In this video art lesson I cover how to paint thunderstorm clouds with lightning. I show you how to blend a range of cool colors into warm colors in this dramatic landscape painting. I used various paint brushes which I cover throughout the video lesson.
Materials used:
- Golden fluid acrylic paint (titanium white, carbon black, primary cyan, light blue permanent (liquitex), quinacridone red, cadmium orange)
- Water for mixing into the paints (thinning) and washing brushes
- 16x20" stretched canvas
About the painting:
I love exploring the wide open range land. Whether it's the great plains area or a sweeping sagebrush valley between mountain ranges, I'm always inspired by these areas. When a storm like this rolls across the wide open land, it's a sight that is rarely forgotten.

Hi! My name is Robert. I am 67 y/o and am a beginner painter. Most of my life I have dreamed of being a painter. But, I could NEVER see me as an artist. But, through watching you paint it makes me feel uplifted.
All I can do is practice. Thank you for all that you do. Do your ideas come off the top of your head or is it inspired by photos? You are the BEST!!!
God bless,
Robert
🎉😅
Me 71 been painting on an off Just paint daily will see that change
2023. 02... Thank you, Chuck, for your help in reacquainting myself to painting on canvas. I have not painted on a small canvas since I was a teenager, and now I am...well, older than dirt. Acrylic is a new canvas medium, and I love that you also use other mediums and oil. The results are fabulous. Have a great day, everyone.
Sincerely I like your style because of that natural feeling u give to a painting . No need in fine details , just art . Congrats
Spectacular storm clouds!!!
Seriously this is inspiring and im not just saying that. This has taught me that the only thing you can do in life is the skills that you were meant to use . Yeah it may not be perfect right now but each time you do these things your craft just gets better. And im talking about myself here because your art its fantastic. Its investing that time . Id sooner be doing these kinds of things than just having a job.
Such a dramatic skyscape! Love your teaching technique! Cannot wait to try this on my own paintings!
Your ease and technique are just incredible, like your reduction process, then it changes in moments. I have a commissioned piece, and watching these vids, have changed my entire approach. Amazing
Storms are one thing I miss most when winter is here!! Love this painting!
Thanks Wendy!

amazing!! thank you for explaining the steps.
Buy a fine mist spray bottle $3.99 or so from any art supplu. when painting starts to tack up spray a fine mist of water over painting and you can extend blending time.
I didn’t thank of that! Thank you!!
@@maddy1255 clouds only come out realistic when you paint them from nature.

Thank you for this tutorial. My version pales in comparison to yours! But this was extremely helpful, especially for a beginner like me

You should try oil
AMAZING!
superbe!!! merci beaucoup!!
At time stamp 34:43, dealing with fast drying paint, wet the brush, wipe off the excess and feather out your base. Doing this will allow you to get past the dry paint struggle, it does for me anyway. Love your projects, thanks for sharing.
wish I could do that
May God bless u.tnks for sharing
Wow that;s perfect
awesome!!!
Thank you,I learned alot!
I follow you on Facebook and I love your work! We've talked before, I'm logged in on my husband's youtube right now though lol. I've been asked to do a commission piece for someone of stormy clouds and I was so pleased to see that you have a video! I'm using your video to help me in my painting. I'm going for a turquoise sky. I'll probably go get something to help with blending. Beautiful job and thanks for the tips!
Awesome! Great to have you here and glad you like the videos!!! No problem
Wonderful.... awesome....

Maravilloso 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
When shading over the highlights, how do you make a “transparent layer” of paint? Enough for the tints to show on the clouds
fantastic thanks
I see two puppy dog faces in the clouds beautiful

New subscriber! Awesome sauce... can't wait to try this....what is a close substitute for Prussian Blue? I've seen it in a few videos but can't seem to find it in any stores. I have so much paint in my studio, surely one must be able to make reasonable facsimile with a colour mixture?
Fantastic
Amazing! Do you spend much time looking at the sky and how many blues do you have?
+Margo Wright outside of painting? I stare at the sky for hours sometimes! I have purchased just about every blue they make, I use most often cobalt blue and cerulean blue
HI!
Love your videos! You are so talented and I aspire to paint like you! I have been trying to find the round blending or scumbling brush you use to soften the clouds and I cant seem to find it!! Can you tell me what brand yours is and what size and such. Thank you!
-BOZ ART
Artist Loft scumbling brush or Princeton round blender brush -- You can buy the artist loft at a lot of arts and craft stores. They come in two sizes only. I use both :) Thank you!!
Such an awesome lesson. Thank you so much for posting. I never imagined I'd be able to paint a storm, but thanks to your video I've gotta say- mine looks fantastic! Much appreciation from my heart to yours.
Amazing! How many lessons from different teachers have you had....or are you self taught? Whichever, I love your work!👏🏼👍🏼💕
Marsh I really appreciate it, yes I am self-taught. 🙂
At 40 minutes in you've got a dog sitting on the hand of a Greek god. Wonderfull
