I'll admit it, I would have loved it if in The Wedding of River Song River had said, "I've sent a message everywhere, to the future and the past, to the beginning and the end of everything - The Doctor is in Distress, please answer his S.O.S"
I was a fan in the 80s in the US and we didn't get a lot of Big Finish productions. We did have the novels. Fortunately Doctor in Distress stayed on the other side of the pond. Yikes!!

I'm only a casual Who fan, but is interesting to me to see the parallels between the waning days of Classic Who and the final season of Star Trek TOS. Both were shows struggling with slashed budgets, changed time-slots, tumultuous relationships with the network, a loss in the best writers, and showrunners making dubious calls. Even Doctor in Distress almost reads as an attempt to invoke the kind of fan movement that saved TOS from being canceled after season 2, but coming across as less passionate efforts by the fanbase, and more a tactless call for charity from the public. What's funny is that while Trek's season 3 drop in quality hampered a repeat attempt at rescuing it, Who appeared to actually be improving somewhat and developing a direction before being canceled. And of course both would be sustained by outside show media in the wilderness periods, with the fan conventions and zines keeping ST alive and all sorts of printed/audio material allowing a soft rebirth for many of latter maligned/marginalized Doctors.
Fantastic comment. Yes, Doctor Who certainly regained its balance right at the end...but the BBC just had other plans by that point. Though i've never followed Trek, the books i've read on the fan culture are very similar and just as boundary-breaking. Thanks for actually contributing to the conversation, like many here seem to be incapable of.
The culture of both shows proved to be significant and groundbreaking during those periods for different reasons. I think Who endured a lot because of the unwritten rule of "canon is what you make of it" The very tone of the show's premise allowed for an idea that that the Virgin New Adventures, Comics, and Big Finish could have all happened, some of it, or none at all. Continuity lockouts, arguments about what does or does not count; things that have plagued too many fandoms to name never affected Who to the same degree because of the kind of show it was. As a result I believe it allowed for a greater investment in an EU far more than other franchises because it a very real sense it was as ground level significant to fans as the show itself. With Trek it was a triumph of general viewer created content specifically. The conventions, the magazines, the modern emergence of fanfiction,; it was one of the most notable examples of fans picking up a show and not just keeping it alive but expanding its reach far beyond what anyone expected. Cons, cosplay, fan films, etc existed in nascent form here and there, but Trek centralized and streamlined to such a degree that a lot of the common pillars of how modern media fandom operates feel rooted, even indirectly from the model ST created in the 70s.
MerelyAFan "Canon is what you make of it" may as well have been the title of my recently submitted dissertation. Could not agree with the sentiment more. It saved Who. It's the very reason the show can reinvent like nothing else. Love it.
I'm a 51 year old American from Texas. I am SO happy to learn that a younger, English fan has the same opinion of JNT that I do. I knew something had gone wrong when I saw the revamped opening of the 1980 season. I felt like the theme had gone from classic, skipped rock 'n roll, and went straight to Disco (which was almost dead by then anyway.) Then the new Tom Baker scarf and get-up. Ughhhh. I went to a Dr. Who convention in Houston TX in 1986 and got to meet Colin Baker. I asked him (being a cocky 18 year old) who the hell put Turner in charge. He stifled a chuckle, gave me a look that seemed to say "Good Question" and answered, "It's a long story."

As someone who remembers 1985, I truly felt Doctor in Distress was horrid. Having said that, it also wasn't an official BBC project, but was instead put together by Ian Levine. It just seems official because he got a number of the current and former stars of the show to appear on the recording (and the video). In contrast, 1993 was so much worse for several reasons. First, after watching the program sink slowly for nearly a decade and then watch it disappear from the screen in 1989, it was finally clear that nobody was going to take up the reigns and produce the show again on television (for the foreseeable future, if ever). Second, it was a major anniversary for the program, but wasn't getting nearly the same attention that the 10th and 20th anniversaries received. And finally, Dimensions in Time proved that even getting some "new" Doctor Who for the anniversary would be an utter disappointment... so much worse than anyone could have imagined. I truly felt embarrassed for having been a fan. It took a long time (well over a decade) before I ever bothered watching another episode again. The only bright point is that when I did come back, all of the old episodes seemed fresh again. So that's something.
It's truly amazing to me how despite all the issues with the JNT era and the show dying, we managed to get Season 26 which is in my opinion one of the best seasons in the show's history. Also it isn't just great, but it also does a phenomenal job looking forward. Curse of Fenric and Survival delve into Ace's backstory and home life that would become standard in the new era. Ghost Light's central theme was about accepting the inevitability of change. Perfect way to leave the show for the new era to pick it up later
Sometimes I want to glance into a universe where the executives at the BBC didn’t have out for the show in the 80s and just wonder how long would’ve Colin Baker stayed on the show if he could.
