ would have been massively improved if Lisa had been given a decent design. Seriously, you have an opportunity to show how massively graphic and genuinely upsetting the Cybermen are under their outer skin… and you go with a porn parody costume.
As someone who has recently watched Torchwood, I just can't say stories were either good or bad
A Whovian I know got to Day one and didn't watch it again till season 3..He was scarred
All of these Stories are good Imo opinion especially Small Worlds as it establishes Jack for who he really is especially with the amazing scene when he let's Jaz go
"I have never finished merical day" oh how I envy you that
Why? it's my personal favourite alongside children of Earth what do you think is wrong with it?
I see you didn't update the description....
Gonna sneak in a recommendation for Coffee and Broken, two FANTASTIC Ianto audios. Go listen to em.
I find Jack the most amazing
Cyberwoman always gets hated basically only cause of the stupid costume design. Ignoring that I found it quite atmospheric and a change of pace to other torchwood episodes (upon rewatch). It did need some further fallout/permanent changes to the dynamic following it, but that's more on the other episodes that borderline ignore it. Even in this video, it's included and all that is really said is "it looks dumb lol"
8:47 Talking about 'This is why I worry about the next era of Who...'
You were right to worry. Series 11 + 12 easily the worst series of DW revival.
Series 12 finale made me hate Chibnall even after all the good he did for Torchwood.
My first thought to that sort of stuff is "And his first two episodes didn't set off red flags?"
I love End Of Days and Cyberwoman
4:41 that council estate actually looks pretty nice for public housing. Of course, I’m an american who’s used to public housing being completely getto, so...
I love End Of Days tbh
Oh what do you know the two worst episodes were written by chibby wibby
But also many of the best.
Series 1 was fantastic what are you talking about
Stories that follow Ianto are bad? We just ignore Fall to Earth then? Interesting.
Since then ex machina came out too, and that story kicks ass as well
Even though I like all Torchwood episodes in their own way I can see where you're coming from with almost all the entries on this list... HOWEVER you've never gotten through Miracle Day??? That is my second favourite Torchwood story only preceded by possibly children of Earth in fact personally I consider them equal I'm marathoned the entire 10 episode run and I fail to see what's cringy about it at all... no like genuinely enlightened me what is cringey about Miracle Day admittedly the Cult of the soulless plot line goes absolutely nowhere with the exception of being background dressing but apart from that... please help me out here
pyromaniac Top comment! Will watch someday!
No one has mentioned the amazing cars like did you see that nsx and owens s2000 like damn they're some nice cars
imo the only bad episode of torchwood is from out of the rain
Who did children of earth cause that was near damn perfect
Max Dickson Russell t Davies! Top writer!
Yes, I never really got happy with Torchwood. Some elements in the series are as brilliant as with the classical US series THE TWILIGHT ZONE from the Sixties other stories are somewhat totaly out of context and leave you puzzled.
Season 1 was very uneven but they got it right in Season 2.
0:28 As a girl I find this relatable
I like miracle day, but they ruined it with all the “star power”. Could have done without nana visitor imho
Eps 3-8 of miracle day
I really shouldn't of watched this because you've criticized an audio drama I haven't even listened to yet.
Torchwood was a great show. Check out videos on what happened to the show...
Akansha Biswas Series 1 is a mess I felt cool for watching. Series 2 onwards is almost universally great sci-fi.
