- 1973 Camaro Z28 OEM WHEEL RESTORATION! The NEVER ENDING Wheel Project COMPLETED!!
It's been quite a long journey to bring these wheels back to near OEM specs! In this episode I bring you along for the ride of what I had to do! Thanks for watching and and have a GREAT Labor Day!! - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Sorry about the upload cutting out, not sure what happened but it's fixed (hopefully)!!
Working now. I had a trouble trying to leave a comment at first.
@@ramblingsofnothing7783 Awesome thanks for letting me know it's good!
I am old school and grew up with White letters out. I also think it is more period correct. And to me, nothing looks goofier than having white letters on the inside.
My '68 Firebird has the white facing out, I like the white letters out on old muscle cars! Great job on the rims!
HOBrian2003 Nice and thanks man!
I did mine with white letters out. On a el camino.
Definitely the white letters out, period correct! This car is turning out amazing!
I think the raised white letters out is a classic timeless look! Wheels look great, nice job!
Thank you!
letters out dude! cool project
Nice job.....I personally love the white letters on outside look for tires
Old school....my personal opinion
I love those wheels. Glad you kept them original.
Hey man, I love your channel I just found it and it’s very quickly become my favorite channel to watch. Keep up the amazing work!! I can’t wait to see what you do in the future!!
Project Ranchero Thank you I appreciate that 👍🙂!
I had to chuckle when the wheel guy said "I've never seen these wheels before" Especially when GM used them from 1970-1981 in one form or another. I like those wheels for an original car.
Yes, trippy the guy never saw them before! ....People put them on chevelles too, best looking wheel on a second gen IMO.
Old school here! I had a camaro back in 78' and white letters out.
John Wagner Nice!!
I just found your channel and after seeing your obsessive attention to detail, subscribed immediately! I’m so in love with the design of your Z28 and the impressive paint job, that you brought back to life so nicely! Keep up the great work, you really have an incredible talent! 👍🇨🇦
Nice high quality work with great attention to detail!
White letters out and nice job Love the color
Looks awesome
i really appreciate folks like you that have the passion, and are willing to put in hard work and effort...your sub count is increasing..keep up the good editing and..anxious to see the process of this rare classic...
Thank you, that means a lot to me =)!
Wheels look awesome - go retro - white letters out! Can't wait to see them on the car.
Eco Ron Thanks Ron!!
Nice job really enjoying the videos. I am working on a 73 Camaro also but I am making it more of a pro touring race car on my channel. Thanks for the good info
Love the pro-touring look on these cars. If my engine didn’t match I would do the same 👍👍
Letters out. No question.
White letters looks like it came from that era.
Great video man! Keep it up
Thanks Bob!
Great!!!
When I had my 78 Z28 I had the white letters out. But also seen a few with just the black wall out. It's pretty much what you think will look the best for you. I think the rims also came with the chrome trim inserts if I'm not mistaken.
Really nice work. The Z is going to be killer when you are done.
Thank you!
Wow those turned out great!! Personally I like the sleeker blacked out look.
Scott Davis Thanks buddy 👍👌!
Also quick note most gun metal grey will match up to the OE paint if you weren’t able to find the OE paint.
Ramblings Of Nothing Good to know, thanks!!
or Anthracite looks good .. even now, and I painted mine in 1978.
That is a great looking wheel, I’m looking for a set for my 71 Chevelle
Thankss!
I would leave the white lettering out that looks good on that car
For the old school look imsay white letters out, just sets off the car nicely
O____OU Oooohhh My wheels!!! :D (Camaro 1970)
Another great video. Definitely letters OUT!
william dalbey Thanks William! Noted 👌👌
@@RyanSampsonRPh Ryan, did you see the note on your previous post about the rims. I sent the date code on the rim I have. You are welcome to it if you want a spare
william dalbey I did not see it! CZcams only seems to notify me for half of the comments. If I feel any vibration on any of these I will keep you in mind. Thank you William!
Hey Ryan , love your approach, seek out the old school expert, do the proper prep work, find the paint that garners the correct result. Great job! Having done a number of restorations, your attention to detail will take you to the finish line. I did a similar wheel resto on my 70 442 and found a rattle can product that was also the perfect color match and sheen. Having lived back in the day, letters go out without a doubt.
Skinner Hound Thank you! I was hesitant at first to use a rattle can product but I am happy with how the sheen/color came out in terms of originality. Glad to know you went a similar route too; tells me that I made the right choice if you did the same 👌👍!
Back in the day I had a 71 R/S split bumper it had the same wheels you have but were flat black with stainless beauty rings & R/S center caps . Whites out for that 70’S look
Nice work on the wheels. White letters out on the tires
David Mays Thank you David!