My personal least favourite period is actually the 2008-2010 specials. It ruined Tennant's run and made him just look petulant and whiny, and the writing was so self-gratifying, to me, that it ruined it all.
Man, I really gotta disagree with your opinion on series 7. I can understand frustration with endings leaning towards deus ex machina, but it's entirely overidden by the interaction and intrigue and growth of the characters. While many don't like it, Clara's set up as the "impossible girl" is great for her as a character because it plays a role in changing the Doctor's perspective on her. While he initially only she's her as an intersting enigma, throughout their witty and sarcastic and just fun to watch interactions it slowly becomes a much more human appreciation for her, culminating in the Day and Time of the Doctor.
That's fair. His era was my childhood and delivered some of the show's most iconic staples and moments. It's just going by the man's career and what crew and cast around him have said. Guy sounds like a huge mixed bag who undeniably did some damage to the show at times. Thanks for the chill comment.
Respect to your opinion on what you thought was the lowest point. I thought one of the stories in the twelfth doctor's seasons would've made it instead, as great Peter Capaldi was as an actor (and doctor) the stories dropped noticeably in quality. Really glad you didn't pull the (very) common reason of "SJW agenda", it's becoming annoying. I had never realised it was 6 times in a row there were ass-pulls to end the episode for Matt's last season... it's a really great point you bring up.
The lowest point for me was series 8 because it felt very dull and forgettable, the sense of adventure was replaced with soap opera drama when they focused too much on clara and danny when they should have focused on establishing peter capaldi.
S8 is a lot better in retrospect. Besides the last two episodes, S10 is totally forgettable. Too bad, I loved Capaldi, just wish he has more consistent writing.
I agree I can’t even remember any of those episodes from that season, it only redeemed itself when capaldi came on and was just amazing and Clara got a little better
I liked S8 because of how high quality each episode was. But I didn't like the Danny Pink arc either (they didn't flesh him out enough for the audience to relate to him). The Doctor-Companion relationship with Clara and Twelve seriously reached amazing heights in S9. Loved that.
I can relate to my reconsidering of Doctor Who during 2013, 7B was pretty lame and The Time of the Doctor confused the fuck out of me. Day of the Doctor was it's only saving grace.
Are you kidding? I bloody love all of Series 7 and it's pretty much my most fave series for consistently fun and entertaining stories. For me the absolute low point was series 3's ending with that stupid CGI goblin Doctor and then turning him into frickin floaty space jesus (and the less said about Rose's constant comebacks and the whole series 4 creepy meta-crisis Doctor sex doll clone the better). And then when the godawful Simm Master (the ONLY time he portrayed it well was when he teamed up with Missy in series 10) returns later on and turns everybody in the world into his clones. I absolutely detest so much of the RTD era and it was the 11th and 12th Doctor eras that restored my fave in one of my fave shows (i love so much about the classic stuff too).
If you think 2013 was the lowest point of the show... I think you are potty. The lowest point is the end of Colin's run and the beginning of Sylvester's the corporation was trying to kill it. In 2013 it went out of its way to celebrate it. And fashionable as it is to knock Moff.. It's just lazy. Late JNT and early RTD are worse than any point in his run.
As soon as I clicked on this video I knew I was gonna hear, "Series 7 part 2 is the worst of doctor who." As so many people say. I honestly cannot see why people hate them so much. That part of the show is my absolute favorite set of episodes. I looooove nightmare in silver and journey to the center of the Tardis. I love everyhting about it. Its the best series for Matt Smith and the best series for Clara. For me, she just got worse with Capaldi. But again, thats just my incredibly unpopular opinion.
Yeah I remember watching series 7 part 2 and basically hating every episode back to back, I’ve not heard many people talk about that crazy drop in quality so it’s nice to hear someone else reiterate my feelings hahaha
I started to think I was too old for Doctor Who in 2016 when we had that year-long break and I started to discover new shows like Arrow, Game of Thrones and Black Mirror which were a lot more graphic than what I was used to but then when they did the 2016 Christmas Special I realised how it isn't a kid's show but it isn't an adult show, it's a family show and I think that's the reason it's been running for so long now. Tbh now with Jodie's new series I'm started to feel a bit old for the show because it has a very CBBC Sarah Jane Adventures overly friendly vibe to it but I still enjoy it.
