In this video art lesson I cover how to paint thunderstorm clouds over a lake using fluid acrylics on canvas. I show how I blend the brilliant colors and add a sense of atmosphere to the painting. I used various paint brushes which I cover throughout the video lesson.
Materials used:
- Golden fluid acrylic paint (titanium white, carbon black, cerulean blue, quinacridone red, cadmium red, primary yellow)
- Water for mixing into the paints (thinning) and washing brushes
- 16x20" stretched canvas
About the painting:
I could watch storms on the horizon forever. I love seeing those brilliant colored clouds just before dusk. I'm inspired each time I see a big summer storm and wanted to capture that in this painting.

I wonder if I'm the only one ehre who would have been happy to leave the painting alone halfway through? The impressionist vibe is so beautiful. Every stage of this painting is gorgeous. But I'm always drawn more to want to leave the painting be once the inpressionistic aspect of a full underpainting is done. Saves time cuz you dont have to finish it, AND it's already beautiful. ❤❤❤ I love the finished versions, too, but not as much for some reason.
I am a professor artist. I loved to paint. Unfortunately Multiple Sclerosis has taken my ability to paint from me. I love painting and have tried to give it another shot with no luck. Press forward!

Thank you Chuck I love it! I've struggled with painting sky and clouds but you make it look so easy. Alot of artists paint the whole blue (or blueish) sky and then do the clouds overtop of that. I'm going to practice doing sections of it all like this, looks much easier.

I (loosely ) followed this painting with acrylics and cheap low quality brushes and still came out with something I’m proud of , thank you for sharing your techniques they really worked for me

Chuck you are a very gifted artist and I love to watch your videos. I am 62 years old and I am just learning how to paint. I painted this landscape thanks to this video and it turned out very nice for my first attempt. I am hooked! My painting looks a bit more impressionistic and less real, but it still looks nice. I cannot seem to find the brushes you are using and I think those brushes would help to achieve a more realistic look. Thanks again for sharing your videos and God bless you.

Malade depuis longtemps et ne pouvant sortir de chez-moi, lorsque ça va à peu près, je peins à l'acrylique (ayant visionné beaucoup de vos vidéos, j'ai cru comprendre que vous aimiez terminer à l'huile. En ce moment, je m'essaie sur une de vos toiles : "How to paint a sky and clouds"car j'apprends à faire le ciel et les nuages et je passe beaucoup de temps chaque jour à regarder vos vidéos, les techniques que vous utilisez, les pinceaux, vos mélanges de peinture qui sont peut-être le moment que je préfère.J'adore les couleurs que vous parvenez à obtenir...:-) Vous êtes très souriant, ça fait du bien en ces temps sombres. Il est vital de s'évader et la peinture en est un bon moyen :-)

I want to paint a picture for my church of clouds and the Lord on his white horse coming through them. Love your clouds.
Ruby Lee- nice comment. It seems that our Lord Jesus may be coming soon in the clouds. This cloud picture that Chuck did is beautiful. I pray that everyone is saved and ready to go. Our sins are very serious in God's eyes. Because he is a holy and just God, he will judge us by his moral law, the 10 commandments, and none of us can even begin to be perfect. We have all lied (liar), taken something that doesn't belong to us (thief), looked at someone with lust or prono (adulter), taken God's name in vain like omg (blasphemy), etc. So we are all headed to God's prison, hell, and there is no parole. We need God's mercy. He is rich in mercy and came down to earth in Jesus Christ and died for our sins on the cross, taking our eternal punishment then He rose again to life. He paid our fine so we can walk free out of God's court room. In response we need to confess and turn from our wickedness (repentance) and then trust in Jesus alone. Trusting in Jesus saves us. It is like putting on a parachute. The parachute keeps us from hitting the ground at 120 mph. We cant get to heaven by being a good person and loving everyone. We need to repent and trust in Jesus. I would love to paint clouds like that.
I came across your channel while looking for instructions on how to paint clouds. I was working on an acrylic landscape and totally messed up the sky while trying to paint some trees, my choices were do I scrap the painting or try and get creative and save it. Because this was a painting that I had started a few months ago and then set aside I knew I couldn't match the colour of the sky, so why not make some clouds. You have helped me salvage my painting but most important I found you and your amazing videos! Thank you so much Chuck for creating a easy to follow and understand video.
