    That's a neat project. I recall making one similar when I was in Scouts many, many years ago. If I remember correctly we used them to drill through the framing for a canoe to run the lacing for attaching the outside covering. Thanks for the video and for jogging the memory.

    Great to see a video where some one makes something , to many bushcrafter's just coping each other and making tarp shelters or duck tape tarp - plastic tents like the forts we made as kids out of junk and sometimes dad's good stuff that was meant for other things. Haven't seen any one make one since the guy from primitive technology did one years ago.

    I just watched the version of Primitive Technology channel's on this today. Was wondering about it from more of a modern bushcraft version and you answered. Mind reader.

    I like your wedding-ring tattoo. A very practical replacement for a ring, which could get caught in some of the machinery you operate...and a very permanent declaration! Some might not think it's romantic (because "--tattoo! le gasp!") but I think it's wonderful.

    Pump drills are very cool. We us them with National Park Service school walks. The 4th graders get to use pump drills to make a hole in an abalone shell to wear as a necklace. The kids love using them (after the slight learning curve). The local Native American's (Chumash) used them once they were (sadly) brought into the missions. They were definitely not used by Native Americans here prior to the arrival of the Europeans, who brought over the pump drills. Your take on the build is very nice, I will have to try that out. We have much thinner and wider flywheels on ours, more like a "personal pizza" in size and shape.

    Could this be used as a fire drill too? Looks superior to a bow drill but i am not sure if it produces enough pressure against the fire board.

    You didn't really show how you achieved the rotation and the focus was on your arm when implementing the use.

  • @internetcatfish
    @internetcatfish Před rokem +1

    I must have missed something, but I can't figure out what makes it spin.

    • @farmerboy916
      @farmerboy916 Před rokem

      So the pumping action pulls on and thereby unwinds the cord wrapped around and held over the back end of the rod. It’s converting linear to rotary motion

    • @teatowel11
      @teatowel11 Před rokem

      You wind the string that is attached to the crossbar around the shaft.
      As it winds it becomes shorter and raises the crossbar up the shaft.
      When you push the crossbar down, it pulls the string and spins the shaft as it unwinds.
      At the bottom of the stroke the momentum will keep it spinning and wind in the oposite direction.
      He then releases pressure ast the string winds again.
      The wide cylender piece acts as a fly wheele.

    • @DavidCanterbury
      @DavidCanterbury  Před rokem +1

      The purpose is teaching simple machines I have video on this same device making fire. I don’t cook on wood much because it’s not renewable quickly and I use fires EVERY DAY wouldn’t be long and I would have no material for the future or for students at my school