As a person who came into the fandom as an adult...I see the franchise in a completely different light than most people. It's all Doctor Who to me. Some good, some bad. End of story. No reason to be pissy about any of it. But god, this fandom is pissy. REALLY pissy.
I think 'Doctor in Distress' is the definition of so bad it's good. It's in hindsight now so we don't have to cringe at what our favourite series has become. It just makes me smile as it's another unique part of its history. 2013 has definitely been the low-point of the modern series for me too although unlike you, the specials only cement my distaste.
Both Series 7B and Series 10 felt dull at many points. It felt like they were rushing 11 and 12 out the door as fast as they could. Some episodes on rewatch make me realize that all tension I had was wasted away because if the Doctor was on a ticking time bomb then they must make him *d a r k e r* and more *g g r r u u m m p p y y.* Half the time it felt like 7b and 10 were both the same series. In my honest opinion Doctor Who turned into the CW's Flash and how in Season 4 of the Flash people were debating if it was good or bad. It gives you that uneasy feeling.
12 was darker and more grumpy in Series 10? Did you completely skip Series 8? I'll agree with 11 but what a reaction during the 50th when he found out Gallifrey was saved!
Series 7B (as well as Series 7 as a whole) is the lowest point. Series 8 was a return to form after the *MISTAKE* that was the Matt Smith era. Series 9 is Capaldi's weakest, but I'd still take it over Series 6 and 7. Series 10 was, like Series 8, a return to form.
xMedian Clara was a bad companion, she never made sense. She always changed all the time and you couldn’t really like her the way you would with with Rose etc. It was the writers fault not the actor
@@LukasOfTheLight How lmao. Rose was the most human character in the first series. Just because she wasn't a Mary Sue doesn't mean she is a bad character.
If it weren't for the 2009 specials, series 7 would be my least favourite season of Doctor who. Colin is my favourite Doctor so his era isn't a problem for me, though trial of a time Lord was disappointing.
Dihydrogen Monoxide it's Ok, like with most of new who, the on the nose dialogue choosing to tell us something rather than show is annoying. Plus it makes the Daleks look incompetent.
Another brilliant video! *BUT*... “Colin Baker’s third and final season”... Nup! Colin Baker was only the full-season Doctor for Seasons 22 and 23. His first story was the last one at the end of Season 21 (Davison’s third and final season, just for the record). Pedantic? Only if it doesn’t matter if I call Series 7A Series 7B instead ;)
In my opinon one of the biggest issues with 80s who in that moment was the script editor Eric Saward. He didnt believe Colin Baker should of been cast as the 6th doctor and was angry with JNT's decision to cast Colin without consulting him, which in my opinon, lead to him letting some scripts such as the twin dillema (a script which needed rewritten) pass by, leading to a 6th doctor who was dislikeable in hia first appearence . Not only that but during Trail of a Timelord he quit his job and wouldnt allow his script to be used for the final part. Overall great video as a lways though and would love to see you talk about the 6th doctor as despite an unfortunate start, he is one of the best incarnations of the character in my opinion.
That's weird I would've said that the 50th anniversary was new who's lowest point due to it retconning any changes made by RTD to update the series because Moffat was a fanboy
For me, the worst period was, as you say, 2013. The last years of Matt Smith, I sadly stopped watching and this ran on into Peter Capaldi. Bill Potts with the Doctor, now there was a great season !! I loved McCoy from 1988-89. Jodie Whitaker..... Loved her series from day one. Yes, the worst years for me were the end of Matt Smith and the beginning of Peter Capaldi. Apart from that, I love the show and like you, it's the only show I actively watch on tv. Joey, 43 years old.
Here is a controversial opinion(Deep breath) I disliked series 7A, why, well lets just say by that point Amy and Rory had gotten boring for me and (part from a Town called mercy) every episode felt boring and dull. Series 7b felt like some fresh air but not a lot.
When I met Colin Baker at a fan expo I asked him where he got the jacket, and he said "from my nightmares"
Oh that's perfect
I've met him too once in Nottingham. Sound lad he was
mini dwarfdude same in Blackpool he was quite nice
That’s beautiful and iconic.
But it is so fabulous!
I'll admit it, I would have loved it if in The Wedding of River Song River had said, "I've sent a message everywhere, to the future and the past, to the beginning and the end of everything - The Doctor is in Distress, please answer his S.O.S"
That's a little unnecessary because all of time was happening at once anyways.

You know how to make 10 minutes fly by
Thanks babe xo
My personal least favourite period is actually the 2008-2010 specials. It ruined Tennant's run and made him just look petulant and whiny, and the writing was so self-gratifying, to me, that it ruined it all.