Hey Ryan, you got a fantastic Channel. I love that 73 Z. I got to say though for a car that's been sitting for 20 years. It's in pretty good condition. I just found you so I'll be watching. Oh and no question about it RWL' s out. The car just won't look right with black walls that thick.
Thank you David! I agree, it was filthy but in great shape after sitting that long, still shocks me how well it buffed out. Underside of the car is rusty but nothing that can't be fixed, thanks for watching!
hello ryan looking good love your videos brother keep them comeing
Thanks buddy!
It's a Camaro! Raised white letters! I know! I bought a 71 with new tires. T/A on the inside. I turned them around and that could have been the greatest improvement I did on the car. Best $50 I ever spent.
Terry Cullender Heck yeah!!
White letters out 👍
Great channel Ryan you’ve got a new sub
Thanks Jeff!
I like white letters out but it your car. Do what you like best.
Letters out
How did I miss the wheel blasting? That would have been great to see. I prefer Mustangs and own one now, but the Gen 2 Camaro is my favorite of that model. Fun build series. Will we get to see the GF? :)
I didn't film that part due to it being so messy ( I need a GoPro instead of my iPhone lol). Future videos I will film it when I need to blast stuff again =).
Black look more solid!!
Pittsburgh?? You local? Just found this channel tonight and have been binging these camaro videos
Hey man! I am only 45 minutes from Pitt (right inside the ohio border). Thanks for the comment and watching 👌!
Hi Ryan, I own a 72 Z/28 and have restored some wheels in my day. It looks like the color you used is close to the 74 Z/28 color. The 70-73 color, PPG calls/called Dark Grey, I have the paint number if you want it. The formula has an additive called suede in it. It makes it rough and collects sponge pieces when you wash them... The last set I restored I use PPG DP40 epoxy primer then the PPG color. After realizing the sponge problem I removed the wheels (then mounted) and sprayed them with dull clear. It didn't change the look but it made it much easier to wash the wheels. Interestingly enough the same wheel on the 71, 72 Chevelle looks like they deleted the suede rom the formula. Hope this helps, Tony!
White letters out, definitely!
my vote is for the black side of the tires
White out, hands down.
Nothing says 70's muscle more than mag wheels and white letters.
If you had a larger set of custom wheels resto-mod look with short sidewalls, then you go black wall.
White Letters Out, It Will Draw Your Eyes To The Wheels More
white letters out, completes the look 100%
I think the white letters coming out will look nice
Should be a dark gray color with blue center caps that have the bow tie on them.
Show white letters looks sick
I own a 1970 with the Z28 Rims. My car is not a Z 28 so I wasn"t worried about keeping all orginal. The color you are looking for is gun metal gray
My memory (first car was a 75 Z) is that we always had the raised white lettering out.
The tires that came on your car most likely would have raised white letters so I think that would be more time period correct. I realize that black walls what one would use today but it was different back in 1973. We were still using bias ply tires. A popular tire for your car and the Chevelle SS was the Goodyear Polyglass with with raised white letters. Radial tires were available by 74 or 75 initially as an option then became standard equipment on most cars later on.
Put what you like out, it's your car, not ours. Either way will look great.
Your going to need drag radials for the back with that motor setup
I was just thinking about this today too 😂. Aghh oh well my past self didn’t know I would be building a 383 haha
I remember my 74 z they were like a dark gunmetal gray , with a bow tie center
Rims look great but back in the day when that car was a highlight on the road white letters face Stout
White wall all the way
Nice video hope you went with white letters out
Letters out...PLEASE!!!
letters out i think it look better
*I normally run the white letters in but, did the classic white letters out when I updated my wheels and tires but, I kind of want to have the tires flipped.* @camaronado
Beautiful wheels! The Cragar S/S (that we all know) Always looked like a knock-off of the original Z-28 to me. That color match could have been the original dealer? I've seen hundreds that way (And it wouldn't be on the build sheet)
Terry Cullender That’s what someone else said about the dealer painting them! I couldn’t find info anywhere online lol so I played it safe and went as close to stock as I could but that would be cool if this was in fact a dealer add-on like ya said 👍!
@ryan sampson how many hours did it take for you to restore these wheels approximately?
On a hot rod you need white lettering out.
Laces out! (letters, I mean.....)
letters out that's how they did it back them, now everyone puts black rims with blackwell, never did like that to much black
18:43 search for how the tires came original
(If you dont find a photo from the original ones, you can paint the letters white)
Ryan, I definitely remember when the 73 Z28 came out and the had white letters out and showing. If I’m not mistaken they had GoodYear Polyglas white letter Tire’s on them. Did you get your headers straightened out?
