According to his caddie Dave Musgrove, Lyle had mud on his ball for his 2nd shot at 11 - hence it hung out further to the right than he intended. And because it landed on the fringe he still couldn't clean it, causing his first putt to come up six feet short.

Sandy had a nightmare 11 and 12 and I'd thought he'd blown it so I went to bed (didn't want to see it,) Boy did I get that wrong. Big Sandys finest hour and a personal all time sports favourite

And 7 years later I had the opportunity to work at the Masters as a gallery guard on the 10th, and then return and play the course. Naturally I tried the shot from that bunker - and that lip was really high!!!! Sandy Lyle - proving that, just sometimes, nice guys do finish first.
Darrly Brannen absolutely, even more than tv shows. Everybody that goes to Augusta for the 1st time is always amazing how “hilly” it is. Tv flattens it out, especially the greens.

Paul, so true. Theres a classic from Peter Aliss at the 1990 masters 3rd round. Stadler just clears the pond on 2nd shot at 15. He smiles and Aliss utters the classic...." Wonderfully expressive face. I wouldnt like a clip round the ear from him I must confess" Awesome.
I remember watching this live in '88. The final hole is imprinted in my mind - Sandy hit his tee shot and looked concerned as I guess he'd really caught it and into the bunker it went. The bunker shot was just a perfectly clean hit and then watching the ball gather momentum and roll back down to the flag. Then the wiggly putt which went in. Amazing. It was a remarkable 4 years for British golf (or if you prefer Scottish 88, English Faldo 89/90 Faldo and Welsh Woosie 91).
I mean when we think of legendary shots at Augusta we think of Mize's chip in at 11, Tigers chip in on 16 - but that shot on 18 from the back fairway bunker from Lyle is one of the most incredible shots ever seen at Augusta and surely the most underrated one. I can't believe he even gets it above the lip with a 7 iron but to then lazer it over the flag and bring it back to what, 8 feet? Freaking incredible.
I don't think you understand the term "sneaky long". "Sneaky long" means hitting it with a low draw and loads of overspin, giving it fifty yards of run after landing. So the ball ends up a long way out there, without the player having actually carried it a long way through the air. Hence the term "sneaky long". Applies to smaller-looking guys who don't appear all that powerful. Sandy Lyle was just a long powerful hitter through the air - he wasn't a "sneaky long" hitter.

Everyone is talking about the sand shot Sandy did on 18th.. I was stunned by the shot on 13th, a real pressure shot and by far longest and that after 3 over last two holes!
Wow, I had missed this in '88 and never knew how close Calc came to a green jacket. Lot's of great golf down the stretch from both him and Sandy. I always loved Calc's move into his left side. So simple.
The last Masters hosted by Brent Musburger Also the only time between 1983-1990 that the winner came from the final pairing. After 1990 we had 16 consecutive winners that came from the final pairing.

I've been watching a lot of the final rounds so far no one who lost the lead by putting in water has managed to recover and win except Lyle, amazing mind set to comeback from that.
Venturi, McCord, Wright and Lundquist, it doesn’t get much better than that for commentary. It takes me back to simpler times, when Augusta didn’t have to fend off the long hitters. The Lyle bunker shot on 18 was one of the best closing hole shots in Masters history.
I remember during the honorary starters ceremony Curtis Strange said enjoy these legends because they are not going to be with us much longer meaning, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Tom Watson and to think 35 years later out of all the commentators from this Masters only Verne Lundquist and Jim Nantz remain and this was the last year that Brent Musberger hosted the coverage and Jim Nantz took over in 89. We need to also enjoy legends of broadcasting like Verne Lundquist and Brent Musberger, because they will not be with us much longer even though Brent is retired. So consider in another 10 years there will be another group of honorary starters probably Nick Faldo and Ben Crenshaw and to think during this time Jim Nantz will be the only commentator from this Masters left as he said before he wants to cover this event for as long as possible

