When it actually dawns on New Who showrunners they have the means to do their own Five Doctors story, if they can't get Ecclestone back, McGann could definitely be used in his stead. The 8th Doctor walks that line between Classic and New that none of the others before really can.

Paul McGann's my favourite actor to play the role, by far. He was basically the mind-bleep Doctor. Going into a story, expect that reality itself will be turned on its head, and that not everyone will leave as sane as they went in. Forget twist endings -- McGann's were twist stories.
(Also, Charley is my favourite companion of all time -- TV stories included -- with Evelyn a very close second. From Storm Warning to The Girl Who Never Was, her stories were nearly all gems. And then there's her arc with [SPOILER]. Great stuff.)

Lucie bleedin' Miller was my childhood. (Which is crazy to think, but can you believe the Eighth Doctor Adventures line is around 14 years old?) It breaks my heart for you to dunk on her like this.
Admittedly, when I go back to listen to those audios, they're more camp than I remember and nothing compared to Charley's run. But there are some absolutely phenomenal standouts, including the first time an audio drama made my cry uncontrollably - Lucie Miller/To The Death, her two-part final story, which is as heartbreaking as it sounds. Her stories can reach some astounding narrative heights, and it's a pity that people who don't like her very much can't really experience them.

The repeating Doctor categories seem to be...
Grumpy old man (Hartnell, C.Baker, Tennant version 2)
Childish clown favours bow tie (Troughton, McCoy, Smith)
Hard serious man favours black and white Victorian style outfits (Pertwee, McGann, Capaldi)
Toothy grinning madman (T.Baker, Eccleston, Whittaker)
Bland handsome nice guy with a neat suit (Davison, Tennant version 1)
Notice how each incarnation is like a rebellion in opposition to an aspect of the previous one. And after the first "rebirth" then each five lifetimes is like one standard lifetime from child to old man, with a lot of changes along the way.

David Tennant’s definitely the most conventionally attractive Doctor with Paul McGann a very close second, Peter Capaldi’s too silver fox-y to not be third, Jodie Whittaker’s absolutely gorgeous so she deserves fourth, and if you ignore the outfit then you can see why Colin Baker is definitely fifth.

My favourite line so far is "The Doctor must be... He must stand trial" as it really sells the idea that the Daleks are trying to fake the whole idea of being allies but it's not in their nature to even pretend to have a diverse range of emotions. It's definitely a better representation of the Daleks than they have been getting on TV recently.

I love the Eighth Doctor for being a romantic doctor, but not in the lovey-dovey sense. I feel like he's more of a poet-like character rooted in the Romanticism movement of the late 1700s and early 1800s-- even his costume matches this! I want another doctor like this again.

    • @SamyulDavis
      @SamyulDavis  Před 5 lety +2

You nailed this perfectly. He's a rather cold doctor with a romantic aesthetic. It's actually bizarre we haven't had another Victorian-themed Doctor in the new series, it used to be the default. Imagine if Whittaker had gone for that angle, that way it could be tried&tested and seem new at the same time!

I liked Mary as a companion, I felt she complimented McGann's Edwardian adventurer Doctor better than the others myself. It's just a shame they didn't do many more stories with her.

The Conscript actually isn't bad. I'd argue it is genius in that it's small scale keeps it from making the universe smaller. And it's a glimpse into rebellious Academy Doctor. This isn't BF's "Gallifrey".
If you're hesitating on the box set because of that one story, my advice is go for it.

they really should have him on tv or crossover with the newest Doctor would be neat , now granted Im a guy from across the pond but # 8 was probably the best Doctor in my opinion as far as the look of the Tardis went and they could somehow visit him before the events of the timewar, which I think was epic by the way!And like you say hes still young they should utilise him that would be so cool or at least for us fans cause I dont speak for anybody else at this point but who is the best stuff on TV...

McGann is the Doctor that entered the Time War and fought the Dalekes , that had the guts to say enough and battle , no more running , the first doctor that (and that is my own thoughts had 2 console interiors before Matt Smith had his 2 . The 1996 one was too posh and well build to be used in warfare and the time that the Doctor can reach to the old console , he might have lost his life , and so the dirty dingy interior that the War Doctor/9/10 had taken shape from the McGann era onward . A good man going to War does not need a push interior just the bear necesities and that interior of the War Doctor i like to belive came from his era . + The Tardis changing mid battle would be considered a hassle to the War Doctor, as the controls change with the enviroment as well and he used the Tardis as it was left from MgGanns era ) . Dont know if that is cannon in any way , but to me it makes best sense .

  • @RileyScarletSpiderGirl

Even if we didn't see the 8th Doctor more on screen outside of a bad movie and a excellent mini episode I'm just grateful we got Paul McGann as the Doctor he's a splendid actor one of the finest to be in the role and Big Finish made the 8th Doctor truly one of the finest Doctors.

I think Mcgann is the doctor in many ways. He could have just stoped with the movie but he came back and has done so much to shape the doctor to how own. Like he has Charlie, Lucy, the two comic companies and he’ll even Mary Sheri as a one time companion. Not to mention his acting on audio and the movie are great.

  • @silverchan9999

If I remember correctly, When I first saw his Doctor, I thought he looked like Beethoven, and I think that's why I gave him that nickname, I actually really love McGann's Doctor because of how mysterious he is, due to not getting a full series on screen and I honestly hope the rumors about the a TV Show is true and that Disney doesn't F***k it up, which most likely would happen anyway, BUT I DON'T CARE!

I live how 8 despite appearing in a movie and minisode (like 3 hours total) he is longest Doctor since he started audios in 2001 and still going strong while other Doctors stories are somewhere in between their 3 year run and are like fanservice in 8 case there is no tenure to begin with so everything happening is not just a good story for those who miss said Doctor but ongoing Cannon episodes like 9 10 or others but with no limit
    also 8 Doctor is dark
people say 10 story is about him slowly going insane but my god 8 whole story is him breaking again and again until he gives up and becomes warrior he goes from happy romantic hero to a broken spiteful man who travels not to see the universe but to find hope in it to cling to only to get it destroyed

I watched the Doctor Who TV movie when it aired. It was on a Tuesday night on Fox in the US. That was still a time that Fox was willing to be experimental but they did have legit hit shows on air. But a Tuesday night during Mays sweeps was poor timing and there was no promotional support for this movie to speak of. If there had been some time travel in the story, it might have landed better.

@DAVIS RE BIG FINISH STORIES You're not fecking kidding. I've just checked on Spotify and there's ENDLESS and I mean infinite endless stories uploaded by many users.
I'm still going to buy Big Finish. But wow. This literally left me with my jaw dropped and my mouth open in amazement. Thank you for the heads up. Because otherwise I'd have never thought of looking for them.
The 8th Doctor is, ironically, the most mysterious and inaccessible Doctor.
If the 7th was the one who kept his thoughts and plans to himself to win against his enemies then the 8th is open to people while keeping himself at a distance in an emotional way?
He has this questioning quality to him where he coaxes people to reveal themselves to him.
He's an explorer but I always get the feeling events come to him rather than him getting involved in them.
Since the 5th and 7th Doctors are all aware of the Time War in different ways PERHAPS the 8th is the way he is because he knows deep down time is running out?
One day he'll be given a choice and he'll never be the same again.

the 7th doctor wasn’t killed in the alley. gallifreyan biology is far too resilient for that. he was killed in the operating room, where they cut him open like a butcher. that, combined with the usage of anesthesia, almost killed him for good. to be honest he lucked out, he only ended up with temporary amnesia.
