Mario 64 isn't a bad game by any means, it just REALLY has a bad control scheme. Mario Odyssey has perfected 3D platforming controls in my honest opinion, Sunshine not being too far behind.
@@notamuffin suppose it shows you the subjective nature of games. To me, apart from the camera, mario 64's controls were tight and he moved around at good speed. Banjo kazooie felt too slow and a tad clunky. But there you go.
Have you tried playing Super Mario 64 with an emulator? The controls seem easier than the clunky analogue. I play it with keyboard but it must be better with an Xbox controller.
Yeah, they didn't explain that the best. In order to get all 100 per level, you need to stay alive in that world until you collect them all. They changed that for the squeal, though. They put the notes in bunches of 5 and as soon as you find them, you never have to find that particular bunch again.
also, side note, mario did the same thing as banjo when you compare notes and coins, it's just that coins aren't that important in comparison to the notes.
I'm with him, SM64 is a better "game" by a lot.. Banjo just feels like a grindy collectathon more than a fun, super tight platformer. But the levels are a lot prettier and more detailed and it's really impressive for an N64, beats mario in that area!
+Gabriel Schwartz I played Super Mario 64 but I think Banjo Kazooie is better because you get more detailed and beautiful levels and the NPC's in Banjo have much more of a comedic and better dialogue
CG Games Yeah, BK does have more detailed levels, varied music and world building, there's no doubt about that. However, I think gameplay and fun factor are most important to consider (and most people do from what I've seen) - and in that respect SM64 is objectively the best, so it is the better GAME.. - though Banjo Kazooie is aesthetically more impressive for sure! if these were movies it'd definitely win.
I'd bet my left nut that most of the comments bashing Banjo Kazooie are from people who never played it or only played the first level because their friend owned it. It really is a remarkable game.
Shame on you WatchMojo for forgetting Banjo-Kazooie's biggest advantage over Mario 64, the music. While Mario 64's music is just as upbeat and Mario-esce as it's always been, Banjo-Kazooie's music is better fitting for each level. From the beach/pirate style theme of Treasure Trove Cove to the Egyptian style theme of Gobi's Valley, and winter/christmas style theme of Freezeezy Peak to the spooky theme of Mad Monster Mansion, and finally the dark and gloomy theme of Gruntilda's Lair which changes it's theme depending on which level puzzle and lobby you're visiting. Banjo-Kazooie always has a unique theme song for each level unlike Mario 64.
Ratchet and Clank, hands down. Jak is a great series, but it's sequels are definitely too brutal in difficulty and unfairness, which can turn many players off. I still question how I was able to beat Jak 2 back when I was only 14, because after replaying the HD collection on PS3, I could not believe how ridiculously impossible the game was most of the time. Which is a shame, because the gameplay was fun, but all the constant car chases, time limited escort missions, races, guard evasions, and skate segments really dragged the game down, which made it annoying and repetitive at times. Jak 2 is still a good game, but it's ridiculous requirements to progress through the game really holds the game back. Jak 3 was a little bit better. It still had hard missions, but it allowed players to feel more free to explore the hub world, without having to be shot down by a bunch of NPC guards. Ratchet and Clank games are great, the only thing that kind of bothers me about those games, are the little mini games that are required to hack through computers and doors. Other than that, I love the mix of Banjo-Kazooie like gameplay mixed with a third person shooting game. It made a great thing out of two different game genres. The series has really fun weapons, and each main entry in the series has something in it's story or gameplay to help it stand out from the others. I also found the characters and stories of the Ratchet and Clank games to be more enjoyable. It's wacky, but has some strong character development as the series progresses. A Crack in Time is still my favorite entry in the series, because of it's more dramatic plot. The Jak games don't have bad stories, but they feel so mixed up, even the game's feel took a sudden switch. The first game was an overall colorful and kid friendly platformer to help launch the PS2. Then Jak 2 decided to be a game for teenagers, where the mute protagonist from the first game is suddenly a gritty action hero with guns and a dark alter ego, and the bright and colorful island setting from the first game is suddenly a giant dictated wasteland of greys and browns. It was just a real strange change in tone. The story of the games weren't too memorable either. While the cutscenes were funny at times, they felt more like filler before beginning your next mission in the game. Ratchet and Clank had a good variety of cutscenes that move the plot forward, tell you what to do in the game, and some were just made for the sake of campy entertainment. When it comes to which games have a better chance at entertaining both kids and adults, I think Ratchet and Clank is the way to go.
