I grew up in the late ‘60’s-early ‘70’s and have been a fan of HST’s ever since. Johnny nailed Hunter and to this day still carries a little Hunter with him. Fear and Loathing is Hunter’s Great Gatsby. An homage to a lost period of America. I miss Hunter and those far away times.
Bill Murry informed Johnny that once he entered the character of Hunter, he would carry some of him around from there on out. Or maybe it was, once the character of Hunter enters you?
H. S. Thompson is probably one of my favorite Authors to learn about and get to study also probably just one of my favorite authors for his style and ability to storytell while also keeping you entertained and often shocking you every once in a while! an absolute legend
I didn’t know Depp went to these lengths to portray HST. What a fun and great movie that’s makes one reflect on his own days of chaos and exploration. I need to watch it again soon.
Gilliam, Depp & HST the holy trinity of great talent, not to mention Ralph Steadman’s excellent illustrations. One of my favourite books & films EVER! Thanks for this making of insights documentary. Fascinating to see it ❤ 💥 🙏 🔥
HST defined the phrase living legend, weaving a tapestry of 50% bullshit, 50% fact and 100% certifiably mad genius. He was one of the most intriguing individuals of our time-even those who shunned him did so like moths to a flame. Wow. What a ride.
Wow, outstanding Bio. Way, way better than I expected and honestly one of the best I've ever seen. I know this guy producing this has done his homework and extensive research. I very much appreciate the time and hard work that was put into this production. I'm forwarding this to everyone I know that loved this movie.
This was absolutely fantastic. I can't have asked for a better mini-doco about this. Thompson's/Depp's relationship has always been something I have found very interesting, and this is the perfect summary of it. Well done!!!!!
The only other person who is as skilled at embodiment of someone using vocal stylings is Heath Ledger. When i first heard his joker voice i thought, my god, its Tom Waits. Then years later i read an interview with Heath who confirmed he drew inspiration from Tom Waits.
The movie was a huge hit with younger Gen Xers, and is still beloved as a cult classic among us. I myself saw it in the movie theater when it came out my senior year in college, and I remember absolutely loving every minute of it. I think it's Johnny Depp's greatest acting role.
As incredible as Thompson was his style of journalism, which coming from a singular person is refreshing and can yield some incredible insights, seems to have infected the practice at the corporate level. Everyone who calls themselves a journalist now makes no attempt at objectively reporting events. Everyone injects themselves into the story in an attempt to noth satiate their ego and to influence the way those events are thought about. It's to the point to where you jave to question everything about the way any event is reported in an attempt to get to the truth. This sort of thing is fine for a character like Thompson, but not for a news network who reports daily on the events of the world.
I have a deep admiration for this particular film, which I had the pleasure of watching numerous times during my teenage years in the early 2000s. It was a time of exploration and experimentation for me, as I dabbled with various substances. The film, however, provided more than just entertainment; it offered a truly captivating and immersive experience. As I entered my mid-20s, my curiosity led me to delve further into the world of this film. I sought out the book, the audiobook, and even recordings related to it. I wanted to fully immerse myself in the story and gain a deeper understanding of its themes and characters. It was during my late 20s that I found myself in Las Vegas for a convention I had no intention of attending. I was accompanied by my own version of Dr. Gonzo, embracing a wild and reckless spirit. In a state of complete intoxication, I chose not to partake in the typical activities of the city's casinos. Instead, I indulged in the company of women and the allure of drugs, fully embracing the hedonistic lifestyle that the film seemed to embody.
I think it's important to say that, at least how i read it, Depp is playing Raul Duke and not Hunter S. Thompson, who eventually started playing Raul Duke himself until he became the literal caricature of himself he created.
I knew of the book from the 70s. I later read the book. Then I saw the movie. Mr Depp did a wonderful portrayal in the movie. Mind boggling! I believe there is a little of Mr Thompson in Captain Jack Sparrow. 😂. Thank you for this presentation, very informative. The Atomik sends. Peace ✌. 😊
Johnny Depp, the many soul colors that are millions. As the lights and colors shine through the beautiful prisom of mulit colors and different aspects of his being Johnny Depps. No one can be defined as this or only that,' as i have and am learning from his very presence🌟🌟🌟.
Superlative 🤟. I first bought all his books in London for a Bra. What a Lunatic, I thought 😂 Thanks for better illumination of walking (or sniffing?) the thin line between genius and madness 😂. ☝️♥️✌️🌍🙏
Ive read the book 25 years ago on 5 grams dried hawaiian and Purple Haze that was fun but its not so easy to read when all the letters are moving .😂😂 Later ive seen the Film they came close to the novel but a lot of things are missing. You did a great job with this Video. So turn on tune in drop out ❤❤❤
GENIUS AND GOLDEN PIECE MY B!!!! Got my sub and like!!🤘🎸🤘🎸🤘🍻🍻 Wish there was a piece like this on Trainspotting!! 1 & 2 are amazing films! Never have gotten to read the novel though!
Let's be real, Terry Gilliam borrowed a lot from the aesthetic style pioneered by Oliver Stone and cinematographer Robert Richardson for The Doors, Natural Born Killers, and U-Turn.
It would be interesting to see how many other character actors got involved with who they are portraying, and what that involvement looked like. I am only referring to living characters, such as this scenario, and how that relationship was between the two during the process, as opposed to the joker or such characters. Another interesting thing is how the man was admired, and how many people in recent times have had such an epic memorial send off, as well as an impact on another person/persons, that they are willing to pony up millions of dollars, for an insane vision that you had conjured up for your final farewell. It would be hard to imagine that very many people at all, have had such an influence on another human being nonfamily member. (meaning not feeling obligated by other family members to do so. etc.) They wanted this for him.
I hope one day you uncover the development of X-MEN movie. There's a lot of unused script and my favorite is Andrew Kevin Walker version, the X-Men are Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Ice man, Angel and Wolverin. They fight Brotherhood of Mutant (Magneto, Toad, Sabertooth, Blob, Juggernaut) in the island of Manhatan. It's like power ranger story in the Point of View of Sixth Ranger.
the Ray Ban Shooters are a critical part too, to the point Hunter let him have a pair of his own. He wore the yellow lenses in them and in 62 mm as well, and you can't get those yellow lensed Ray Bans anymore. You can get them in green lenses now, which is the type I have.
Saw this in the theater when it was released. I liked the movie but didn't think Johnny Depp wasn't right for the part. Hunter S. Thompson was 6'3" and a physically imposing character. That's why he could get away with all the things he did. He intimidated people. Johnny Depp is 5'10" and comes off like an goofy frat boy. Physically, it just didn't work. But I did like his acting.
Hunter wrote in fear & loathing. The testimony of the moral & spiritual bankruptcy of the fall of Rome. Terry & Johnny brought it to life on the screen. That is & will remain one of the best screen adaptations of a book. Over half a century after the book. The ever downward spiral Hunter trick surfed. Until he couldn't take it any more. And blew his brains out. If you look @ America now. Perhaps his choice was the correct one. Such promise. Such utter failure of what America could have been.
Depp wasn't stealing Thompson's soul; he was being entrusted with it.
If by soul, you mean cocaine..
Just like Bill Murray before him.
They have sorta similar personalities
Yes.