True actually I agree
Man, I really gotta disagree with your opinion on series 7. I can understand frustration with endings leaning towards deus ex machina, but it's entirely overidden by the interaction and intrigue and growth of the characters. While many don't like it, Clara's set up as the "impossible girl" is great for her as a character because it plays a role in changing the Doctor's perspective on her. While he initially only she's her as an intersting enigma, throughout their witty and sarcastic and just fun to watch interactions it slowly becomes a much more human appreciation for her, culminating in the Day and Time of the Doctor.
Another mistake Styre.
If anyone gets that reference, I respect you.
JNT's era was still better than recent years in Doctor Who's history. At least in my opinion.
That's fair. His era was my childhood and delivered some of the show's most iconic staples and moments. It's just going by the man's career and what crew and cast around him have said. Guy sounds like a huge mixed bag who undeniably did some damage to the show at times. Thanks for the chill comment.
There's one in every crowd!
I enjoyed this video very much, quite thought-provoking, thank you
Friend: Hey pass me the Aux Cord.
Me: You better not play any trash.
Friend: *plays Doctor in Distress*
Me: *chocks them out*
I actually liked 2013 for doctor who. When I recently went to rewatch series 7 I actually enjoyed it quite a bit!
My capaldu rewatxh made me appreciate more him
"Can you imagine being a Doctor Who fan in 1985?" I was there mate, I was there. I'll show you my emotional scars if you don't believe me :(
What happened to you?
Respect to your opinion on what you thought was the lowest point.
I thought one of the stories in the twelfth doctor's seasons would've made it instead, as great Peter Capaldi was as an actor (and doctor) the stories dropped noticeably in quality.
Really glad you didn't pull the (very) common reason of "SJW agenda", it's becoming annoying.
I had never realised it was 6 times in a row there were ass-pulls to end the episode for Matt's last season... it's a really great point you bring up.
I'm sorry but when "the doctor in Distress" came on, I had Star wars Holiday special flash backs
What is Doctor Who’s lowest point. When it isn’t on.
The lowest point for me was series 8 because it felt very dull and forgettable, the sense of adventure was replaced with soap opera drama when they focused too much on clara and danny when they should have focused on establishing peter capaldi.
I completely agree! Thank you!
I agree. I only remember the names of about 4 episodes
Loved that.
That song is the most 80’s thing out there lol
I can relate to my reconsidering of Doctor Who during 2013, 7B was pretty lame and The Time of the Doctor confused the fuck out of me. Day of the Doctor was it's only saving grace.
I think series 7 is grossly underrated.
Now I'm going to have Doctor in Distress in my head forever. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Great Video btw
I'd have to disagree with your opinion on Season 7 but good vid!
same here
Doctor in Distress is a highpoint and I'm proud to have it on my iPod.
Exactly
Season 7 is light years better than season 11 .
Don't I say...in-video that Moffat is my favourite showrunner?
What episode is 3:08 from? I don't think i've ever seen that clip //:
As soon as I clicked on this video I knew I was gonna hear, "Series 7 part 2 is the worst of doctor who." As so many people say. I honestly cannot see why people hate them so much. That part of the show is my absolute favorite set of episodes. I looooove nightmare in silver and journey to the center of the Tardis. I love everyhting about it. Its the best series for Matt Smith and the best series for Clara. For me, she just got worse with Capaldi. But again, thats just my incredibly unpopular opinion.
Same it's better than series 6 or hell bent and definitely better than series 11 and 12
I like Sylvester McCoy’s run as the doctor. It’s sad because I think it sort of went up again right before it finished
You're never too old for Doctor Who!
Yeah I remember watching series 7 part 2 and basically hating every episode back to back, I’ve not heard many people talk about that crazy drop in quality so it’s nice to hear someone else reiterate my feelings hahaha
It was bizarre, since I loved 7A. It was enough to push me away from the programme in a big way.
Tbh now with Jodie's new series I'm started to feel a bit old for the show because it has a very CBBC Sarah Jane Adventures overly friendly vibe to it but I still enjoy it.
i LOVE how fair you are, i'm so sick of people shitting on doctor who with literally no argument backing it up
You mean like with series 7?
I'm going to start collecting the eighth Doctor audios again.I want Darkeyes and Ravenous like now!!!!!
What's the soundtrack that starts at 7:29??
omg i found this video again i lost it for so long
Plus I subbed 💁🏽♂️
Literally 3 months later, Stubagful considered if he was too old for the show after Series 11..