Excellent choice. I like both franchises very much. But if you were to twist my arm and to pick just the one, I'd have to go with Jak and Daxter. Ratchet and Clank's weapon arsenal and the different worlds are truly spectacular and they are tough to beat. However, the franchise itself has really been milking it and in terms of story, characters and in some places gameplay, it got dull and boring very quickly. While Jak and Daxter's weapon arsenal was also entertaining, they weren't as imaginative as Ratchet and Clank's. Where Jak and Daxter's real strength lies in its story and characters. They had far more memorable characters and unlike Ratchet and Clank, Naughty Dog knew when to give their franchise a proper ending and send off. Regardless of all these, I think we can all agree the both these franchises are awesome!
And it wasn't even really a fair comparison, considering Mario 64 is an action/mission-based platformer whereas Banjo Kazooie is nonlinear and built almost entirely around collecting things.
He forgot the 5 Jinjos in every level that give you a jiggy if you collected them. Not to mention the awesome Mumbo Tokens and extra honeycombs. In Mario 64, there are only stars, coins and red coins. Rare made more relevant collectables!!!
I play both Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie all the time, I don't feel nostalgia for either but I still like Mario 64 more than Banjo-Kazooie. Don't get me wrong, Banjo-Kazooie is an absolute masterpiece, it's just that Mario 64 has some more options and, in my opinion, has an easier play style.
Exactly. Super Mario 64 was that game everybody played, and bc of nostalgia people tend to say Mario 64 is superior, but actually it's not! It's a great game but it's a simple game, banjo Kazooie is a lot more complex in every other way. While Mario 64 gives you a hint of where to find your star, banjo Kazooie gives you the whole world to explore and find the jiggies by solving the puzzles in that. We could say much more of it, but imo banjo Kazooie is much better
Mario 64 is superior. It's a game with more fluid and fun movement, with intense charm and gameplay. There's a lot more to do. Its camera angles aren't as bad as everyone says, and the course deisgn is better. It is well designed with vthe limits and iss revolutioanary. Banjo Kazooie is a masterpiece as well, but you are wrong if you say the reason M64 is better is because nostalgia, because that is false. It's an excellent game. Banjo Kazooie doesn't quite hit it, but it comes close.
i've played mario 64 way too much as a kid but idk I have never played banjo kazooie, didnt even know the game since I saw a speedrun of the game 2 years ago
Mario 64 is more polished and iconic, but Banjo has more replay value and better graphics. Either way, both are some of the all time best 3D Platformers out there
I'm only 16 but my parents had a n64 before me and I remember playing dk64 still play the same cartridge today it's really good but it was so broken I could get into boss fights by easily glitching through the floor
I honestly think Banjo Kazooie is the BEST game I have ever played, EVER. Maybe it's the impressive challenging levels and detailed worlds, or the required objectives to get 100%, or maybe it's the nostalgic game track music, but whatever it is this game is very satisfying that leaves any gamer at peace once they have beaten it!!!
Albert Vargas Well, thanks to it being about Banjo-Kazooie I played the first 2 in the series. I completed the first one 100% weeks ago and I loved it.
Only reason people diss it is because of nostalgia. When you look at it as a racing game, it honestly was a good game, but compared to the first two, it's considered lesser because Banjo-Threeie and all that it was meant to be kept everyone waiting for another 3D platformer.
Banjo Kazooie is just the overall better, more innovative game. The graphics are nice even to this day; with beautiful, creative landscapes and scenery. The enemies are so creative in their design and their attacks. Snow men throwing snows ball at you, and you have to knock their hats off to defeat them (inspired by Frosty the snowman coming to life with a magic hat). So creative! Then you have such a beautiful soundtrack (Mario does as well), composed by Grant Kirkhope. The levels are alive with colourful NPC's. The puzzles were not hard to solve, but never easy. Mario was a wonderful game, with fun addicting gameplay that made you want to get 120 stars over and over again, but Banjo Kazoo was a platformer masterpiece! There was so much to collect: Jiggy's, Music Notes, Feathers, Eggs, Jinjo's, Mumbo Tokens, all serving an important role in the game. And the legacy of Banjo lives on today in the spiritual successor, Yooka-Laylee. I can't wait for Yooka-Laylee, and it's all thanks to one of the greatest platformers of all time, Banjo Kazooie.
Banjo does not play as tightly, have the wealth of neat mechanics, nor a *huge* dedicated speedrun community and an interesting speedrun. Really, Banjo is all about exploring detailed levels to collect shit. Mario 64 is also about collecting largely, but has much tighter controls and fun factor, which is really what matters to most. So honestly, Mario 64 is the better game, but Banjo *is* a much larger, prettier technical achievement, for sure.