Squeak caddying for Couples before going to Price in the 90's... before his early passing from Lukemia. By chance, due to Price being ill, he caddied for Daly in his '91 PGA win.
If I recall, the reason Mark Calcaveccia was able to land the ball so softly was that his Irons had deep square grooves which helped him win the Open late in 1988. Soon after, they were banned from all competitions.
Being from west palm beach, fl, i was rooting for Calc, but you have to hand it to Lyle, hitting that great 7 iron, shot out of the bunker on 18. He deserved to win

I agree with one of the other comments, Sandy had so much natural talent, in my opinion more than Faldo, and should have won more majors, but tried to get way too technical. He was possibly influenced by Nick Faldo’s success.

Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, Ian Woosnam, Sandy Lyle, Greg Norman, Bernhard Langer, Nick Price, Ian Baker-Finch, Jose Maria Olazabal all in their primes. Lyle had such a natural swing, but then in 1992 he tweaked it and was never the same again. Brent Musburger's last Masters as well. While I think in his prime he was one of the best in the business, he never came off as a golf guy. I can see why by this point Jim Nantz was doing a majority of the hosting role, and in 1989 would be given the role officially, which he still has today.

But he was also the victim of the role of the dice several times, which doesn't play fair - in life or in golf. How Norman would've loved some of his opponents to miss tiny putts at the death, or hit into water hazards in play-offs. That's how Faldo got gifted three of his majors!

Months later at the PGA, Bob Tway holed out from a bunker at 18 to beat Norman who shot 76. Losses like this weren't completely on him though the shark is the only player in the last 80 years to lose all 4 majors in a playoff over the course of his career.
Hard to believe CBS’s coverage was even more insufferably precious back then. The jackets and ties, the reverential comments about the course, the bowing to the golf gods of Sarazen, Sneed, and Jones...enough to make me gag.
The narrow green and the creek angle away from the tee to the right. Anything slightly right and/or short is in the water. Short or long and left, at least you are on dry land. Wind is swirling and unpredictable in that part of the course, making distance control a pill too. I agree with the announcers. It depends on the circumstance, and how you're hitting them at the time. 3-4 back and swinging well, I'm going for it. Any closer to the lead, it's not worth the double bogey+ risk.
No, his yips hadn't started by this point. They began six weeks later, at the end of May (during the PGA at Wentworth). In the remaining majors of '88 he went MC - LAST - MC.
He cut his hand as a teenager and had nerve damage. Remained an amatuer as he was from money and had a successful insurance business. Decided at 50 he was competitive for the Senior Tour and decided he could make some money playing it.

Norman had some tremendous final rounds at majors when he wasn't on the leaderboard so the pressure was off.
And some tremendous rounds on Sunday when the pressure was ON - for example the '93 Open.

@@threerings1345 He certainly deserved more than two. He lost some majors through silly mistakes, and others undeniably through nerves. But he was also the victim of the role of the dice several times, which doesn't play fair - in life or in golf.
How Norman would've loved some of his opponents to miss tiny putts at the death, or hit into water hazards in play-offs. That's how Faldo got gifted three of his majors!
@@MrAJR76In '86 when he led all 4 majors going into Sunday, Norman missed a 15 ft putt by a half-inch at 18 to win at Augusta. Months later at the PGA, Bob Tway holed out from a bunker at 18 to beat Norman who shot 76. Losses like this weren't completely on him though the shark is the only player in the last 80 years to lose all 4 majors in a playoff over the course of his career.

The narrow green and the creek angle away from the tee to the right. Anything slightly right and/or short is in the water. Short or long and left, at least you are on dry land. Wind is swirling and unpredictable in that part of the course, making distance control a pill too.
I agree with the announcers. It depends on the circumstance, and how you're hitting them at the time. 3-4 back and swinging well, I'm going for it. Any closer to the lead, it's not worth the double bogey+ risk.

He cut his hand as a teenager and had nerve damage. Remained an amatuer as he was from money and had a successful insurance business. Decided at 50 he was competitive for the Senior Tour and decided he could make some money playing it.