As a person who came into the fandom as an adult...I see the franchise in a completely different light than most people. It's all Doctor Who to me. Some good, some bad. End of story. No reason to be pissy about any of it.
But god, this fandom is pissy. REALLY pissy.
A great quote from the CZcamsr Josh Snares, "We're DW fans, we have to be upset at everything"
Oh no Doctor in distress is on Spotify
Omg I wasn't ready for Doctor in distress
Series 3, 6 and 7 are the most underrated imo.
The answer to the title is season 11(new series).
Wrong - it's any episode where Tennant appeared as the Doctor.
Lowest point of Doctor Who is now number 13! The worst Doctor, script, music, acting and story lines I have ever seen!
Series 7 was one of my fave series of all time.
12 was darker and more grumpy in Series 10? Did you completely skip Series 8?
I'll agree with 11 but what a reaction during the 50th when he found out Gallifrey was saved!
I heavily disagree. Series 8 was the bad one. 7B was fantastic, fuck you, and 10 was perhaps the best Capaldi series of the 3.
Doctor who hit it peak when doctor screw came out
Bang on
Also, nice video. :) I agree that the latter part of Series 7 was sorta... eh - didn't stop me from watching, though.
Now. It’s now.
Whats the lowest point?
Me: Right now!!!!!
never heard this one before
Me: "Ah this guy seems to be a very relatable, sensible Dr who fan whose opinions I agre-"
*CLARA IS MY FAVOURITE COMPANION*
Me: "...well, never mind"
Have you watched peter capaldi?
xMedian Clara was a bad companion, she never made sense. She always changed all the time and you couldn’t really like her the way you would with with Rose etc. It was the writers fault not the actor
Max Love I hated Rose.
@@LukasOfTheLight How lmao. Rose was the most human character in the first series. Just because she wasn't a Mary Sue doesn't mean she is a bad character.
When the Doctor turned into Dobby the Elf.
HiDesert004 if we’re talking specific moments? Yeah. Probably. Up there.
I just couldnt stop laughing!
Before watching he video I think of Love and Monsters and the Tsuranga Connundrum.
It's after the worst days that the best days come, which is the only hope that series 13 and the next era has.
If it weren't for the 2009 specials, series 7 would be my least favourite season of Doctor who. Colin is my favourite Doctor so his era isn't a problem for me, though trial of a time Lord was disappointing.
Galactic yo yo what about the Waters Of Mars, I love that episode!
Dihydrogen Monoxide it's Ok, like with most of new who, the on the nose dialogue choosing to tell us something rather than show is annoying. Plus it makes the Daleks look incompetent.
So, is "Doctor in Distress" the Doctor Who equivalent of The Star Wars Holiday Special?
Wait the Celestial Toymaker had WHAT
Another brilliant video!
Am I really the only one who thinks “Doctor in Distress” is a bit of a bop?
A good portion of its lyrics and vocals are pretty teeth clenching, but it's definitely memorable. The instrumental version has a pretty good vibe.
Doctor in Distress gives me pain
The Tsuranga Conundrum is
Clara Oswald's ending was botched. Twice. How does one botch a companion exit twice?!?!
I don't know, Dimensions in Time is my pick for the absolute worst of Doctor Who. I've seen it and I had to suppress the urge to puke.
Fun fact, Grade actually LIKES the revival era... Not sure we forgive you Michael!
It's not been yet. It's coming soon.
I have to disagree with your views on series 7b, I loved that series and is probably my favourite. Nonetheless great video!
Series 11: hold my beer
Well for modern who
Meanwhile series 12
That's weird I would've said that the 50th anniversary was new who's lowest point due to it retconning any changes made by RTD to update the series because Moffat was a fanboy
Season 11?
Whats the first song?
"Remembering Clara" an unreleased series 10 track!
To be fair I actually like Colin’s singing in the Big Finish story Doctor Who and The Pirates.
Hey, Capaldi is great.
Here is a controversial opinion(Deep breath) I disliked series 7A, why, well lets just say by that point Amy and Rory had gotten boring for me and (part from a Town called mercy) every episode felt boring and dull. Series 7b felt like some fresh air but not a lot.
I was 16 in 1985 when "Doctor in Distress" came out, and of course I bought the record immediately without even listening to it first!
I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.
just wait... timeles child is next
F no why did this happen Damn the 18 and 90s doctor who
7:09 The Doctor got sexually assulted by Casandra in New Earth lol. Seemed rather fine with it though.
The Trial was Colin’s 2nd season. He was fired before he could get any more than 2.
I’d say the Capaldi years are the lowest point because barely any stories stand out to me in that era.