Having gone back and played both games recently, SM64 just feels broken by today's standards, with controls that are at times too sensitive and other times not sensitive enough, while Banjo aged really well in that way. SM64 is still a great game, but just doesn't play as smoothly now as Banjo does, comparatively. Banjo didn't have nearly the same impact on gaming, but I don't feel like that's a fair benchmark of which game aged better.
Like comparing a 50 dolar bill to a 100 dollar bill. Banjo Kazooie is everything Super Mario 64 is and then some. In all fairness, it came out 2 years after and was inspired by it. SM64 was revolutionary.
@@samashton6112 Gonna have to disagree there! Kazooie had backtracking as well and it was less interesting! In Tooie you generally have more things to do during the backtracking and there's so much more ways to travel between and in worlds that the actual action of backtracking is generally shorter than in Kazooie. And the world feels so much more alive that even the downtime don't feel like a chore (at least to me)! It's not like I expect moment to moment action from a collectathon game. It's not Doom or Quake ;) Having big breathers and a cool world to explorer feel more important to me in a game focused on exploration. It's like saying the backtracking in Metroidvanias is bad when it's kind of the essence. Plus in both cases it's skill able if you're not going for 100%, and if you do, it's normal to do some backtracking. BK is a hella fine game, but I actually dislike the fact that you can almost (except for I believe a couple of jiggies in Gobi's Desert/Freezeezy depending on which you do first) get everything on your first playthrough of each level. It's cool to come back later and find new stuff thanks to new moves I think. Now that's just my opinion but I really feel like backtracking for exploration and bigger, more lively worlds benefit games like that. I think at best it could benefit from a way to just teleport straight to levels from the overworld, faster "teleports" and a "teleport to level entry" option!
@@xalgolx5869 Late reply but huge disagreement on that. Most of Tooie extra playtime is actually raw content. While a bit of it is not the best, neither is all the content in Kazooie. And as said in my other comment, the world is much more interesting and cool to walk around in. Any form of long walk in BK would have been incredibly boring. Now I can get enjoying Kazooie more, but it definitely doesn't "blow" away Tooie, they just do things differently (and I feel more interestingly in Tooie but... opinions). I personally do a yearly or bi-yearly playthrough of both but I have more and more of hard time going through Kazooie, and it comes from someone who can't stand the trend of open-world games being everywhere and being done so poorly ;)
DevilBlackDeath fair enough, just a difference preference in gameplay then. I love knowing that when I go into a level, I can do most things there and then. Which is why I love Kazooie, because of despite that one or two instances between the Peak and Gobi’s, you can do most stuff straight away. Back tracking is good and one franchise that does it very well is Ratchet and Clank. There’s backtracking but if you do most things while playing through, it’s not as tedious. Tooie is great and has massive levels, but when you have so much backtracking to do, for me anyway, it becomes slightly more tedious than anything. Plus in conjunction with this, Mumbo sections also take forever and even him moving a rock is slightly irritating in how long the cutscene is. But fair enough, we just have differences in what we prefer which is why I prefer Kazooie more and you like Tooie more, which is all ok :) Don’t get me wrong I love Tooie as well, I just prefer Kazooie and think it’s the better game
"Let's pit these two near perfect games against each other, and purposefully use entirely subjective categories and points, and make sure that it ALMOST ties - until the last point makes one win." They're both amazing. Let's just enjoy good things.
M8 we all know this but just like you said, play & enjoy both of them because they’re both great games & it’s just a subjective opinion that will put one above the other, well some just watch these types of ‘’VS’’ videos for the simple entertainment that they’re meant to be.Don’t take these “vs” vid’s so seriously & just enjoy them for what they are,or just don’t watch them at all eh🤷♂️
I think the Xbox version of Banjo Kazooie fixed the issue with the notes that the N64 version had. I’ve never experienced that problem while playing the game on Xbox One.
OMGz! Moar shit to collect! How clever. Fuck that, I say they should've had ten items stashed behind every blade of grass. That'd keep dumbasses that think it's a sign of quality busy for dayz. DAYZ I tell you.
I recently replayed both Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie. As a kid, it didn't make sense to call Super Mario 64 better because, in my mind, Banjo-Kazooie was the same game, only improved in every way. However, as an adult, the acrobatic mechanics of Super Mario 64 are more accessible to me because I am a better gamer, which opens the door to sooo many possibilities when it comes to navigating the worlds, which is why this game is loved by speed-runners today. If you ask me today, it's the perfect draw between them. I don't think either is better than the other. Both have pros and cons.
I prefer Banjo Kazooie but to be fair, banjo kazooie did have more time to learn from sm64