Hi Don, thanks I will most likely keep the white letters out. The headers are in the process of getting sandblasted (finally); everyone in my area apparently needed their projects media blasted when I needed the headers done haha. Once I get them back I will make a video of applying Cerakote on them!
look like some one hit a curve with them
You are right Leroy, I bet they did!
first i had a friend that got a 73 z28 for high school graduation, yes we graduated in 73. i remember his wheels being much darker charcoal grey/black. second they came with firestone wide oval white letter tires so id have to go white letter side out. only way it will look right.
Great to know, I will leave this color for now but maybe I will change it down the road! Hard to find any info on wheel colors without having seen it first hand like you mentioned =)
White letters out on a Camaro!
Definitely white letters out
Black side out
White letter out!
Did you have any problems getting Center caps on
Looks great, nice job !!
Letters out, I bought the same tyres last year.
Please see my 73 Z28 RS on my channel.
Definitely white out on a 73
Raised whites!
Where did u order the center caps from?
I’ve had tons of camaros from 75-91.. they did come with factory paint matched to the car from the dealers. There was the option to have them painted. Those were most likely original Paint matched to the car. I had a blue with the rims painted exactly like the car and I had a Firebird with those rims or very close to those that were the same color as the car that were OE. As for the white letters in or out .. if you wanted to go with a 70’s to mid 80’s look I’d put the white letters out. 👍👍👍
Ramblings Of Nothing maybe that was an option then and they were actually supposed to be body matched?! It’s so hard to find this info online; I know the later years (at least 74 and up) had a color matched wheel option but I wasn’t sure on this one (all the pictures online didn’t have any color matched wheels)! Thanks for sharing man 👍👍!
Firebird had a different rim although they did look similar
Those rims look nice, they are not easy to come by , some might even use the rims that were on the 1973 Chevrolet Nova Super Sport, the rims you have, were used also on theChevelles, Super Sport,1970 1971, you have some unique rims on the Camaro👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
White letters out
Where's the video of the finished restoration of 73 camaro?
Still working on it 🙂
I have original still in the box beauty rims for a 1970 Z 28 do you want to buy them
Boosted Billy 😢 The rings and everything are on the way or I would have! I will keep that in mind though!
Boosted Billy how much for the rings?
Letters out, period correct if that matters.
White out
white letters out !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I see both sides of the tire issue, ha ha, hard to decide, final decision white letters showing, or black side is nice too.
Ronald W It is a tough one lol, I keep going back and forth haha!
I grew up with white letters, they were fun times, unfortunately it eventually became 70's tack .. if you want class go for Black, but you do what you want, you pay your money and you get your choice.
definitely white letters out. Rims look great.
Thank you!
White letters out, it will look more period correct.
White letters!
Dump those tires ,get the proper period correct Good Year white lettered tires. ,don't lower it, rebuild the original engine.....OR sell it to some one who will make it like new....It's a beautiful car ,don't spoil it. No I'm not a Chevy fanatic
White letters, old fashion, black out .
I have a 1973 Camaro Z-28/RS/LT specially ordered in Calif. Because of type LT stripes were deleted. I had to order the spoilers separately. I also ordered the M-20 trans (Wide ratio). My original wheels came with firestone wide oval tires ( I have the original spare with tire on it) The wheels were painted gray with a rough texture ( the surface was not smooth). I recently put on cooper tires (white letters facing in). I prefer the white lettering on bf goodrich TA radials.
Darrell Wong super rare combo you had! I heard of the rough texture on these wheels but did not replicate it due to not knowing how rough it was actually supposed to be. I did see original wheels being a little more gray than how mine turned out though👍
I’m trying to catch up on all your old videos Ryan and I’m so glad your sticking with the factory wheels, they look better than anything on those cars!!!
You can always go to your local automotive paint store Ryan and have them mix you a quart of single stage urethane and have them tone the gloss down to whatever you want. They can take it all the way to flat and everywhere between and then you’ve got a tough as nails finish instead of rattle can. I’ve used a ton of “delFleet” urethane and it is used on a lot of semis and airplanes cause it’s so tough and it’s easier to spray than base coat and you can clear it if you want. I’ve sprayed several food trucks with it and they turned out fabulous!!
I know the info is too late for the Z’s wheels but you’ll know for ext time brother!! Your doing awesome buddy and I’m proud of ya! Keep it up!! I wish I was still in Ohio and I’d teach ya some painting tips that are hard to get anyone to give up anymore but I’ll help ya here anyway I can if you need.
Poops, I forgot buddy!! Raised White letters always go facing out on these cars!! It’s the right period look that your going for and just trust us on it, you will agree with us once their on!! If you go black wall out, then it will always look like the car is naked, it’s almost as bad as a Z not having its stripes or a T/A not having the bird on the hood, etc. these cars were intended to have white letters out and since it seems your trying to go period correct then that’s what you need!!
Take care and be safe Ryan!!