I could not imagine any other actor to do it, even Bill Murray didn't do it so well.

My favorite movie and a pitch perfect performance by Depp. I’ve seen the movie at least 100 times
Honestly I don’t think Bill Murray ever lost that part of himself in a lot of ways looking back

of course.

A most excellent documentary. I am certain that HST and JD would agree.
Hell yea I’ve been wanting more videos about the backstory of this movie. This one was really good and covered a lot of stuff I haven’t heard

Great work! Thank you
Bill Murray did it long before Johnny Depp did in a film called "Where the Buffalo Roam," you should check it out.
Loved the book and the movie, movie is great on some acid or shrooms.
Hello there you should make a video about the history about unproduced Nickelodeon movies

The best Hunter S Thompson movie was definitely Where The Buffalo Roam with Bill Murray as Hunter. This was just a cartoon version of a great book.
Saw this in the theater when it was released. I liked the movie but didn't think Johnny Depp wasn't right for the part. Hunter S. Thompson was 6'3" and a physically imposing character. Norm MacDonald would have also done the role well I imagine.
Depp was great but in an alternate universe I can see Joaquin Phoenix in this role and killing it.
WAY too much sped up footage of Hunter.
The movie as a whole is mediocre. But, the opening 15-20 minutes is the hardest I’ve ever laughed at a movie. The rest has some high points also