Not to mention they completely ignored the jinjos
@@noneofyourbusiness4294 Yeah but Super Mario 64 has red coins to match the Jinjos. So the two cancel each other out.
Both are great ! But for me Banjo Kazooie is the better one :)
lol
Justice M who fuckin cares mate. Banjo is the better game overall
@@justicem2853 Yes, because there are less games in the Banjo franchise, it MUST mean that the games are worse... Nice logic.
@@abomiyeti7440 hey that was a while ago i love banjo know so happy he made it to smash
mechanically super mario 64 aged better than banjo and is a much more significant game
but as for fun, that's subjective
I am superior, I am better, I am Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo should’ve won the collectibles category too, you didn’t even mention the Jinjos!
Score should have been 4-1 BK since you keep your notes in the XBLA version.
Banjo is an easy win. Mario 64 is absolutely amazing nonetheless.
I'm with him, SM64 is a better "game" by a lot.. Banjo just feels like a grindy collectathon more than a fun, super tight platformer. But the levels are a lot prettier and more detailed and it's really impressive for an N64, beats mario in that area!
Easy win? What?! Did you not play Mario?
+Gabriel Schwartz I played Super Mario 64 but I think Banjo Kazooie is better because you get more detailed and beautiful levels and the NPC's in Banjo have much more of a comedic and better dialogue
Plus the music in BK was a lot better. They used a lot of repeated music for M64.
CG Games
Yeah, BK does have more detailed levels, varied music and world building, there's no doubt about that. However, I think gameplay and fun factor are most important to consider (and most people do from what I've seen) - and in that respect SM64 is objectively the best, so it is the better GAME.. - though Banjo Kazooie is aesthetically more impressive for sure! if these were movies it'd definitely win.
When Super Mario Galaxy is first shown, in the corner it says Super Mario Sunshine apposed to Galaxy.

@Dong the Kong thing is banjo kazooie is superior in every way
My wife refuses to play anything other than THESE TWO GAMES. Mario 64 is making her pregnancy 1000% easier lol

I do wish Rare would let NOA put both Banjo Kazooie N64 titles onto the eshop.
It's not up to Rare; Microsoft own them, hence the Nuts 'n' Bolts game on the 360. Not to mention the atrocity that was Perfect Dark Zero.
Microsoft owns Rare. The question is whether Nintendo or Rare owns rights to Banjo-Kazooie (Rare does now btw).
Because of that comment, I think Nintendo needs to hire you! ☺

Banjo kazooie's awesome game music.
Yay RARE gets some credit for once!
I love Mario 64 but Banjo Kazooie is better!

Ratchet and Clank Series VS Jak and Daxter Series
Regardless of all these, I think we can all agree the both these franchises are awesome!
uncharted 4 is bettet
+Matt “Spider-Matt” Thornton did you reply to your own comment?!? Lol
Haha I think he was replying to SpongicX.
you're so biased... Banjo Kazooies Collectibles are WAY better than Mario...
GameDude123 ikr that's what i said
And it wasn't even really a fair comparison, considering Mario 64 is an action/mission-based platformer whereas Banjo Kazooie is nonlinear and built almost entirely around collecting things.
He forgot the 5 Jinjos in every level that give you a jiggy if you collected them. Not to mention the awesome Mumbo Tokens and extra honeycombs. In Mario 64, there are only stars, coins and red coins. Rare made more relevant collectables!!!

The only reason some people like Mario more is because of the nostalgia. They're blind to the fact that Banjo-Kazooie did everything better.
Mario 64 has more fluid and less gimmicky movement. Beyond that, it's inferior in pretty much every way.
Wrong
I CONT CHOOSE! THEY ARE BOTH AWESOME
i've played mario 64 way too much as a kid but idk I have never played banjo kazooie, didnt even know the game since I saw a speedrun of the game 2 years ago
Mario 64 is more polished and iconic, but Banjo has more replay value and better graphics. Either way, both are some of the all time best 3D Platformers out there

what about Crash Bandicoot Warped
Mario 64 is a winner in my book anytime you ask me about an N64 game
The true winner is: Conker's Bad Fur Day
I honestly think Banjo Kazooie is the BEST game I have ever played, EVER. Maybe it's the impressive challenging levels and detailed worlds, or the required objectives to get 100%, or maybe it's the nostalgic game track music, but whatever it is this game is very satisfying that leaves any gamer at peace once they have beaten it!!!
Am I the only one who likes Nuts & Bolts? :(
I enjoyed it, but it shouldn't have been with Banjo and Kazooie.
no i like it too ;)
Albert Vargas Well, thanks to it being about Banjo-Kazooie I played the first 2 in the series.
It was a good racing game, just not a good Banjo game
Banjo's my favorite. Loved that game.
BK is my favorite platformer ever, period.
Banjo Kazooie had a great sense of humor which Mario didnt have
Are they going to ignore the jinjos, the honeycomb pieces and mumbo skulls in the collectable round? and that's only talking about the 1st game
Yeah, but those aren't as important as Musical notes or Jiggies
Banjo Kazooi is an extremely underrated N64 game.

Banjo-Kazooie is as perfect as platformers get.
Level design, atmosphere, charm
The music in Banjo Kazooie is amazing as well. :)
Banjo-Kazooie is better because of reasons.
CInema Sins? Is it you? Hahaha
Super Mario 64 is better because of a lot of reasons.
Dude, banjo kazooie was literally my childhood.
I like banjo more but I would say mario 64 was more revolutionary
Almost impossible to pick. Two classic games that were both big parts of my childhood. But gun to my head, I'll go with Banjo Kazooie.

+CodenameJackimo i Don't care about legacy and this kind of thing the game is better...
Banjo-Kazooie definitely aged much better than Mario 64.
If you're seduced by the superficial, sure. Banjo's gameplay remains mundane by comparison.
I agree, B&K is the better title. Bought both games day-one and regardless of the first impression they gave me, B&K has aged well better than SM64.
Like comparing a 50 dolar bill to a 100 dollar bill. Banjo Kazooie is everything Super Mario 64 is and then some. In all fairness, it came out 2 years after and was inspired by it. SM64 was revolutionary.
Banjo Kazooie is clearly 1,000,000 times better

Why, it's Banjo, anyday, he really takes my breath away!
**Banjo-Tooie enters the room** **Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie hide their head in the ground in shame**
No way, Banjo Kazooie blows Tooie away.
Yeah Tooie is really good but it has flaws. It’s main issue being the backtracking and time between events. Everything takes forever

I loved Mario 64, but I think DK 64, Banjo Kazooie and
Banjo Tooie are all better
